Danny Ainge Thinks Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce Will Return

The Boston Celtics are facing an offseason of great uncertainty — there’s no telling what’s next for Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and head coach Doc Rivers. According to GM Danny Ainge’s gut, all three will return to Beantown next season (though Pierce is a trade candidate.) Per WEEI and CSNNE: “Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge called the recent Stephen A. Smith rumors [of a feud between Ainge and Rivers] ‘silly,’ indicated Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett will return next season, Rajon Rondo should be back for training camp and Paul Pierce‘s future is the first tough decision he has to make his summer. On Pierce: ‘I think Paul has a lot of basketball left in him.’ On Doc: ‘I think Doc will be coaching the Boston Celtics’ next year. On Garnett: ‘I do anticipate KG will play.’ [...] He was less positive, however, talking about Pierce. ‘Conversation with my coach, conversation with Paul and his representatives [will play into the decision to bring Pierce back],’ said Ainge. ‘Opportunities that may present themselves. There’s a lot that will go into it, but it hasn’t even started yet, we have until June 30 to make any decision. Listen, Paul’s been one of the greatest Celtics of all time and that will play part in it. We love what he’s done for us, but ultimately we have to do what we think is the best for us from this point forward. And I think that Paul still has a lot of basketball left in him.’”

i would really like to see pierce finish his career in boston but i doubt it will happen. out of the 15 mil he is about to make next season only 4 mill is guranteed. ainge knows that it is time to to move forward

Totally time to move foward. Need Young blood, get Al Jefferson and start filling in the other pieces.

Dam… #AGE ALL GREEN EVERYTHING. PAUL came along way from the stabbing.. I would love to see him retire as a Celtic

  • underdog

I’d like to see both of these future HOF players retire as Celtics. I’m not sure if it’s going to happen, but still.

The NBA should establish some kind of provision to allow guys like Pierce retire with their original teams. It still pains me to think of Pat Ewing in that Sonics jersey, or Hakeem in a Raptors uni. If you’re a future HOF and have spent at least 15 years with the team that drafted you, the league pays your salary(vet minimum) until you retire.

Oh the Irony if they got Al Jefferson

Danny Ainge needs to blow up this roster because realistically even with the “Big 3″ back next year they still can’t beat the Heat, Knicks, and the Bulls (with a Derrick Rose). It’s time to start thinking long term and not short term.

If I were in Danny Ainge’s shoes this is what I would do:

    1. Trade Pierce and ask him where he wants to play, release him, or move him to the 2 guard and have Jeff Green start at the 3
    2. Ask Garnett if he’s going to retire or if he wants to be traded along with Pierce
    3. Go after a big man, either Al Jefferson or Andrew Bynum
    4. Make a run for Josh Smith
    5. Try going after J.R. Smith or O.J. Mayo for the 2 spot, if they can’t sign either one of them try getting Tony Allen to come back unless he re-signs with the Grizzlies.

Potential Starting 5 for the Celtics 2013-14

    PG Rajon Rondo
    SG Tony Allen
    SF Jeff Green
PF Jared Sullinger or (Josh Smith, if they can get him to sign)
C Al Jefferson (more likely to sign then Bynum)

    6th: Avery Bradley
    7th: Jason Terry

why would you want bynum..no way he would last with doc..he is lazy and doc would not want to deal with him in training camp much less the season! he is bum.plan and simple. i know you cant teach height but sullinger is more than adequate!

  • KingBenjamin

    Andrew Bynum isn’t a bum.

  • Nigel

    Nope, he’s an oft-injured bum.

  • danpowers

    great idea man

  • Dreynot

Only flaw is that Kobe technically would not qualify for this, and I think just about everyone would agree that he is and always will be a Laker.

  • Dreynot

How do you trade a coach?

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

    Déjà vu.

You gotta be all technical? Lol OK, if you’ve PLAYED 15 years with one team.

I hope they stay. this is literally more important than basketball- its about culture, about what it means to be a celtic. its what made boston , SA , and LA great- that they looked after their legends. And why franchises like the knicks, or others have floundered- they havent kept their guys, guys who are legends walking around the place make a difference in the culture everyday. These guys- even if they cant play in a year – deserve to go out as celtics- what they do for the culture of the team isnt measurable in stats- how they influence the city, the younger guys, the practises etc. KG deserves his jersey retired, and in a city like boston, for the celtics, as well as minesita, but he definetely deserves to go out on his terms, likewise pierce.

After reading this, I wonder do ppl still consider Ray Allen disloyal for leaving on HIS OWN TERMS…If they are considering trading a key player that played his heart out 14 seasons for them, it goes to show that they would have most definitely traded Ray…

  • phil

    no she doesn’t…

  • Ugh

You should also work for the company who hired you out of school, and stay with them for the rest of your life if you worked 15 years with them, so you can retire with that company. The government should pay the last ten years of your wage/salary (minimum wage) until you retire.

Sounds awesome for everyone involved, doesn’t it?

You really gotta lighten up man.
