Mike D’Antoni’s Job is Safe With the Lakers

According to Los Angeles Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak, head coach Mike D’Antoni will be back on the sidelines in Hollywood next season after helping guide the team to a 7th Playoff seed (going 28-12 since the infamous late January team meeting.) Per the LA Times: “Yeah, he’s back. I think he’s done a great job,’ Kupchak said. ‘There’s been no discussions otherwise. He’s made adjustments. He’s been flexible. He’s evaluated how he coaches as the season’s progressed. He’s listened to the players. He’s very easy to work with and we think in particular since the meeting the day of the Memphis game, yeah.’ D’Antoni is 40-32 since taking over as the Lakers’ coach, though the Lakers are 28-12 since the day after a team meeting called by D’Antoni in Memphis in January. D’Antoni, 61, has two more guaranteed years for a total of $8 million. The Lakers also owe former coach Mike Brown about $6 million over the next two years. Brown was fired five games into this season. [...] ‘Much has been made of the injuries, and the coaching change [in November] and no training camp, which is certainly a part of it,’ Kupchak said of their up-and-down season. ‘It takes a while. You’re in New York coaching and you see the Lakers once or twice a year, you don’t know the personnel. And the injury situation when he got here, Steve Nash had the broken leg. There’s just too much going on to really look at it any other way.’”

Phil Jackson says he wants to return to coaching and the next day the Lakers say D’Antoni’s job is safe? (Nas voice) “Bye, bye baby.”

im calling BS. if they dont fire him, the only reason has to be that they dont want to give him 8 mill to go on vacation

We all know what that means.

The guy who just realized that having Gasol and Howard on the floor at the same time may be a good idea?

He barely got a feel for how to coach this team in the last 10 games this season. However, I think the way the Lakers finished the season off speaks more of the player’s determination and NOT D’Antoni’s coaching.

Injury would have happened sooner or later but definitely in one of the next games.
    Not D’Antonis fault.

I heard Phil Jackson was looking for a job next season…

thats what they told mike brown before he was fired

surprising how no one is talking about that coaching staff. Fired Mike Brown and left all of his personnel for D’Antoni to deal with. In a day Bernie was relegated to assistant-assistant coach after actually getting the team to win a couple games as the interim HC. Mike Brown’s entourage (the assist coaches who stayed on) been lookin SALTY ever since (ESPECIALLY Eddie Jordan – couldn’t even feign interest for getting paid to do nothing). I haven’t seen a more disengaged coaching staff in 20+ years of watching NBA ball. It’s like they were trying to will the team to failure with their indifference. pure drama this team.

This news is almost as bad as kobe season ending injury….actually i may reconsider it to be even worse and Kob is my favourite player…

Of course Jim Buss isn’t going to fire D’Antoni. He has his own plans for the team. They involve making more money and proving that the Lakers don’t need Phil, not taking the clear path to winning another championship. This should surprise no one.

Won’t be so safe when the Lakers get swept in the 1st round.

Jimmy doesn’t want Phil or a Phil protege. No Phil, no Shaw. Who is a better coach who is available?

    unles jeanie muscles him out

The WCF? Right. Because they would somehow learn to defend the 1, 2 and 4, play the P+R, move the ball onto the block, throw a post-entry pass or play a defensive strategy after ayear of not doing any of that?
