Danny Ainge Wants Celtics to Retire Jerseys of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce

Celtics’ GM Danny Ainge may have dealt Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Nets last month, but he still wants them to be remembered as Celtics. Per the Boston Globe: “Regarding Pierce and Garnett, Ainge said, ‘If it were my decision, their numbers would be hanging in the rafters some day. Their legacy has been made here in Boston and they still have basketball left in them. At the same time, we’re still going to want to beat them.’ And what does he expect when they return to TD Garden for the first time next season? ‘The reaction and emotion should be a standing ovation for 10 minutes,’ he said, ‘and to be grateful for everything they’ve given us.’”

I dont understand Boston’s thought process, why would they retire kg’s number and not ray allens? they came and almost left at the same time. Boston is mad Allen for leaving when they were going to trade him anyway like they just did kg lol they wouldn’t won a ring without either one, Idk I just think you can’t retire a # when you only been there 5 years, I think it’s gotta be double that imo

Paul Pierce number should be retired and I think KG’s number should be too. He would have stayed with the Celtics forever and he was the leader of the two NBA Finals apperances. Ray Allen just messed up, I stated he would not get his number reitred after he left and signed with rivals. Then he helped the rivals win a ring. Ray Allen will not have his number retired with any NBA team and they call him the greatest 3point shooter on TNT all the time. I take Reggie or Bird, but Ray got what he deserved, no retired NBA jersey for a journeyman. He has played for about 4 teams and will be another one after Heat don’t resign him next year.

The Wolves just better retire KG’s number before the Celtics do

I know a 14 year old Boston girl that’s claiming Danny Ainge raped her… Sad. She’s about to go public

I think he’s ok with having the all time record for most 3s all time/playoffs as well as 2 NBA Championships. Don’t think having a jersey retired is really something he worries about.

    Thumbs up sir

  • Evan Boland

Yeah, ’cause he’s all for himself, so I’d agree with you.

Kind of easy to be all for yourself when the organization constantly tangles you as trade bait. Loyalty is a two way street let’s be real here.

  • Evan Boland

Loyalty to your brothers that you just lost in war in a beat down drag out game seven. I ain’t even saying he had to stay. But to join a team that just broke your champion aspirations weeks before? WEAK. Must not having a competitive bone in his body.

So it’s okay to retire kgs number because he left on Boston’s terms and not ray allens because he didn’t wait to be traded?

Has there ever been a Hall of Famer who didn’t have his number retired anywhere?
Actually, it wouldn’t surprise me if Miami retired his number. They’ll hang just about anyone’s number in their rafters. Even players who never played for them. And Tim Hardaway. Tim was nice and all, but if you’re hanging a number for the small accomplishments of those 90′s Heat teams, you’re desperate to manufacture some history.

Well Pierce and Garnett were loyal and look where they are. Bottom line you can point the finger at Allen all you want but Boston was chicken sh*t for trying to trade him several times and then act like they really wanted him to stay. People would’ve got their draws in a bunch no matter where he went to. And not competitive? Ok man.

    no doubt

I would like see KG’s number retried by the Wolves before the Celtics do. I understand the impact of Garnett in Boston, but there’s a reason why he was known as the “Big Ticket” back in Minnesota.

Paul Pierce on the other hand, truly deserves his jersey hung next to McHale and Bird.

  • Evan Boland

Yeah, so join the team that just kicked your ass. Try to imagine KG, Pierce, or Rondo doing that, and you’ll see what separates them from Allen. Heart. Competitive fire.

  • The BigThreeEraEndsAfter5Years

I think all three of them should have their jerseys retired for restoring the franchise, although it was short lived. Paul should definitely have his jersey retired, no matter.

  • Ji23s

They were both wrong. Boston was trying to get rid of him, treating Ray like crap but Ray was wrong for joining the team that beat the Celtics in a 3-2 comeback, I think that’s worse than LeBron leaving the Cavs, it’s not like the Cavs met the Heat twice in the conference finals.

  • SFJSFG123

I think fans are more mad that he chose to side with the Heat.

  • Boston Fan

Love KG & Ray Allen but they came here as hired guns, Paul Pierce is the Celtics Franchise Player of the generation. #34 will be retired.
