LeBron James Prepared to Guard Nate Robinson

With Derrick Rose out of the picture for the Bulls/Heat series, LeBron James wasn’t supposed to have a one-on-one challenge on the defensive end. After the surprising Game 1 result, Miami may need to call upon LeBron to shut down Nate Robinson at crunch time. James says he’s up for the challenge. Per the Miami Herald: “The Heat’s uncharacteristic defensive lapse in the fourth quarter of Game 1 continued to gnaw at Heat coach Erik Spoelstra a day after his team’s 93-86 loss to the Bulls on Monday night. The Heat was outgunned 35-24 in the final period, with the Bulls scoring the final 10 points of the game. At the center of Chicago’s dominant late-game charge was diminutive point guard Nate Robinson, who scored nine of the Bulls’ final 12 points, including the last seven of the game. The days between games in a tight series are always about making the proper adjustments, but Spoelstra bristled when asked a question about his decision to sub out defensive specialist Norris Cole in favor of starter Mario Chalmers with 5:38 left in the game. With Chalmers and Ray Allen guarding the perimeter, Robinson had a hand (points or assists) in 14 of the Bulls’ final 17 points, including a driving, finger-roll layup that put Chicago ahead 90-86 with 45.5 seconds left. ‘The guy had [27 points], so he had it going most of the game,’ Spoelstra said of Robinson. [...] After Monday’s defensive debacle, LeBron James said he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if he was ‘stuck’ guarding Robinson late in games. ‘I’ll take the challenge on anyone,’ James said.”

    who would’ve ever thought…

When he guarded Jason Terry in 2011 finals he got beat. Nate will prob do the same thing and use his quickness.

I hate how they have to announce him guarding out of position EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

Oh no! He’s guarding Chicago’s second/third-string point guard!

The funny thing is, James will make a negligible difference to Robinson’s game. He can’t contain that guy because James needs to respect his shot (unlike Rose).

  • Sizzle

Don’t like this. I think instead of having Battier on Boozer/Noah, they should switch to have LeBron guard Boozer/Noah. Too many times last game Battier was out of position on swings/rebounds. Even if LeBron is out of position, his athleticism can make up for it. Nate’s going to be Nate. Plus, if the Big 3 shows up and Battier or Miller hits those wide open shots (I mean WIDE open) they had the entire first half, Nate’s points aren’t the difference Yet here we sit. Hopefully Spoelstra doesn’t overreact to Nate’s performance. He is pretty much the only guy playing now for that team that can get his own shot whenever he wants. Win the board battle and it will be fine. Excited for Game 2.

  • DannyAingesBarber

No way! A basketball player is going to guard somebody on the opposing team! That’s crazy!

  • FLIGHT 9

    hahahahahahaha NATE WILL KILL HIM

  • shockexchange

Nate is in the Heat’s head. He has already won the mental aspect of the game. Besides, while LeBron is guarding Nate who is going to guard the forward LeBron is no longer guarding?

  • underdog

Well, Bron had told the media, he was disappointed his name wasn’t involved in the DPOY talk, because he can guard all five positions on the floor. Now, he can prove that against the Bulls.

  • Caboose

Chalmers on Bellinelli, Wade on Butler. That’s a better defensive matchup anyways. I’m surprised this Heat team doesn’t play zone the majority of the time, they’re athletic enough to pull it off.

  • Fat Lever

Um, doesn’t Chalmers consider himself a top tier PG? If he is who he says he is, shouldn’t he be stepping and being vocal on taking the challenge? Its sad that Lebron has to step in when Chalmers has an opportunity to back up his talk and doesn’t.

  • Heat Fan Boca

Put Cole on Robinson. Match speed with speed. Let Cole even foul out if necessary.
In fact have LBJ , Cole, Chalmersswitch off.

  • shockexchange

We shall see. The Heat still needs to make open shots though.

  • Caboose

And Wade and Bosh to wake up. They must have had the Jeopardy theme playing ad infinitum in their minds.

  • Daniel Noel

    not probably, HE WILL

  • DMacc722

What bout the year he guard derrick rose in crumch te an the won the serios 4-1 come on now he can gaurd nate Lets Go Heat

  • airs

    top tier. LOLOLOL
    chalmers sucks.

  • airs

bellinelli destorys that match-up, any day.

  • Bandwagonfan

Nate>rose in terms of clutch and heart.

  • Dagger

You mean, like he does EVERY. DAMN. GAME?

  • ATL dynamite

I’m more interested in how Jimmy would lock Lebron up. Dude’s got mad improvement this year.

  • LakeShow

    Don’t do it LBJ!
As great as you are LeBron this is a no win situation. You happen to slow him down, you “slowed a 5’7″ guy who can’t stay on a roster.”
You don’t slow him down… and “you can’t slow down a 5’7″ guy that can’t stay on a roster.”
Send that kid with the weird hair at him.

Lets ignore when he guarded Derrick Rose the round before that shall we?

I totally forgot about that! Thanks for heads up. But should be awesome to watch then go @ it. Hopefully no stitches for Nate again.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol, Who knows. I’m not really expecting the game to be close enough for it to matter today either way.

  • Kadavour

Rose can’t shoot as well as JET. He could afford to lay off enough to contain the drive. Just a different match up.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Well naturally. Nate Robinson is 5’8″ and batsh*t crazy. He is just as different from JET as Rose is

  • shockexchange

Caboose that has got to be the most appropriate use of “theme from Jeopardy playing ad infinitum” the Shock Exchange has ever heard!

  • pposse

Bron will only switch onto Nate in the fourth quarter or at end of quarter situations. There is no way they are going to have Lebron not in position for defensive rebounding. It really doesnt matter tho, they will lose the rebound battle regardless; the only thing saving the Heat right now are the men in Zebra print. Its all a matter about when Noah will get his second foul. If these guys beat us on the boards in a fair matter, i’ll tip my hat off to the Heat

  • pposse

the Heat arrogance will cost them this game, yall better prepare for a dog fight. Wade had the audicity to show up for post game interview with woman’s clothing, Bron alluded to the layoff, Bosh the same thing can 7pm get here any sooner. #SeeRed lets goo

  • pposse

hopefully he doesnt pick up two cheap fouls at the beginning of the game..

  • spit hot fiyah

wasn’t involved? only got second place

  • http://www.facebook.com/jamere.hagler Jamere Fridge Hagler

I guess he never heard the phrase….pick on someone your own size!!! LeBron gets less respect from me more and more each day!!!!!

  • spit hot fiyah

jason terry was not a video game

  • Slick Ric

Nate game is different from Roses and is actually more comparable to Terry’s.

  • pposse
  • underdog

Woops, my bad. Thanks for pointing that out!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

False. Nate creates off the dribble. JET moves off the ball. Nate is a PG. Rose is a PG. JET is a SG. .
They are all completely different. Definitely no way to claim Jet’s game is closer though, fundamentally that is wrong. Their style and position are completely different. They are just both undersized and good at shooting.

  • Dagger

You mean, he hasn’t proven that before? Selective amnesia always pops up after a game or two in the playoffs.

  • Dagger

I would hope that Lebron cares more about the win than the possible (minimal) damage to his reputation as a stopper if Nate goes off. Nate might be the most unpredictable player in the league, and he will probably still get buckets given the roll he’s on, but nobody in the NBA has the combination of quickness, strength and defensive IQ that Lebron does.

  • Dagger

Because he averaged 18 PPG through 8 games in the playoffs? This is getting a little ridiculous.

  • http://twitter.com/1993Freckles Conor O’Hara

Agreed. Especially with Noah & Boozer hoarding the paint. Miami will need all that LeBron can give them on the glass.

  • http://twitter.com/1993Freckles Conor O’Hara

Or is called for two fantastical fouls.

  • O

The Heat are gonna BLOW OUT the Bulls tonight.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    lord have mercy on nate.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

at this point, thats all we have left to believe in

lol but all in all Nate Robinson has been playing crazy. Short man with a whole lotta HEART! Mini 50 Cent

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Lol that’s fair

  • Bassbesteck

Never underestimate any player in the NBA, i get it… But we’re talkin bout a 6’8 guy (with great speed and athleticism) guarding a 5’7 guy… Yeah, tough defensive matchup… Imma guard the sh** out of that 12 year old too…
