Mike Woodson Unhappy the Knicks Wore Black for Celtics ‘Funeral’

The New York Knicks humiliated themselves in Game 5 by wearing all-black, assuming they were there to bury the Boston Celtics. Heading into tonight’s Game 6 back in Beantown, head coach Mike Woodson is not pleased with the distraction created by his players. Per the NY Times: “I’m a little upset about that,’ Coach Mike Woodson said Thursday, ‘and I’ve addressed that.’ Coming from Woodson, who strenuously avoids criticizing his players in public, this was as strong a statement as there could be. The Knicks have greater concerns after failing twice to close out the series and allowing the Celtics to turn a near sweep into a 3-2 nail-biter. Their 92-86 loss Wednesday would have been troublesome anyway, but it looked much worse given their misplaced confidence. ‘Shenanigans’ is how Celtics forward Jeff Green dismissively referred to the Knicks’ paint-it-black fashion statement. [...] No team has ever won a series after losing the first three games, but Carmelo Anthony has never won a Game 6, or played in a Game 7. Everyone is in uncomfortable territory here, and the pressure remained squarely on the Knicks, who were heavily favored in this series, as they prepared for Friday’s Game 6 in Boston. The Celtics have already pushed themselves into rare territory, as one of 12 teams (out of 107) to force a Game 6 after trailing by 3-0, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Only three teams have ever forced a Game 7. The line between confidence and overconfidence can be seen only after the fact. Win, and be celebrated for your boldness. Lose, and be condemned for your foolishness.”

it’s never over till it’s over. Thats No.1. No. 2, I find it very disrespectful to do anything related to funerals and dressing in black against Boston. The bombings happened a few weeks ago and people shouldn’t play with that. There’s people who lost parts of their bodies, while others lost their loved ones. That’s just not right IMO.

  • Max

It had nothing to do with the bombing.

  • roger rogers

while what they did was dumb, what did they had absolutely nothing to do with neither the bombings or the resulting funerals. Please dont pull stuff out of thin air.

Melo should have stopped it. Best player. Supposed to be the leader. Looks bad that he didn’t. Will look worse if they lose this series.

i’m sure they didn’t mean for it to have anything to do w the bombings, but you can see how trying to create an aura of destruction, death, and funerals when playing a team whose city was recently bombed is kind of stupid, right?

Its the first round, Knicks have not won anything and have the arrogance of perennial champions. Nothing would please me more than Boston bringing this back to MSG & Jet getting the game winner in G7.

  • Andrew

Imagine if someone did that right after 9/11. That was essentially Boston’s 9/11

  • LP @ThisisEther

The real question: Can they get the suits dry cleaned before tonight’s game?????

  • bike

The Curse of Carmelo. Only been able to get past the first round in, what, once in 9 tries? He’s got a couple of loose cannons on that team and he needs to have a talk with ‘em. Being the leader on the first team in history to get eliminated after a 3-0 start isn’t a great thing to have on your resume, Melo.

  • LP @ThisisEther

No……Stop Reaching!! Ol “Deron WIlliams on defense” type of dude …..

  • pposse

how mentally inept are the knicks? Did they all really just dress in black to game 5 bc K Mart said it would be Boston’s funeral?!

  • aj

im a celtics fan, but this was clever. good boy

  • aj

    meh

  • LP @ThisisEther

Yes, and by all means its just a joke. I think The Celtics will actually win tonight and the game after that….

Celtics players are listening to Doc Rivers and playing the kind of team ball he has preached all along. Knicks are going to tune out Woodson and keep playing isolation one on ones, and 3 point shots. Everybody is banged up on both sides, but now it’s the mental toughness that will make a difference, and the Knicks look like they are tightening up with some nerves now. If Boston gets past them, I don’t give ‘em a chance against Miami, but putting the Knicks in their place with no Rondo would be sweet, and give them encouragement to keep things together for another run with a healthy Rondo. Go Green!

No..last I checked it’s not possible to kill a guy by playing basketball. Their intent, albeit stupid, was to say we’re ending this series..not kill a guy. When you saw them did you think “oh god..they’re menacing!”?

    Really makes ZERO sense.

these dumb knicks always gets caught slipping

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

shut up, i lived 30 min away from the twin towers on 9/11. unless you see something like that in person,, go preach somewhere else bruh.

  • anikpara

Re you serious? The dressing in Black was arrogant for sure but there is no way that was a stab at Boston Bombing victims quit reading into it so much. They’re already people who do that called media…..

  • Tupac

Please dont compare this to 9/11.

This is why the Knicks won’t win the championship this season.

  • robb

I know they didn’t mean it. That’s the problem. Sometimes athletes are not aware of certain things and they should, and a lot of fans too. I remember those knicks fans booing Pierce the other day. That’s not right, it’s not a crime but it’s wrong.

Motivation is one thing. Disrespect is another.
