Josh Smith Hints At End To Tenure With Hawks

After getting booed in Friday’s elimination loss to the Pacers, Josh Smith said he wants to “experience free agency” and didn’t sound eager to re-sign with the Hawks. Smith will be looking for a max contract, and it’s doubtful that he’ll get it from the Hawks. From the AJC: “When the cameras were turned off and almost everybody, Josh Smith said what he really thought. Of course he knew this was probably it. ‘As I walked off the court, everything just sort of hit me,’ the Hawks’ forward said late Friday night. ‘Just the uncertainty of what the future holds. Just thinking about all of the relationships I’ve had here and the people who’ve crossed my path since I’ve been here. I just … I just don’t know.’ Does he want to come back? ‘The only thing I know is I want to be able to experience free agency. I want to explore my options and see what’s out there. I don’t have any certain idea what’s going to happen.’ He didn’t sound like a guy eager to return. The fact most in attendance Friday night didn’t sound eager for him to be back — screaming the usual ‘Nooooooooos!’ when he pulled up for jumpers and booed when he missed — speaks volumes about the situation.”

They should have traded him before the deadline. No idea why they kept him.

He doesn’t have max contract talent…

maybe they didn’t find any takers. whoever would have traded for him would also risk losing him for nothing and be in the same position that atlanta is in right now

J Smoove and Atlanta also have a bit of an axe to grind too right?

Devil’s advocate but he’d be a perfect piece for the Rockets, athletic tweener big that can kind of stretch the floor would fit right into their high paced d.

Hey, if I was playing to a half-empty arena during playoff time, I’d be wanting to leave town too. Just sayin’.

    half empty? damn lol

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    agree on this

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

rather have howard in h town

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

wanted a good play off run?

  • Josias Johnson

What’s a good playoff run? They’ve always been a one and done or 2nd round exit kind of team. They weren’t going to do any better than that.

cant blaim him. when i saw the knicks playing in atlanta, there were more knicks than hawks shirts in the attendance and the loudest and almost only reaction by the crowd throughout the game were MVP-chants when melo went to the line late in the game. that city apparently doesnt want its nba team. why not shift the hawks on to seattle?

  • TR

Does LA amnesty Pau and bring him in to keep Howard there? I’ve got no idea about the finances just curious if its possible

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

thats all the hawks is known for. quick exits

  • jmm

Confidence is such a huge part of basketball – how are you meant to hit jumpers with your own fans screaming “NO” at you? I’d get out of there too.

  • Josias Johnson

Depends on where he was traded. Pau Gasol in Atlanta? Move Horford to his true position which is the 4. Move Gasol to the 5. Josh Smith would be the athlete D’Antoni needs for whatever kind of system the Lakers were playing. Dwight and Josh, good friends. Would both stay in LA.

  • Josias Johnson

Which is why they had no good reason to keep him unless they couldn’t find any trades worth doing.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

the whole franchise needs a make over.. its been stale since the mutumbo, smith, blaylock days

  • http://twitter.com/NYCKING BIG ED

Josh Smith isn’t a max player and doesn’t give max effort times. Someone will overpay for J-Smith.

  • spit hot fiyah

d’antoni’s system is not based on athleticism as much as the ability to shoot from the outside, an ability that j smith lacks. and he could also leave after the summer, doing trades based on who is good friends with someone is not really good idea

  • spit hot fiyah

see post up thread. since when can he kind of stretch the floor?

  • Josias Johnson

Dwight would have more incentive to stay with Josh being there. There was talk about him wanting Josh with him in Orlando years ago.

  • Leopold Butters Stotch

Well the arena looked half full to me.

  • Drig

I’d rather we lose Howard than amnesty Pau and lose him for nothing. And I say that with a straight face.

  • ATL dynamite

This is ATL every year. We are pathetic :(

  • ATL dynamite

Given Smoove’s level of game in the playoffs, if he could ever get a max, Al Horford should too. Roy Hibbert too. Paul George should get a doubled max. Stop whining for that contract Smoove smh

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

it does, from the high lights i seen the other day.

  • TR

Yeah I hear you, I think Josh Smith is a nice pick up, with or without Dwight. Lakers have a veteran team and he’ll be in check at all times so to speak.

  • shockexchange

There is a chance his tenure will be ended an it may be ended by the Hawks.
