Elton Brand Signs With Atlanta Hawks for $4 Million

The Atlanta Hawks have inked veteran free agent foward Elton Brand to a one-year, $4 million deal. Per USA Today and the Hawks’ team website: “Elton has four, five quality years left to play,’ agent David Falk said. ‘He’s not a person who makes plays with his speed or jumping. He’s a player who makes players with his head. He’s not concerned with starting. He’s knows he’ll come off the bench. He’ll be able to play quality minutes at the four (power forward) and five (center) when teams go small. He played both in Philadelphia and Denver. This is a good opportunity for him.’ Falk likes the situation in Atlanta. Falk was Ferry’s agent when Ferry played in the NBA, and Falk has known Ferry’s dad, Bob, since the mid-1970s. He believes in what Ferry is doing with the Hawks, starting with the decision to hire Mike Budenholzer, a former San Antonio Spurs assistant, as coach [...] ‘Elton brings a veteran presence both on and off the court and is a welcomed addition to our locker room,’ GM Danny Ferry said. ‘His ability to play center or power forward will give our frontcourt a great deal of versatility and we think he will be an outstanding fit to our program.’ Brand, 34, tallied 7.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and 1.0 assists in 21.2 minutes per game (.473 FG%, .710 FT%) in 72 games (18 starting assignments) last season with the Dallas Mavericks. The 6-foot-9, 254-pound big man has played in 932 career games (848 starts) over his 14-year career with Chicago, L.A. Clippers, Philadelphia and Dallas, putting up 17.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.8 blocks in 35.2 minutes (.500 FG%, .738 FT%). He ranks second among active NBA players in offensive rebounds (3,170), fifth in blocks (1,707), seventh in total rebounds (8,516), 14th in field goals made (6,347) and 17th in points (16,242). A two-time NBA All-Star (2002 and 2006), Brand owns 404 career double-doubles and was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 2005-06. Additionally, he won the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 2006 and is a two-time divisional winner (2004 and 2007).”

    Elton played in Denver?

  • JML-G

no idea why Hawks would need him and no idea why Brand would sign with Hawks instead of a contender (he didnt want to go to NY?!).. hoped he would return to Clippers

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

“Yay, now we have 3 versions of the same player” – Atlanta Hawks Magement

  • Dfrance

Same questions I asked when TMac randomly signed there a few years back. Maybe its the strip club scene. lol

  • spit hot fiyah

4 million that the clips and knicks couldn’t give him

  • Dfrance

    He must have meant Dallas.

  • Robe Rayant

Cool. I like it for ATL. Elton coulda been a contributor on a contending team before, but maybe no longer because of the rise of the stretch 4. Also, trying > tanking.

  • jmm

Wish Knicks had grabbed Elton instead of MWP…

  • Guest3

Brand signed with them because they offered him $2M more than any other team would have but I don`t understand why the Hawks signed him. They already have Horford and Millsap at PF. Atlanta has greater needs at starting center, small forward, and shooting guard. Maybe the hawks are trying to acquire the rest of their needs via trade. They do have some tradable assets. Brand gives them another asset.

  • LP @ThisisEther

they want Brand to possibly play the 5 some…..this could possibly give Horford time at the 4…this is my only explanation….

  • Da Real

EB is worth almost the entire mid-level exception? This makes no sense

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Versatility as Ferry said, it’s the whole point. Plus Brand reaches 7´5 inches in the air, so he got some pretty long arms and a good body to bang with. I like what Ferry says about how he prefers a shorter big man with skills, than some random 7 footer.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

How do you read my comment and get that I would agree with the versatility aspect of what Ferry is claiming?

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Not quite sure what you mean. But i’m not too concerned if you agree or not. Just adding my thoughts to the table.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

there is no versatility in having 3 guys who are basically the same player at slightly different heights. i understand stating your opinion, why did you state it there is what i’m asking?

  • Caboose

    The Minnesota of power forwards.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Well i believe that when you have 3 guys who can switch between each others position, you are versitile. What do you make of the term?

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

these are easier to combine on the court than three pg’s

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they are all power forwards. Al Horford is a power forward masquerading as a Center, Elton Brand is a power forward who now has to play Center because he’s slow. And Paul Millsap is a Power Forward who can kind of play small forward.
    .
The big problem with 3 Power Forwards like this? They all have the EXACT SAME strengths and weaknesses.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Easy with the EXACT thing. It can also mean that you don’t have to dig into your bench to find one who can do your job. They compliment each other in that way.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

sure they compliment each other if the goal for your team is to avoid versatility.
    .
and they do have the exact same strengths. go ahead and point out the differing strengths if they exist.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

allright mr. have a good one.

  • Caboose

Brand, Horford, and Milsap all on the court at the same time is a trainwreck waiting to happen.

  • Caboose

    You’re confusing versatile with flexible.

  • Guest

Ok sorry if I am, not too good with english words. So is being versatile means your have different abilities?

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Sorry if I am. So does being versatile mean that you have different strenghts? not too good with the english words

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk
  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Ok, but do you believe it’s a bad thing, because I don’t. Guess that’s the important thing.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

depends on how successful you want the team to be i guess. If you just want them to make the playoffs, I think this move is a positive. If you want the team to make moves towards being a contender in the near future? I don’t think this, or Paul Millsap were very intelligent.

  • Caboose

    Ah, no worries:
Versatile: having a wide variety of different skills or abilities that can be applied as the situation demands
Flexible: having the ability to change personnel or lineups without a severe drop in productivity

The Hawks have become quite flexible down low, but have lost all versatility. Cool?

  • Caboose

The Hawks seem content to be first or second round fodder for eternity.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Well they are good trading assets with good salaries. So taken the promising rookies will grow in to themselves and with the flexibility cap wise, i think this look better than in a long time. Plus these guys are solid players, but with great personalities. They are gonna give it their best I can asure you.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

this move probably yanked them out of even second round contention lol.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

    nah, just wait.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

But who cares? It’s not about now, but looking ahead now. Don’t be so pesimistic

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

But that of course will not be what they do most of the time
    ¨

  • Caboose

The Hawks will have difficulty making Playoffs this year…

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

    mos def ;)

  • Max

    Still getting that money.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

this move does nothing for the future. nothing at all.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah in all likelihood they finish like 8th. assuming everyone is healthy.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

who is a good trade asset? Elton Brand sure isn’t.
And Paul Millsap is at max value right now. He isn’t going to get anymore valuable. It’s not like they even can trade him for the next 3 months.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

brick in the wall. EB in himself is just a solid pickup when you think of what was left.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

lol, this was David Falk finding his client the most money he could get…..from a team whose GM used to be one of David Falk’s players. Let’s not lie to ourselves about this being a decision to help the Hawks as a basketball team. This was about making Elton Brand happy, and building/keeping a relationship with a high powered agent. It’s a political move more than a basketball move. If you want to focus on the future that is.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

But with short or expiring contracts. And not to forget, this is a bright time in some sorts for us atl fans, just to get rid of the old core who wouldn’t get us anywhere anyway.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

I’m sure that’s part of it all, but i think you are making too much of it. It’s a big body and an expiring contract. Both good for flexibility ;)

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the team didn’t rebuild tho. getting rid of a core would imply that you are starting over. instead, Danny Ferry brought out the super glue and tried to create answers in ways that make almost no sense.
    .
again, unless you just want to be a fringe playoff team for the foreseeable future. i get the Elton Brand signing from a basketball perspective, i just don’t get it right after the Paul Millsap one.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the expiring contract is great for flexibility. except Paul Millsap is making $10 million next season when that flexibility should find it’s use.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

And I can understand that. The plan for Ferry is to together with coach Bud, build a good program and bring some professional big hearted players, and bring winning along with it. It’s not like there were tons of free agents out there this year anyway. That’s why the short contracts.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

again, i get the idea. having a good concept and executing them are different. the free agent class in 2015 is shaping up to be much like the free agent class this year. 2014 is the year for free agents. But the Hawks have just given away all of their cap room in 2014. Unless they trade the guys they just signed/re-signed

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Yes, and maybe that can happen. Still too pesimistic man.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Besides. Have you seen the rookie Shroeder? he and Bebe will be good in those years we are talking about.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

seeing as how the Hawks franchise has gone about it’s business throughout it’s history, i’m closer to realistic buddy.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Can’t be like that as a fan though. Wouldn’t be exiting then

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL, Dennis Schroeder is going to what? he’s still going to be a back up, playing 15 minutes max for the next 3 years.
    .
and Nogueira? hopefully he cracks the rotation by then. If he’s not still in the D-League. Where he will be before the end of this season.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i guess if that’s what you watch basketball for, sure.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Dennis is more ready than you state. Bebe needs to bulk up and is def not ready this season. But in time they will be really good, and add versatility.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Always had a problem with you talking like your opinions has more right than others. Calm the hell down

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ahh, is that so? right after you tell me i’m wrong about Schroeder because you say so huh? double standards are cute.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he is! why didn’t more people notice and pick him sooner i wonder? 17th in a very weak first round sure screams of “ready for the NBA” doesn’t it? especially considering he’s 19 years old. Sure is bringing in a ton of experience in a style of basketball similar to the NBA…..since he played in Germany and everything…..
    .
    yep, that makes sense.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

    have you seen him play?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    yes.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

It’s not even like that. I just in a civil manner tell you what I believe is true, which comes to mind when you say somthing I don’t agree with. I’m not putting it down your throat like you kind of has grown acustomed to.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Different views then. I see good things.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

All the “LOL’s” and the CAPS isn’t really needed is it now. Or does it just feel too boring to speak like respectful people.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL if i think something is funny, yeah.
    .
putting stuff in caps is disrespectful? so, if i just used bold print would that be better? making it so a point stands out … is disrespectful?
    .
then i respectfully call you a sissy. in all lower case letters.
(might as well label this ^ since it’s probably going to make you mad. this is a joke, you aren’t a sissy. just messing with you.)

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you see good things because of his success in Germany? or is there more to it?

  • Guest3

Brand is a trade asset because he`s on a 1-yr deal and he`s not severely overpaid. He`s only overpaid by $1M-$2M. Many teams are preparing for the 2014 draft class and free agent class so a contract that expires at the end of the 2013-14 is definitely movable.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

did i call it immovable? it’s just not netting an asset in return.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Depends on how you use it. Like hanging people out or using it for writing correctly. You know as well as me that I don’t care about this the second I close the computer, so stop being tough. I’m talking a general thing

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

    Yes Summer league

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

What about it makes you think that says something about his NBA future?

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

19 year old: Court vision, speed, seems like he has high basketball IQ, better shooter than rondo was coming out, Quick defender. Stats game 2: 9 points 8 assist 4 steals 4 rebounds. 19 year old.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It’s not disrespectful. It’s just a way to emphasize a point

  • Guest3

That`s the only point I was trying to make: that the contract is “movable”. “Trade asset” was the wrong word choice. Tbh, I don`t know why they would sign Brand unless it was to include him in a future trade because Atlanta really doesn`t need another PF. I certainly wouldn`t have paid him $4M especially since Dallas paid him $2.1M last season on a 1-yr deal but maybe Ferry has something up his sleeve. I`m guessing all $4M isn`t guaranteed.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It’s guaranteed. And David Falk has gotta be why it happened. He’s the common denominator

  • Caboose

The only way “Knicks” and “contenders” should be in the same sentence is if there’s a “not” in between them.

  • Guest3

Yes. I am well aware of Falk (MJ`s former agent) and his influence/connections. It isn`t rocket science. Falk`s relationship with Ferry is the only way to justify Brand`s $4M, 1-yr contract.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Thats fair, just Don’t be too disappointed if Summer league performance tells you absolutely nothing about his NBA future. It wouldn’t be the first time. Or even the hundredth.

  • Caboose

    Case in point: Jimmer.

  • Sardo Numspa

    dude… he’s right… stop being pedantic.

  • Sardo Numspa

    Yes

  • Sardo Numspa

Um… can I have a go? Brand is the best offensive threat of the three, by far. he has decent skills and footwork that skill wise puts him in the top 20 players at his position in the L. Horford can’t do what Brand can do offensively, but he’s a better overall rebounder and defender than Brand. Millsap has lost a step athletically both offensively and defensively, yet he can step in to fill either Brand or Horford’s spot.
I agree with u @Nbk that Atlanta isn’t going any ware anytime soon with twin towers like that, but honestly I wonder why coaches don’t use the Popovich inspired big man tandem of yesteryear anymore.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Elton Brand? What year did you type that part about him in? He is going to play like 20 minutes a game. He’s pretty much a liability on both ends at this point for anything longer than that. If not immediately.
    .
Paul Millsap is like 28, I don’t know how you claim he lost a step? He just had another really good season, so it’s not like that comment is based on any evidence.
    .
Popovich used whatever rotation gave him an advantage. Boris Diaw played heavy minutes with Duncan and at Center. All from primarily 18+ feet away from the hoop. Which is anything but traditional.
    .
Why more coaches aren’t flexible? That’s more what I question.

  • danpowers

that rondo comparison was the worst thing that couldve happened to schroeder because people, especially in germany, will hold him to that standard. rondo is a more or less unique case. and its unlikely that shroeder will find himself surrounded by a hall of fame trio, giving him that much free space to operate and tutoring as rondo had in boston.

i expect schroeder to be proper nba material at the age of 21 or 22. he has yet to build an nba physique and handle the transition from european to nba basketball which is extremely difficult and a rare thing to successfully work out, especially for german point guards. misan nikagbaste anyone?

he is still a nice pickup for the hawks in the long run and could probably give them some solid minutes as a backup straightaway as his flaws wont be exposed that badly against other second unit playmakers. that will just not change much for the hawks mediocore roster which is sad because id love to see decent guys like horford on a contender.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

He seems to be able to make that transition. From what I’ve seen, he is very confident and under control. I don’t care about the rondo comparison. Yes he does have a lot of similar parts in his game as rondo, but that sure isn’t a bad thing as long as it isn’t rondos jumpshot. I saw him in Nike hoop summit as well. I really like his upside

  • danpowers

highlight tapes, nike hoop summit and a couple of summer league games are not really a big sample.
ive seen all that too, plus ive seen him play over here in germany for some time. i dont argue that he has mad upside and the potential to become a decent nba player.
but there a thousands of kids each year with the same upside and better physical preparation in the usa of whom only a handfull even make it to the nba. it really seems like nowadays its “easier” to make it to the nba as a talent coming from europe than coming from the usa. just wait and see how he does against this competition during the season.
all im saying is that it is way too early to seriously be able to predict his impact on the nba.

the probability that he will be a difference maker for the better on the hawks within the next 2 or 3 years is pretty small. i wouldnt rule it out, just doesnt seem very likely to me.

  • danpowers

i am still bored so here is my list of the top 10 power forwards of all time

    1 duncan
    2 malone
    3 garnett
    4 nowitzki
    5 barkley
    6 gasol
    7 mchale
    8 rodman
    9 webber
    10 kemp

(no petit hayes or shayes crap in here. yes theyve been good compared to their competition / athletic training / blahblah of their time. in todays nba they’d be lou amundson at best. kemp or cwebb at their peak in that time would be machines who’d eat everybody alive so mchale is as far as it goes -hands down)

  • LLC#12

I can’t believe how many comments this post has. Elton Brand signs with the Hawks, and everybody loses their mind.

  • initbruv

Sir, you are too polite, well-behaved, and emotionally in control to be on a comment board.

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

I understand and I certainly agree on the part where you say it’s too early to say anything for sure. But that is the risk for any new player, just to hang around during to the competition. But I have watched and played basketball my whole life and have a pretty good idea, when someone has the tools to become good. Tools is also having the right mentality, and combined I believe that he has that. You talk about watching him next season and how he’ll do. That’s not even a concen of mine. As long as he stays in the weightroom and around veteran guys, his gonna pick it up and develope whatever upside he has. His gonna be good, the question is how good.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Great comment man

  • danpowers

“But I have watched and played basketball my whole life”
    -havent we all? lol

i hope that youre right, dont get me wrong. what you say about him just also appeals to many others who try to make it in the nba each year and not all succeed. there is no guarantee whatso ever. i guess were on the same page though and have our fingers crossed for him to make it in the nba.

dirk is going to retire in a couple of years so i need another german landsman over there

  • danpowers

not too bad for a “f*ckin idiot” and “moron” i guess lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol apparently just a Knicks induced moron ;)

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Never said you didn’t play nor watched basketball, just telling you that I don’t just throw names around for fun. I completely agree that there is no guarantee. When ever is there? I’m Danish. Still waiting for our first landsman to make it. Sure it will happen some day though ;)

  • danpowers

we should somehow ban soccer over here in europe. that’d help alot lol

  • Thor Christian Sulsbrück

Couldn’t even imagine that! The problem is though, that we aren’t too good at that either in Denmark lol.
