Rockets Reportedly Keeping Jeremy Lin, Omer Asik Because Dwight Howard and James Harden Want Them To

After the Rockets signed Dwight Howard, word was Omer Asik wanted out, and many speculated Jeremy Lin might be moved as well to create cap space for another piece or two. But that’s not happening, and according to the Houston Chronicle, it’s because Dwight and James Harden are demanding those two guys stay in H-Town: “General manager Daryl Morey insists he is not looking to deal guard Jeremy Lin and center Omer Asik in the wake of signing Dwight Howard. He has cited Lin’s ability as an attacking guard as a good fit with Howard. He has talked about the value of Asik’s defense off the bench. On Saturday, he added another reason. ‘The reality is James (Harden) and Dwight (Howard) want to play with Jeremy and Omer,’ Morey said. ‘I’ve been kicked down to assistant GM. They’re going to be here. With Howard to supplant Asik as starting center, Morey was more specific about what Asik can bring. ‘When we didn’t have Omer out there last year, we (stunk),’ Morey said. ‘I mean, we were terrible. That was where we lost games. When we had Omer out there, we were a top-10 defensive team. Now we have a defensive player of the year and Omer. That position is so important if you’re going to have a solid defense. Now we have two of the best in the league. I’m very excited.’”

Morey’s a smart guy. He knows the value Lin and Asik, as he signed them. This could be a bit of a P.R. move to placate those two – a showing of support from the two big names, backed by the GM. Having Asik and Howard together, with McHale’s coaching, could be really dangerous for other teams. As a fan of the game, I’d love to them do some real defensive damage. Hopefully Asik buys in, and Lin keep improving.

translation: we haven’t found a deal that we really like yet. but when we do, THEY GONE!

  • shockexchange

In the Shock Exchange’s opinion, if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it. You need to step your game up fiyah.

  • spit hot fiyah

not broke? they haven’t even tried it yet, they don’t know if it works.

if they plan on playing both asik and howard together they will have to change their entire offensive philosophy. if they plan on having asik play back up minutes, then they are just waiting a bunch of money, his trade value is high and they could get a player that fits better into their system.
Lin is alright, but owed too much money, they will move him if they find someone interested. they have beverly and canaan locked up the next few years for super cheap.

The Rockets should go big with Asik and Rent-A-Center. You can never have too many bigs. They are paying these guys a lot of money and now is the time for them to earn it. They will also have the flexibility to play small ball or go big when necessary. The Rockets need to forget the deal making and trying to be cute and go out and slap the ___ out of teams.

I feel for Omer, he deserves to be an NBA starter, much the same as Gortat before he got out of Orlando.

  • ChosenOne

I’m calling it now, they won’t get past the first round.

  • The Seed

If they keep them they will not be good for a while. Lin is very overrated, can he dribble with his left hand yet and Omer is good, but bringing him off the bench is wasting his career.

    NICE.

i feel so bad for Lin…..

lin and asik are great teammates. you cannot calculate chemistry by stats. I think Howard and Harden will love playing with these 2 guys. I would start Asik at 4 and put either howard or asik on bench when they play small ball in the playoffs. Terrence Jones as a spread 4. Houston offense will be very much Harden and Lin drive and kick anyway, don’t really need a spread 4 from the start

  • grgeblck

    Why is that?

  • grgeblck

We’ll see how far they can stretch.

They have 2 players that will be Top 2 at their positions, a first round exit is unlikely… they gave okc a sweat this year

  • LP @ThisisEther

    Asik at the 4…

But to be fair OKC was missing their second best player.

I think the only “deal” that was attractive to Houston was to bring Josh Smith over to play with Dwight. But once Smith signed with Detroit, nothing out there was better than simply keeping Lin and Asik. But to be honest, I think Lin is a good fit with Dwight anyways. Lin had good chemistry with Tyson Chandler and tried to re-enact it with Asik cept Asik could never catch the mfn ball. Dwight should flourish if he embraces the PnR again.

Russ wasn’t gone the whole series….well, that was since game 2…but still…

    That’s a big difference lol

I keep laughing that people are acting like that’s even close to a possibility.

  • King David

it was suppoesed to be his team and got screwed over by the additon of Harden n now Howard means even less touches just like when Melo came back from injury

James Harden gets all the credit for doing exactly what Jeremy Lin did for the Knicks. Suddenly Lin is ranked below every point guard in the league, and replaced in the rotation by Toney Douglas and Patrick Beverley because fouling opposing guards at halfcourt is “playing good defense”. Nevermind that Lin was coming back from knee surgery and his 3-point shot was off for a few weeks, and his lateral quickness was not 100%. But apparently Rockets fans are made to believe that this is his ceiling and not an injury issue. Now Morey wants to trade Jeremy but …. surprise, the rest of the NBA now sees him as worthless, just because the Rockets do.
The Unwelcome sign was already up in H-Town as soon as Lin was signed.
