DeJuan Blair to Sign With the Dallas Mavericks (UPDATE)

UPDATE: The big fella seemed to confirm the rumors this afternoon, tweeting his excitement to be moving on to Dallas and saying goodbye to San Antonio: “SA you always in my heart! … Dallas!!!!! Now lets have some fun!!!!”

According to ESPN, the Mavericks and free agent big man DeJuan Blair are inching ever closer to a deal: Sources said that the Mavericks — who remain one of six finalists for the services of Greg Oden — are in advanced talks to add Blair to a revamped rotation of front-court sidekicks for Dirk Nowitzki. With one source saying Tuesday that a deal looks ‘promising,’ the former Spurs center appears poised to join new projected starting center Samuel Dalembert and the re-signed duo of Brandan Wright and Bernard James in a posse of centers to play alongside Nowitzki after Dallas lost out to Houston in the Dwight Howard sweepstakes. Although the Mavericks are essentially restricted to offering minimum contracts at this point in the summer after making a number of signings post-Howard, they continue to hold out hope that Oden will decide that Dallas is the ideal place to launch his comeback under the watch of longtime Team USA trainer Casey Smith and team doctor Tarek Souryal.”

surprised that more team have not shown interest. plays very well anytime he gets a chance but was buried on one if the deepest benches

  • spit hot fiyah

and it’s reportedly for the vet’s minimum. why weren’t the clippers knocking on his door a month ago? their big man back up are going to kill them

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

can the Mavericks look anymore like an 8-seed?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Dejuan Blair is a trainwreck defensively. I don’t think LAC was interested in any big who would make their already bad defensive big man rotation, even worse.

  • spit hot fiyah

at least he can get some boards and score inside. i would take him over mullens and hollins any day.

  • Jake

Does anyone know why he fell out of the rotation in SA? I thought I remembered him being a starter during his rookie season. Knee problems?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehh, that’s like adding a lesser blake griffin to back up blake griffin. i have never been a fan of adding a lesser version of a starter on your team to your bench. i am a proponent of versatility.

  • spit hot fiyah

i wouldn’t mind. and i really don’t see mullens bringing a lot of veratility

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

uhm, he can shoot………he’s 7’0″ tall. – Blair can’t shoot, Blair is 6’9″
    .
and he really doesn’t rebound much less than Blair.

  • spit hot fiyah

clippers already loaded up on shooters, and mullens can’t really shoot: below 39% from the field and below 32 from 3.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he still hits a 3 a game, as a big man who started for Charlotte. He now will come off the bench, only playing when it helps the team. He adds a ton more versatility than Dejuan Blair would.
    .
And loading up on shooters is true, but none of them play PF or C. It adds to versatility to have a big off the bench unlike any other’s on your roster.

  • spit hot fiyah

i hear you man, i just don’t know how much of what he brings will help them. he hits a 3 a game but has to shoot more than 3 of them to get there on average. none of their wings or guards are players that score on the inside a lot. i just thought it would have been better for them to go with someone who can really help them inside some more since they are loaded on the perimeter. specially if they are available at the vet’s minimum. i’m not high in the clippers this year unless they add something to their front line.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i’m not high on them either. i just don’t think anything they could have added would have changed that. i don’t think Dejuan Blair puts them over the top against any contender. but i do think with more versatility, Doc will be able to find or have a better chance to find mismatches and advantages within a given match up. Something that can give them a chance against teams they shouldn’t really beat.
    .
    Make sense?

  • spit hot fiyah

i see your thinking. and it doesn’t make sense (joke)

i’m thinking that they might have to try to play a lot of small ball this year with the roster they have and all those guards/wings.

doc will really be tested, it will be fun to follow.

if they go small a lot they might have a chance to get a really good regular season record. but when they face a team that is strong inside (grizz, rockets, spurs) they will most likely get smashed.

so for a better chance at surviving that scenario i thought they should have tried harder to go for an inside player (didn’t have to be blair per se, he was the one that came to mind because he was mentioned)

i mean they are not stupid, if they see that they are really hurting at that position or some other during the season they can always make a move.

    make sense?

  • TR

“mediocre” and “aight” are the first 2 words i think of when i see this roster.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah i mean definitely. i think you are assuming Jordan and Griffin play less than they do. Doc is not going to limit their minutes, if inside presence is what they need, he’ll play those guys 36+ minutes a night.
    .
i kind of think the misunderstanding is in how you value depth vs how i do. i don’t count on LAC using it a lot. Which is why i’m a proponent of versatility. When your starters are this much better than anyone on your bench, I think versatility becomes the key to success.

  • spit hot fiyah

alright cool and i agree. key phrase “When your starters are this much better than anyone on your bench” when deandre jordan is BY FAR the second best big on your team, u have an issue.

and i don’t think griffins minutes will be limited much at all no matter how they play, doc will use him like crazy. jordan doesn’t strike me like player that doc will fall in love with. he might end up on the bench a lot, hence, enter small ball.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I agree about everything but Jordan. Remember that Kendrick Perkins guy?

  • spit hot fiyah

yeah i remember him, not as good at dunking as deandre. but a much better one on one defender and he could actually hit a jumper from outside the lane from time to time. and he seemed to be (and seems to still be) a great locker room guy.

i dont see a whole lot of similarities

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I’m sure Doc gets DeAndre to have a much better season as a one on one defender then Vinny and his system did. Protecting the rim as a help defender? He’s already better than Perkins.

  • spit hot fiyah

yeah i hope so for the clippers sake. doc has his work cut out for him with this roster, considering his rep and the high expectation that they now have. it will be a whole lot of fun to follow that’s for sure

  • RKJ92

He can’t play defense to save his life, so he’s more of a liability then an asset.

  • Jake

Ahhh okay, that makes sense. I have never seen him play before so I was relying on paper to tell me how good he is.

  • RKJ92

Ya np, he’s essentially just a big body that can put up around 10/10 with liable defense. he’s a quality role player on most teams in the league though just through his motor.

  • Ron

    Remember that backboard dunk?

  • LobCity

The Clippers did want him but he wanted a bigger role/more money. They were an option for him, but always considered a long shot. He didnt end up getting more money so I’m guessing they promised him the role he wanted.

  • jason

hes still kin of better than Deandre Jordan though

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Not on defense. Not even close.

  • jason

    there you have a point

  • jason

Also the Clippers don’t want to get rid of dj because he an Blake have good chemistry
