Shane Battier Expects a Female Player to Make the NBA

Mark Cuban isn’t entirely crazy, according to Shane Battier. The Miami Heat veteran says that a woman will get an NBA job within our lifetime. Per ESPN: “There’s no doubt that in our lifetime, there will be a woman NBA player,’ Battier said. Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, said Tuesday night that he would consider drafting Brittney Griner, the 6-foot-8 senior star for Baylor who just wrapped up her college career over the weekend. In terms of the first woman to play in the NBA, is Griner the one? ‘I don’t know if it’s Griner or if it’s someone who is 5 years old right now,’ Battier said. ‘But we’ll see it. It’ll happen in our lifetime. Just the law of averages.’ When asked what type of player that breakthrough athlete might be, Battier said it likely would be a quick, athletic female guard rather than a taller player such as Griner. Battier pointed to his own teammate, LeBron James, as a comparison of combined athleticism and strength. ‘I don’t think it would be out of the realm of possibility that [one day] we’ll see a female LeBron,’ Battier said. ‘You could be the most skilled player in the world that the women’s game has ever seen, but that won’t cut it in the NBA. She’d have to be a physical specimen.’ Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle wasn’t willing to weigh in on the issue when asked about Cuban’s comments. ‘I haven’t watched a single [Baylor] game all year,’ Carlisle said. ‘I know she’s a hell of a player. Beyond that, I don’t want to get into the polarizing discussion about it. I think it’s important to have an owner who is open-minded and I think it’s important that the organization is open-minded. But ultimately, whether or not she can play is something I don’t want to get into.’”

We have the WNBA for women, and NBA for men… Not trying to discriminate, but if you’re going to have co-ed basketball you shouldn’t have the WNBA.

Yep, and of course, he’s gonna play lockdown D.

This is discrimination. I’ve been spending my hard earned money every year on wnba tryouts and I hear the same rap every time: we like your game but we don’t want any men on the team at this time. If she’s getting a look, I should get a chance to show that I can help a wnba team.

i don’t…with so many men competing to make it..i think there should be enough edge for there to be a better guy than the best female player..the only way i think a female player will get in is for marketing purposes

If you want women on the NBA teams, you better be willing to accept men on the WNBA teams, if not? Forget about it. The WNBA is there for a reason…

wouldn’t make sense. that’s like having a senior in high school play on the freshman team, because freshman can play varsity.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

that doesn’t make sense. are Men physically inferior to Women? There would be no WNBA if Men could play. It would just be a third rate NBA.
    NBA —- D-League —– WNBA with Men.
You don’t put Seniors in High School on the Freshman Team. But you do put Freshman on the Varsity team if they are good enough.
    It’s no different.

I hope FAFAFOOHI is joking and I think he is but I mos def get your point. It’s absurd for people to consider women in the NBA. Cuban, Battier, and whatever knucklehead who wants to put their name in headlines by saying this just needs to stop. It will never EVER happen.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

oh i know it will never happen. that doesn’t mean male idiots don’t see NBA men say these things and go seriously try out for the WNBA. LOL

If Griner enters the NBA draft and gets picked in the 2nd round in a universally-agreed weak draft, then she goes from possibly one of the most dominant WNBA players ever to a three ring circus in the NBA – pointless. As Oliphint said, there is a reason we have the WNBA.

there’s a lot of people who get the concept of gender equality wrong. Man and women are different, specially when we talk about the physical aspect of contact sports. Women can play no doubt, they are skilled and they can shoot, but they can’t take a foul the way a man can, and even if they could men would’t play against them with the same intensity because then everybody would start criticising players who play them hard. That would give them an advantage. There are many reasons why this can’t be done but everybody knows those reasons so there’s no point in mentioning them.

The best women’s player in the world would be in a spot DEEEEP on the bench of any NBA squad, if there at all. Converations like this just provoke controversy. If you say a woman SHOULDN’T be allowed in the NBA, misguided feminists will bite off your head. There cannot be physical equality when the average man is far superior than the average woman. This isn’t elementary school folks.

It takes many things to prove you are smart, but only one thing to prove you are ignorant.

OK lets put this in perspective. Griner is considered a star and an inside force in the womens game, James “flight” White and Gerald Green are about the same size and wing players and have had a hard time landing a regular NBA roster spot. Her physical gifts are not within a million miles of those 2 let alone their actual basketball ability and these are bench rotation guys at best. These guys are about as skinny as you are going to get in the NBA…even AK47 outweighs her by 25lbs. Mark Cuban is a media wh0re and Battier wants to maintain his nice guy image and not offend the female demographic.

Also Shane better check his calculations….if there has never been a female player in the NBA the law of averages aren’t exactly on the ladies side in the future.
