Tom Thibodeau Says Derrick Rose is ‘Close’ to Returning

There still isn’t a date or timetable for Derrick Rose’s highly-anticipated return to game action, but according to Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau, the superstar point guard is close. What that means, of course, is anyone’s guess. Per the Chicago Sun-Times: “Asked if his MVP point guard was moving any closer to taking the court for a regular-season game in hopes of testing out the surgically-repaired anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, Thibodeau said, ‘Yeah, he’s close, but he’s not going to come back until he’s ready. He feels a lot better, but he’s still not there. You guys that have seen him play, his skillset is power, speed, stop, go, change of direction, so he has to make sure that he’s completely comfortable with that. He’s close, but he’s not quite there yet.’ It would be news if Thibodeau hasn’t given the same type of update in the past, but it’s almost become a tease rather than a true progress report. What hasn’t changed is that while Rose continued to look good in practice and go through all the drills, the explosion he is seeking still isn’t there. He wants to be able to play the game on instinct, not thought, and that hurdle is yet to be scaled. ‘To have the ability to do it every day,’ Thibodeau said, when asked what he meant by ‘close.’ ‘Like right now, we’re not doing a lot of scrimmaging because of where we are so it’s hard to gauge. But when we did scrimmage I thought he looked very good. But the most important thing is him being comfortable, so we’ve got to let him work through it.’ [...] With eight more games left in the regular-season, Thibodeau had already maintained that there was no drop-dead date in which the team would deem it too late for a return, but Thibodeau still had no opinion on if he expected to see Rose at all this year. ‘No, but again, it’s on him, and only he knows,’ Thibodeau said. ‘So we have to trust him. And as I’ve said many times, I trust him implicitly, and he’ll know when he’s ready and when he is he’ll go.’”

just like he was close a month ago…

  • LeroyShonuff

His return won’t tip the balance of power in the east but it can force Miami into a long series. I want him to return but at the same time I would prefer a healthy Rose next year. The wait and updates are becoming “Detox-ess”

  • RedDragon10

I honestly think rose’s return would do more harm than help. He hasn’t played with this version of his team yet and he’s rusty. I don’t think he can just jump into and expect the team will automatically be better.

  • Alex

Rust is not a big issue with the player of his caliber… When Jordan came back after 2 year retirement in the middle of the season, he had no trouble dropping 55 points on the Knicks and blending in with his team. The bottom line they will be significantly better team with his than without him.

  • LeroyShonuff

I agree… Not to be a bulls homer but it could be Jordanesque like 95. The chemistry and timing will be off. he hasn’t played a game yet with Marco, Hinrich, Butler or Nate this year. Reports are that Rose has chemistry in practice with them but it’s a difference with game speed. But his return and caliber of player he is can push this team into top 2 in the east. So the risk is there. The west is weak and with Rose we have a shot to knock off Miami…

  • thenatural

no like their odds of winning a ‘ship without him are favored… might as well bring him back

  • pposse

i cannot take this ish no more

  • LeroyShonuff

Individually? No. As a team? Yes. They will be significantly better but can they beat Miami? Maybe, but mostly not. Everybody knows this bulls team is set up for a run next year more than this year, but you honestly never knows. Miami is weak on the interior and with a return of Rose, the bulls presents the most balance attack to the Heat in the nba

  • Max

Did you just call the west weak? lol

  • RedDragon10

I wouldn’t exactly compare Rose to Jordan.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

lol, guys, he’s not coming back.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the West is weak? are you wasted?

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

I think he means East……am I trying to read too hard into the minds of the crazy?

  • Thee One

Kevin Ware will come back before D Fallen

  • Nigel

Rust is a big issue when you’re coming off on ACL tear. Jordan was fully healthy. Bad comparison.

  • http://twitter.com/apowellAdvocate Allen Powell II

They beat them in 5 with a fully healthy Rose. What has changed with a less than healthy Rose?

  • Greg

Rose is obviously hurt worse than anticipated and likely has lost a few steps.
That seems to be the only plausible scenario for all the waffling.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the East has Miami. lol – maybe the conference as a whole is a little weaker, but the East is still harder to get through.

  • Shine

    heard it like 30 times

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

i gotta agree with you here. west is not weak

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

i was equally suprised bout that statement

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    exactly

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    lol thats cold

  • LeroyShonuff

Yes i did. At full strength, no Western Conference team besides OKC can beat a top four eastern conference team at full strength. Records are just one indication of my belief. While the west may have the better records, When it comes to the playoffs majority of western conference teams will not be able to win against eastern this year.

  • LeroyShonuff

Jordan didn’t play for a full 1 and a half. he had rust. Whether it was injury or retirement related it takes away for a player to get back into the swing of things

  • LeroyShonuff

One of the biggest differences is a fully healthy boozer and noah along with the emergence of butler. Not saying Chicago will win, but the competitive nature of the series does jump

  • Caboose

He said that no West team outside of OKC can beat the TOP FOUR East teams in a series…so that means the Spurs can’t beat friggin Brooklyn in a 7 game series? Dude is STUPID.

  • Caboose

    The average Bulls nut would.

  • Caboose

Right, BUTLER is the freaking key to beating a Miami team that added Ray Allen.

  • Max

    Ofcourse Leroy, ofcourse.

  • Max

The West’s top 5 is better than any East team not named Miami IMO.

  • roscoe

oh idk greg there could be a few other reasons out there.

    i. drose is CHI future
ii. dorse mentally is not ready (injuries mess w/ everyone)
iii. CHI is being overly careful to not have Roy 2.0 amongst other examples
iv. CHI does not believe they can win a chip this year with him so why risk it

  • eli86

The bulls stoped the heats wining streak if they beat them without rose its gonna be a blow out with him. When rose comes back hes gonna be better then he was

  • robb

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Irishway’s

I don’t like this scenario… yeah i want to see Rose back in the line up, but i don’t want his first game back, game 1 of the first round.

  • JL

I think Rose comes back in the next few games. But he’ll play limited minutes at first, and also probably not play back to backs or whenever his knee is sore. It’s a big question mark if he will be ready by the playoffs begin, but he can be effective as a bench player.

  • Greg

Sitting out close to a full year is not the solution unless one is still hurt.
Mentally weak? Uh, is that what you want the face of your franchise to feel?

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Butler is great but if this matchup came up I still see D-Rose being way too ball-dominant for them to effectively break down the Heat D.

  • dmirror

Only good team in the east is miami

  • Jeff

He didn’t say mentally weak. There is a psychological component to any comeback after tearing an ACL … look at Ricky Rubio. He’s not still hurt. He has been cleared by doctors, but there is a transition period that DRose is trying to get over. In my opinion, he won’t be able to get over it without playing real games. I think he is being overly cautious, but I would not say mentally weak.

  • Greg

Except Rubio came back within the expected timeframe.
And there was no hesitation. with how great everyone says
He is doing, including himself, it’s not unreasonable to believe
That a setback has indeed occurred.

  • TomH_DRose

Can’t wait for Derrick Rose to return! It will be such a boost for the Chicago Bulls. He might just have to get used to playing with the new trades such as Nate Robinson. Other than that, Derrick Rose will be as good as always and will show other teams who’s boss. But he won’t come in until he is fit enough for a return, and Tom Thibodeau will reinforce that.

  • ThunderFanKP

Noah and Boozer are arguably playing the best basketball of their lives. And Deng just does Deng. If the whole roster stays healthy the bulls can push Miami. Remember, a physical Pacers and Celtics gave them a beating. I think Bulls can do the same. And who knows, Wade or LeBron might tear their ACL and the east would be up for grabs.

  • Joshua

He has to be overly cautious dude. It’s the rest of his
Career on the line in my opinion I suggest he should come back right before the playoffs to get a taste of the intensity before the playoffs and if he manages like he did before he tore his
ACL then that’s great. But I don’t believe he is mentally weak or overly cautious he is just not trying to risk further acl injury

  • http://twitter.com/thursti_tyht Thurstian Tsui

Oh man I hate the Heat but let’s hope that doesn’t happen to Bron. They’d give Miami a good series I think but I don’t think there’s a way they can win a 7 game series.

With a bulls team that’s healthy and a healthy d rose we have a chance. But,we have to put them out early we cannot let them hang around 7 games they’re not gonna be swept so we will have to beat them in 5or6. The chemistry who knows thins system more than rose keep the key players learned it well Bel,rob, taj,Butler besides not h aving a7footer our whole bench is upgraded Heinrich set well to keep running the offense when rose needs to break if y’all paid attention to our team they build that bulls team strictly to beat Miami so let’s see if thibs start butler at the2 and if our starting 5 is healthy you’ll just how we’re build to beat Miami.
