Lakers Reportedly Will Not Trade Or Amnesty Pau Gasol

With Dwight Howard gone, the Lakers plan on keeping Pau Gasol for the remaining year on his contract. The Lakers were reportedly willing to amnesty Gasol if Howard re-signed in L.A. But now, if all goes well with his knee rehab, Gasol should be starting at center for the Lakers next season, according to ESPN.com: “While the Los Angeles Lakers were understandably disappointed when Dwight Howard called to tell them he was leaving to sign with the Houston Rockets late Friday afternoon, there was a silver lining. Now that Howard is gone, there will be no talk or discussion about using the amnesty provision on forward Pau Gasol anymore, a source with knowledge of the team’s thinking told ESPNLosAngeles.com Friday night. Gasol will likely slide over from power forward to center and be featured in that role, as he was on the 2009 Lakers team that defeated Howard and the Orlando Magic in the NBA Finals. It remains to be see who will fill the power forward role — Metta World Peace, Jordan Hill or rookie Ryan Kelly — but the Lakers feel Gasol is a much more natural fit as a center in coach Mike D’Antoni’s offense than he was as a power forward. Had Howard re-signed with the Lakers, Gasol — who will make $19.3 million in the final year of his contract — was a candidate to be let go via the amnesty provision as the Lakers look to deal with their luxury tax issues. No firm decision had been made, the source insisted, as the team’s preference was to look for ways to keep Gasol. But now that decision has been taken care of with Howard leaving.”

Free Pau Gasol from that hellhole of a team

  • Dagger

Gasol is going to put up some huge numbers next year. People will remember why he was considered the most skilled big man in the game a couple years back.

  • underdog

    Wish they would amnesty D’Antoni.

  • MUBWAR

Just amnesty him so he can sign with the heat for a vets min

  • pio2u

Hill will need to be the PF because Pau is not a very strong defender or rebounder. We don’t need a 3 pt scorer at the 4; we need an inside presence or two to protect the rim. Hill will need to be an enforcer .

Knowing how D’Antoni operates, he will probably start R Kelly at the 4 and try to make him into Channing Frye. BTW, I can’t resist labeling Ryan Kelly as R Kelly. It always cracked me up seeing “R Kelly” next to this goofy looking white guy’s face whenever they introduced the starting 5s on TV because his ugly mug is like the opposite of bump-n-grind lol!

a coach just got traded, so kupchack should look into that

  • spit hot fiyah

everyone knows this except for d’antoni

  • spit hot fiyah

    it doesn’t work like that

  • OfftheWall87

Dude who brought you 2 championships has to wait for a dude who he beat for one of those championships to go elsewhere before he can feel secure about his place. Either way, next season will be a bad one for the Lakers.

  • RunNGun

After being treated like 5#!T last year during the DWIGHTMARE Sweepstakes, Pau should demand a trade or demand to be amnestied.

  • Dagger

Still, Howard leaving might be a nice birthday gift for him today (he’s 33). If he puts up big numbers next year he might get a smaller pay cut in his next contract than what he is currently facing.

  • KB37

The lakers should sign a guard like Brandon Jennings.

  • MasterSplinter

Lakers need to sign Greg Oden, David West, and Nate Robinson. That would about cover Dwight’s whole next years salary.

  • MUBWAR

Y not. Blatche was amnestied by the wizards. They still payin him so he signed the vet min with the nets for a chance at a championship. Y cant pau do the same

  • spit hot fiyah

teams under the cap get to bid for the amnestied player. the one that offers the most get him. and pau would be offered much more than the vet’s minimum and teams under the cap would have the first chance to get him.

  • Drig

Sadly, D’Antoni was given a new contract AFTER the new CBA was passed, which means that he cannot be amnestied just like Steve Nash.

  • Caboose

You are aware that Kobe, Pau, and Nash take up the entirety of the Lakers’ salary cap right? Like, they literally can’t sign anyone right now.

They can for sure sign Oden, I also think they should amnesty Nash, sign Nate Robinson, Keep Pau for this year….Or trade him for young (but great) talent, seeing as if I was Pau I would sign elsewhere after next year. As long as the Lakers are intelligent and strategic with their roster moves in the next year and a half, they can have a great situation for 2014-2015. The only player that is under contract as of now is Nash for 9.7 Mil (who they should amnesty for the good of signing a Brandon Jennings, or Nate Robinson)…But that’s just my humble non-factor of an opinion.

  • C-Mac

Only players who signed contracts before the lockout season are actually eligible to be amnestied, so the Lakers can’t get rid of Nash that way.

  • Caboose

Nash can’t be amnestied, and actually, the Lakers have $77mil already on the books for next season. Meaning the only players they can sign are to the veteran’s minimum. Amnestying Nash (even if they could) wouldn’t put them under the salary cap. Hell, amnestying Pau wouldnt put them under the cap this year. The Lakers literally can’t make moves this offseason, simply because of Kobe and Pau eating away at 90% of the available cap space.

  • Caboose

With their non existent cap space? I’m sure Jennings would play for $1.3 mil a year, right?

  • Caboose

    That post hurt my brain.

  • playa

That’s how fans operate- “lakers should just amnesty this, sign that, trade this bla bla bla” – the further from reality the better it seems.

  • The Seed

Pau is our consistent player with Kobe, no need to get rid of him. We needed Josh Smith or Milsap.

  • roscoe

i really wonder if LAL will ever amnesty a player that can still play.

i can see LAL amnesty a player who will never play again, but not for $$$.

  • roscoe

    “our consistent player”

your a fan… wake up braH

  • Basketball Coach

and side note on Howard leaving, the Lakers now knows Pau’s value to them.

Maybe you should re-read my post Caboose, I said the 2014-2015 season, not the 2013-2014 season….You are however right about the Nash info, not that it changes my opinion on them being in a good position if they play it right.
