Stephen Jackson Released By the San Antonio Spurs

In a shocking move, the Spurs waived Stephen Jackson today. According to Yahoo! Sports, San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich and Jax hadn’t been seeing eye-to-eye for some time: “After recurring disagreements with the team about his diminishing role, the San Antonio Spurs released forward Stephen Jackson on the cusp of the playoffs, league sources said. The Spurs had threatened the release for several days, but Jackson was still surprised that coach Gregg Popovich carried through with it on Friday, sources said. Jackson, 34, isn’t eligible to be included on a playoff roster if he’s claimed off waivers or becomes a free agent after 48 hours. Popovich and Spurs general manager R.C. Buford had worked out issues with Jackson as far back as the trade deadline, and one source says the organization even offered to release Jackson and let him go elsewhere, if that was his wish. Nevertheless, disagreements over Jackson’s role resurfaced in recent days, and the Spurs believed that Jackson had started to have a negative impact on the team’s younger players. Within the Spurs, the organization didn’t believe Jackson was playing well enough to bring him into the playoffs under these circumstances, sources said.”

The lesson here is: Pop don’t take no mess.

  • Brandan E

wow, i thought jackson and Pop had a good relationship since he was on that ’03 team. but i guess jackson has really burned all his bridges.

It’s crazy how people here still think he is the same Jax as last year’s series against OKC. He got injured way too often and on top of that was dealing with some stuff outside the basketball court, which led to him being one of the worst rotation wings in the league this year. He had ok games every now and then but nothing that said “starter” or even “quality 6th man”

    Don’t forget Indiana

Many have tried and many have failed. The message is simple: do not f with Pop.

  • OneStep

Yeah, right. Given his record I’m betting that the Spurs owners, management, assistant coaches, players and fans will not be agreeing with you. After all of these years are you seriously doubting that Pop doesn’t know what he’s doing?

maybe if he actually works out this offseason he can come back and be a useful player next year…I doubt it though

  • Bruce Wayne

Are you referring to that interview in which he said he never works out in the off season? Always liked Jack but that really rubbed me the wrong way. Guys would kill to make it to the league and he has just been satisfied sitting on his spot in the nba
