Danny Ainge Says the Brooklyn Nets Wanted a ‘Dream Team’ at Any Cost

With the Boston Celtics looking to rebuild and move on, GM Danny Ainge jumped at the opportunity to trade Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry. Ainge says the Brooklyn Nets, in their desperation to build a “dream team”, made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Per the AP and Boston Herald: “It was the first thing Celtics general manager Danny Ainge told Kris Humphries on Monday when the two sat down to talk: ‘We’re not tanking.’ … ‘It’s the first thing he told me, too,’ said Keith Bogans, who came to Boston along with Humphries, Gerald Wallace, MarShon Brooks and three first-round draft picks in the deal that sent Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Brooklyn Nets. Boston also sent Jason Terry to Brooklyn and acquired Kris Joseph. [...] ‘‘I’m not sure I used that word,’ Ainge said, though both players said he was very specific with his expectations. ‘I think every player wants to know what the rules of the team are. I assured (them) we’re going to try to win every game.’ [...] ‘Brooklyn showed a great deal of interest in putting a dream team together … at any cost, it seemed like,’ Ainge said. ‘We felt like, where we were as a team, it was going to be very difficult to be a championship contender (had) we kept Paul and KG. The opportunity presented itself. It’s a situation we needed to do.’ [...] ‘Instead of having a farewell tour this year and letting them go by the wayside, to be able to get the young players and draft picks, as hard as it is for some fans, as hard as it is for me to do when I care as much as I do about them, it was the right thing to do for the Celtics organization,’ said Ainge. ‘It just softens the blow that they get to go together and play on a great team.’”

    tank city

And they’re still not better than the heat, bulls with a healthy Rose and the pacers. I didn’t even mention a single team on the west coast.

  • Fat Lever

Dream Team? Maybe if this was ’08 and not ’13.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

if they are healthy, this is the second best team in the East. But i would not wager on them being healthy.

  • north

Ainge pulled a rabbit out of his hat trading 3 ageing, currently overpaid players to grab picks, young players and contracts that he could move. As great as PP and KG were in their prime, they aren’t anywhere close to prime any more. And we saw how diminished Jet was last year.
The Nets, with their new head coach look like a potential nightmare for fans. I can’t see them rising in the standings at all.

  • bike

    ‘We’re not tanking.’

    Plausible deny-ability.

looooool ok there nbk. you need something called Defense to advance in the eastern conference. Deron, a wash up JJ, softy Lopez & a bunch of old dudes ain’t defending anybody. specially not miami indiana or chicago

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Johnson is actually a pretty good defender. Lopez is as well. Garnett is still the premiere defensive 4. And Kirelinko is coming off the bench. They will be good enough and experienced enough to be very very in the mix if they are healthy

  • spit hot fiyah

joe johns on has been a solid defender for years

  • LakeShow

I was going 100% tard and thought you were talking about the Celtics lol… I was like damn… This nbk guy is something else lol.

Naw I agree that they are the 2nd most talented and have the ability to be as good as #2, but injuries will play a part. The Pacers, Knick’s, and Bulls have to stay healthy also.

  • LakeShow

You do realize you don’t have to be hyper athletic and young to play great defense right?

  • LP @ThisisEther

    1. Chicago

    2. Miami

    3. (insert any other teams)

“But i would not wager on them being healthy”……. I’m glad you put this in there……

  • RipCity

with rose back healthy chicago will be 1 or 2 in the east this year imo

  • Bostonbean

I know a 14 year old Boston girl that’s claiming Danny Ainge raped her.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I am not talking, nor do I care about the regular season. If healthy, Brooklyn has the second best shot at coming out of the east far as I can tell.

  • Bostonbean

Danny Ainge also is a rapist

  • RipCity

i still would take chicago in a series. Rose, Deng, Butler, Noah, Boozer & Gibson>Williams, JJ, Pierce, Garnett, Lopez at this time in their careers. Get in the playoffs with the old guys on the nets worn out and probably battling injuries and the bulls should be able to take them

  • LP @ThisisEther

the Bulls officially own the Nets after this past year.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

This is a totally different team. And no. They don’t. Especially with Garnett and Pierce on the roster. Winning a 7 game series when both teams share minimal resemblance with themselves the following season is not “owning” anyone.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Yeah I mean I don’t fault you for feeling that way. I just don’t agree

  • RipCity

i can see the nets side and if their healthy they’ll put up a fight. im expecting bulls nets and knicks heat in the second round this year the east should be alot better this year the pacers will make serious noise too

  • LakeShow

    I know 58 more.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

The Knicks? You mean the Pacers? The Knicks will be no better than they were this year.

  • Caboose

No way Knicks get out of the first round.

  • Caboose

Depending on injuries, this could be the most or least competitive East in the past 5 years.

KG will be 38 next year. And, in 7 playoff games JJ average 3.1 rebounds 1 steal and 0 blocks per game. good luck to AK47 and Lopez cause they’ll need it

  • Basketball_iQ

D will and Joe ALONE had this team a #4 seed. I think this was major upgrade. The players Boston got back are complimentary at best with Brooks being the only one capable of fulfilling his potential. This is an audition of sorts for them as “trade pieces” but Brooklyn will do well, no doubt.

  • Basketball_iQ

They owned the Nets bc nobody outside of d will or Joe could create their own shot. Oh and Lopez didn’t have help at all vs Boozer and Noah. Meanwhile, the Bulls lost Boozer and Nate .
can’t double anyone, Paul is one of the best spot up shootersin the game right now not to mention he can still dribble drive versus anyone eespecially isolation mismatches and there will be a lot of ‘em,,
The person I see getting off having a great year is d will and versus Chicago,,,, nobody has ever accused Rose of playing defense. And he’s coming off a knee injury,,, he will be different,, be ready for that.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

    That was your first mistake…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ok? KG was 37 last year…….and 36 the year before that. So that does make sense.
and since when do those defensive stats say anything about a shooting guards ability to guard his man?

  • Da-Meat-Hook

I would say between both teams, Brooklyn has 5 of the top 6 players at creating their own shot.

Also, when you look at the last season Chicago had, I’d say Rose’s knee and Noah’s constant battle with Plantar Fasciitis are of greater concern that the Nets’ age.

  • LP @ThisisEther

The Bulls lost Boozer??? didn’t know that…interesting….

Deron won’t cook Rose… I think Rose is more likely to win that battle…Rose’s defense isn’t awful, despite what you guys think….This Net’s team won’t be great defensively, they couldnt even stop the CRIPPLED Bulls offense last year (W/O DENG AND ROSE!!) …. you think old KG and old PIERCE will change the fact that the BULLS own the NETS??? no disrespect to pierce and KG………

Also, whatever Offense the NETS are bringing to the table gets SHUT DOWN by the BEST DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE. only MIAMI can get off against us at FULL strength.

Book this. In a GRIND IT out 7-game series, the Bulls have the upper hand against any and ALL teams in the league except Miami… no exceptions.

  • LP @ThisisEther

The Bulls will be totally different also… Full strength NOAH (was at 60% last year against the nets)…. Full strength Rose. Full strength DENG (didn’t even play). Hinrich? didn’t play…

When these two teams meet again, the Bulls will be more different than the NETS. advantage CHI-city.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

The bulls will be more different? The Nets have 3 new STARTERS. a new 6th man. and a new coach.
The Bulls will look like the team from 2012 bro…….(oh hey, Luol Deng is being shopped by the way, idk if you’ve heard but i know your a Chicago guy, so thought i’d take the opportunity to let you know).

  • Evan Boland

If truly, 100 percent healthy, I’d say 1. Unless of course, Wade also returns to form.

  • LakeShow

lol, that sh*ts too funny. Just stare at his eyes and try not to laugh LMAO

  • LakeShow

Right… I guess kind of like always. Injuries are a motha f*ck.

I take it you re-thought about your LbJ>KB all time right? That was some wack sh*t you were on lol.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity lol

How is Kobe better than Lebron all time? What tells you that Kobe is better? Stats…No. Accomplishments…No? All Around game…No? Helps team…No?

http://ballislife.com/infographic-comparison-jordan-kobe-lebron-at-age-28/ (keep in mind that Lebron now has 4 MVP’s 2 Legit Finals MVP; Kobe has 1 legit Finals MVP)

Bruh, realtalk. The only argument ppl fallaciously give is 5>2 which is flawed as evidenced by above dude’s link.

2nd, ppl give argument that Kobe is more skilled when in fact no stats (reproducible objective tangible evidence states this) show this. Kobe might have a nicer looking shooting form and arguably cleaner handles but what does that matter if his FG% and 3PT FG% are lower?

Is John Stockton the best basketball player ever b/c he “looks” like a more skilled basketball player than other.

Ya’ll dont make any rational sense. Just b/c you want something to be true that doesn’t mean its true/factual or that people are hating?

  • LakeShow

My god you guys… i’d love to not call names if possible so i’ll try and resist.

    How bout this:
    More rebounds.
    More assists.
    More points.
    More games played.
    More free throws made.
    More All Star games.
    More Championships.
    More playoff games.
    More Steals.
At least 5 years more super star years than Bron currently has.

Is that so hard to understand?

  • MikeC.

I have to go grammar police on that one. Something can’t be more different. Different is an absolute. It’s either the same, or it’s different. Something can’t be more different.

  • CommonSense

with your logic…a 15yr player is better than a Rookie of the year or even a third year player. Better yet, you would probably pick a 13 year veteran over someone like Damian Lillard to James Harden? simply b/c he has more totals only b/c he played in the league more. You’re not considering equating the seasons they play or anything like that to see who is more productive and more efficient? No you’re simply reduced to 3rd-grader logic. It’s okay to like players, but don’t become so disillusioned with so much ignorance to post such faulty, deceptive statements. You can’t stan the faxt that Lebron has outproduced, outdone Kobe in virtually every category thus far in his career 10seasons to Kobe 1st and EVEN if you want to take Kobe at his best, people would and should take LeBron Right now. Everywhere you look, Lebron is mentioned in the names of Jordan, Russel, magic etc. Bron has arguably more Finals MVP than Kobe and literally wasted his 1st 7 seaons in the league. Imagine if he had a hobbled wade and shade of himself Bosh and better supporting cast his whole career up to date he’s prolly have about 6 rings by now (NO WAY THO is this Heat Team beating the Lakers 3peat simply b/c shaq was a monster who took over those series…wade at prime kobe at prime I’d give to Kobe but throw Bro in there it would either b him or shaq finals MVP).

  • LakeShow

    You’re really, really, stupid.

You actually thought the argument was about who is currently better???

    Think better!

  • backboard

OMFG! You guys are still talking about Kobe and Lebron? EVERY GOD DAMN DAY??? FOR YEARS??

I cant believe that some of you regulars even still get into this shit.
This topic has so been talked to death. So so tired of it! Some ppl
should be a little embarassed about getting on this page and mulling the
same shit over and over and over again. Absolutely ridiculous. Ok, rant
over. Ill go back to the dark side, reading and laughing about you
clowns like the 10000 others, that never comment, do.

  • Clos1881

I really feel they’re gonna win it all next year.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

This is a solid statement, I think a healthy Pacer’s team as constructed will have a close, if not better shot. It all depends on Granger…. if he is healthy and how they use them. Or if they shop him for a playoff peace mid season.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com/ Dutch Rich

Nets suffered from bad spacing all throughout the year. And a slow offense. The ball will be moving a lot more. I promise.

  • Mike From Spain

I think that a lineup with AK47, KG and Brook Lopez playing at the same time can be very good defensively. You can go also PP, KG, Garnett, and rest Lopez. Kirilenko can play the 3 or the 4, and thus give 10-15 minutes rest to PP or Lopez. It would also be good to limit the minutes AK47 and PP play during the regular season to about 30.

  • Feez_22

Are you talking in terms of career? If so then ya obv bc kobe has had what… 7 seasons on lebron? ( i guess you can say 5 if you don’t count the dell harris years). Lebron will pass up kobe in rebounds, assists, points, all star games, playoff games(naybe) and steals. I dunno about championships or free throws made though. chips require good teams to come together and the heat look like they may split this big 3 up soon. Lebron’s a terrible ft shooter so ya obv that goes w/o saying.

Individually though, i get why people would say lebron>kobe. you should too. his averages, versatility (facilitator that can score 27 a night on one end to a legit defensive anchor on the other) and all that other jazz + being a 4x mvp/2xfmvp only being 28 years old. I think lebron is the better player individually but kobe is clearly more accomplished (but again, mainly because he has played longer and has played on more good teams than lebron has).

Thus, if a person has lebron over kobe in their all time rankings, you should realize they do because lebron is a 4x mvp/2x fmvp as the leader and best player. Nothing wrong with that.

OH and btw… if you go by stats, lebron was a “superstar” in this league for 9 seasons v. 13 superstar years for kobe (lebron became an nba superstar in his 2nd yr v. kobe becoming one in his 5th year). that’s a 4 yr superstar diff even when kobe has had a 7 yr head start over lebron. just a heads up. lebron is coming unless he has a career altering/ending injury.

  • LakeShow

Why would you ever think I was arguing Kobe was better right now.

    Just read.
    retard wrote:
“How is Kobe better than Lebron all time?”

Does that sound like currently or all time?
I hate having to read things for people. Read next time.

  • Feez_22

… Did you read my first paragraph? i acknowledged that if you said “career’ kobe was more accomplished but only because he played 7 more yrs and played on better teams throughout.

Besides, i just explained to you why people would already jump to the conclusion of lebron>kobe all time. refresher = 4xmvp, 2xfmvp. alrighty then.

  • LakeShow

So is Steve Nash better than KB all time?

Derrick Rose, Dirk, Shaq all have the same amount of MVP’s as KB.

I mean shoot man. Allot of guys have more than 1 MVP that aren’t better than KB all time.

    Moses Malone has 2.
    Bob Pettit has 2.
    Karl Malone has 2.

KB has the rest of the accomplishments on his side right now, due to time put in. Just wait for chicken to hatch is all i’m saying.

  • Feez_22

… well, no. steve isn’t better than kobe bryant. There is a diff between having 1 or 2 mvp’s to kobe’s one v. 4 and rising to kobe’s one. Major difference. You can luck into 1 mvp because of good timing/good team accomplishments (like d-rose did) but not 4. only a handful of players in nba history have 4+ mvp’s and 2+fmvp’s. so ya… bad analogy.

I’ll give you a better comparison. Since kobe has played longer than mj did, i am pretty positive that he has passed mj up on totals in rebounding, assists and maybe steals? i could be wrong on the steals. He will also probably pass up mj in points and has passed mj in all star appearances. He’s passed up mj in games played and playoff games. He is 1 championship away from mj’s total of 6. However, since kobe has passed mj in all those other cats does that make him more accomplished and >mj career wise? Just a question.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

  • LakeShow

MJ and KB are like 1,000 points apart. So it’s slightly more comparable.

LeBron has scored 10,000 less points than KB.

Just wait for the chicken my man.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i think you two are arguing different points. Kobe has accomplished and won more. And he’s done it for a longer period of time. He’s the “greater” player at the moment.
At the height of his powers, he was never as good as LeBron is now. So he is not really “better”
Lake is more arguing the former, you the latter.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

You do realize Joe had plantar faciitis during the playoffs don’t you?
