New York Knicks Reportedly Interested in Monta Ellis

Among the various teams interested in free agent guard Monta Ellis, are the New York Knicks. It seems like an unlikely marriage mostly due to finances, but Ellis reportedly is looking to join a contender next season. Per CBS Sports: “A union of Ellis and the Knicks is viewed as a long shot, as the Knicks have only the $3.2 million taxpayer mid-level exception available. Ellis just opted out of a deal that would have paid him $11 million next season in Milwaukee. But Ellis, 27, and his Washington, D.C.-based agent, Jeff Fried, are known to be willing to compromise in order to sign with a contending team. And the Knicks, who face the free-agent loss of sixth man of the year J.R. Smith, would provide ample opportunity for Ellis to showcase his scoring prowess deep into the playoffs. The Bulls, Spurs, Nuggets and Suns also are among the teams who expressed interest in Ellis as the free-agent negotiating period began Monday at 12:01 a.m. ET, league sources said.”

    Make it happen, Bulls!

  • i_ball

If he is willing to take a pay cut to go to a contender why would he even consider the Knicks. I hope SA sing him, they, sadly, need a new guy for Manu’s role so they are not that dependent on him

  • i_ball

On the other hand, Nate, JR Smith and Monta on the court together would be epic

  • Dagger

Suffice it to say that adding Ellis and Bargnani to the Knicks would not move the team any closer to a championship.

  • Al29

    A. The Knicks are not contenders.
    B. There’s no way Ellis, STAT and Melo could share the ball. In fact, no two o those guys could be on the same team.

  • spit hot fiyah

agreed, i see the spurs as front runners if he is willing to come of the bench and fill manu’s role as a scorer. he can’t create for other like manu but at the same time he can probably avoid turning the ball over every other time he touches it.

why even post that the knicks are interested if they have no chance at getting him?

  • Stepfan Raiford

    Is this a joke?

  • Trillfamyoungin

    my nuggets if iggy leave…..

  • danpowers

hell no! is grunwald on vacation while a student apprentice is in charge? i’ll kick off a petition soon: drug tests for knicks front office executives

  • danpowers

    or the playoffs at all

  • danpowers

i’d die by a heart attack before the all star break

  • Reedo

    Derrick Rose
    Monte Ellis
    Deng
    Boozer
    Noah

Would be a scary back court

  • OfftheWall87

This would be Melo and a poor man’s Allen Iverson playing together. That didn’t work so well in Denver with the real AI. Won’t work now.

  • Mike Gilbert

Jimmy Butler is our starting 2…

  • Mike Gilbert

no please don’t we have Jimmy Butler

  • Max

Jr Monta Melo Amaré Bargs yuy!

  • Dev

Yeah I never liked Monta cus he takes terrible shots and scores, thats it. Even tho we need more scoring, I’ll pass

  • RunNGun

RunNGun also said a while ago that Ellis would go to the Knicks. Walsh made it happen.

  • Dev

    That might work

  • LakeShow

I like that: “Even tho we need more scoring, I’ll pass”

  • Drig

This deal doesn’t have a chance of materializing. But still, hypothetically speaking :

Melo, Ellis and Amare with JR coming off the bench……………

Get ready for tons of iso-ball, pouting, irrational shot-jacking and headaches NYK fans!!! NYK FO – Taking care of the fanbase like no other!

  • J-Man357

@ Dagger……totally agree. I dont know WHAT the knicks were thinking with these moves. I am hoping that this is just the first of a few chess moves that they have in mind, otherwise the team will be significantly less talented next season. Bargnani is a loser to the highest degree and we gave up way too much to get him. It seems almost like Layden is back in the Garden!

  • LP @ThisisEther

exactly! Bulls fans, i love the coming out of Jimmy Butler, but I’m not ultra convinced he’s ready to produce like this in the primetime lights……Monta will get the job done….for a low price, of course, nothing over 7 mill

  • LP @ThisisEther

we need more scoring, butler is good but I’d rather have monta if we can get him for a good price….can’t put all our eggs in the Jimmy Butler basket, even tho he showed some great strides this past playoffs..

  • Stepfan Raiford

I’m starting to think that the Knicks organization has been playing way to much #2k online association mode. Monta n melo would only work in 2k.

  • OfftheWall87

Defense would suffer with him and Rose on the floor at the same time. Too small of a backcourt and neither one is good on the defensive end of the floor. Regardless of how great D-Rose is offensively, everything they get starts with their defense. If anything, Monta would have to come off the bench which I’m sure he doesn’t want to do. Butler has to be in the starting lineup at the 2.

  • Mike Gilbert

we can’t sign him for even close to 7 mil. But having Monta on a team with Derrick Rose doesn’t make any sense. They both need the ball to be effective. Not to mention Monta’s lack of defense…

  • LP @ThisisEther

bench production…just saying, they should see if monta would like to take less money and have a crazy “6th man of the year” bench role…He’s walking away from 11 mill, so money isn’t a motivator..he wants to win…

I’m not suggesting “Hey, lets play monta and rose together full time and try to win”….

  • Basketball_iQ

How bout he doesn’t go there at all… The media once again trying to boost up their favorite / hometown team out of mediocrity
Hey Dan powers,,,, pull some strings

  • Basketball_iQ

So what. Jimmy Blah Blah won’t cut it. That’s why it says the Bulls home skillet. Bc they need ‘em. Jimmy will make a terrific backup.

  • danpowers

lol i got no influence there. but im gratefull that it is that way. otherwise i wouldve never gotten to bball in that basketball desert called germany, if the world media’s capital wouldnt have a basketball team.

funny thing is i saw pat ewing and the knicks back then in the 90s before i even knew who michael jordan was.

  • pposse

and when exactly was d rose considered ‘not good’ on defense? D Rose is also the spear of that defense don’t get it misconstrued.

  • Isabel Herron

as Josephine implied I can’t believe that anyone able to get paid $5729 in a few weeks on the internet. did you see this web link www.KEP2.com

  • Max

    lol

  • Mike Gilbert

Monta starting on the Bulls would be a disaster. Obviously he plays bad D, but beyond that, he needs the ball to be effective on offense. Playing him next to Rose would make no sense. He could work as a 6th man I guess but we would only be able to offer him like 10 mil over 3 years so it would be stupid of him to sign

  • OfftheWall87

Dude, the Bulls aren’t perfect and neither is their best player. Get over it. Hinrich is a better defensive player than he is right now. The spear of that defense? What does that mean exactly? Because the anchor is Noah. Noah, Deng and Butler are their best defenders. Boozer and Rose are the weak spots in their starting lineup defensively. Their best lineup defensively is Hinrich, Butler, Deng, Gibson and Noah. You should watch them play once in a while. The next season begins in October. I think you’ll enjoy it. It’s not about getting it misconstrued. It’s about actually watching them play.

  • don

my man monta needs to be on a contending team. DO it. some team, just do it already. monta, behave!

  • pposse

which you clearly don’t do. Its all about getting it miscontrued cause that it exactly what you are doing and then make some weak excuse like you watch the Bulls more than me. That’s pathetic. If Rose is so bad defensively, then tell me genius why no elite pg actually outshines him when they play against him? Or how about you explain why its tough for those guys to even get their averages? Hinrich is average defensively, he hustles which makes him better than most, but he doesn’t have the anticipation skills like Rose, nor does he make other pg’s second guess themselves the way Rose does and will do come October.

Dont believe me? How about we ask Tom Thibodeau what he thinks about Derrick Rose’s defensive prowess. But don’t take it from him he’s just a Coach of the Year, he’s in charge of that stingy chicago d, hell he might just be the best coach in the L. I didn’t say he was perfect, but he aint a liability on defense the way you want to paint the picture, daring to put D Rose and Boozer in the same sentence when it comes to defense lol that is absurd.

  • OfftheWall87

You don’t watch with an objective eye. It’s obvious. You’re a fanboy. You were the only fool here the day after the Heat won talking about what LeBron didn’t do and what everyone else did. This is who you are in summary…Thibs is the best coach. The Bulls are perfect and the best team. LeBron isn’t Michael Jordan. The Heat are stupid. Ray Allen was the MVP of the Finals. Michael Jordan is the only legendary player and every player after him is stupid because they’re not him. That’s who you are. Everyone knows what to expect from you. Utter ridiculousness. Rose outscores his matchup most of the time, but he doesn’t exactly lock them down. He outplays them offensively, but he doesn’t stop or contain anyone. Every once in a while he makes an athletic play defensively. He’s fortunate to have Noah behind him and he’s fortunate to play on a great defensive team and be a great offensive player because most people won’t talk about his mediocre defense because of that.

  • LP @ThisisEther

I’m glad you said this…. People love to imply Rose is a defensive liability…. Crazy….

  • ATL dynamite

What are the Knicks competing for? The starting five with the least defense in the history of the game?

  • danpowers

they would set many records such as points allowed, fewest assists per game, opponent fg% and attempted field goals.

  • pposse

he’s not mediocre defensively plain and simple and you might want to retract your statement where you put his defensive skills in the same category of Boozers, that is simply untrue. Thibs has said on multiple occassions that the defense starts with his PG, yeah sure Noah makes a lot of guys look good, but its Rose’s job to funnel the opposing pg and the ball to Noah which he does just fine at. And he doesn’t contain some of the greats?! just check out some of the numbers at the end of the 2011 season he had. Or how about after Andre Miller did some work and LA called out D rose’s defense you check how Chris Paul and Deron Williams faired the next two bball games against him and the Bulls.

In your summary of I, i have never stated anything you wildly claim! not once!

  • Sardo Numspa

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha….. Melo, Bargniani AND Ellis? That team is dreadful… who are you kidding? No one would be scared to play you.. Every team in the league will be able to say “This is the Knicks in Madison square garden… and we can beat them.. if we just play ‘d’ we got this… ”
JVG will be rolling over in his grave!

  • Dev

Im just poetical like that lol
