Dwight Howard Willing to Be a Power Forward Next to Omer Asik

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey recently said that the team will experiment with Omer Asik at center, with Dwight Howard playing the power forward spot.

During a promotional visit in Taiwan, Howard told the press that he’s happy to try out a new position in H-Town.

Per Focus Taiwan (via EOB):

“There is no need to adjust. I have been playing basketball for my whole life. I started it up playing a point guard,” the NBA star told reporters at a press conference to welcome his third visit to Taiwan.

“I think it can make our team tougher. We need [me] being as a power forward some games and Asik being a center. We will have a big lineup, and it will be tough for teams to truly score,” the 27-year-old center said. “You have two guys to play great defense in the paint. So I think it is positive, and it is no conflict,” he added.

Omer Asik was said to be unhappy when the Rockets acquired Howard this summer, but the team appears determined to keep and accommodate him going forward.

After refusing to accept his role in Los Angeles before bolting as a free agent, Dwight Howard seems like a much happier (and cooperative) player now that he’s a Rocket.

Lakers fans will now proceed to leap off a cliff.

“Lakers fans will now proceed to leap off a cliff.” LOL *Rolls out a carpet*

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

“hey James, i know you love eurostepping, and getting to the FT Line, but we want to play 2 guys at the same time who can’t hit the ocean unless they are literally above it.”

  • Sergio

Hahahaha… Also, Dwight, good luck guarding small ball 4s like Lebron and Carmelo.

  • LakeShow

What? He can say all he wants, but he can’t play PF…

  • shockexchange

The twin towers worked in Golden State (Clifford Ray / George Johnson), Houston (Hakeem / Sampson), San Antonio (Robinson / Timmy) and LA (Pau Gasol / Andrew Bynum at the same ____ time). In the Shock Exchange’s opinion, Rent-A-Center must learn to play in space for it to work in H-Town.

  • LakeShow

Best of luck if this is true Houston…

  • RKJ92

It was a joke Lake! I don’t have any faith in Dwight playing the pf with Asik at center either; until he starts to prove us wrong with his play, because we both know words mean nothing my friend.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

with the exception of Ray/Johnson (i just don’t know enough about them), all of those other “twin tower” combinations included at least one player who is a threat from 15 ft…….neither of these guys from Houston are even a threat from 10.

  • RKJ92

    6 feet* lolol

  • LakeShow

It would work with allot of big guys in the L. But they have the worse combo in Asik and Howard to be in the game in tandem and benefit from it.

It’s going to be fun watching Houston this year that’s for sure.

I think Harden wants this to be HIS team and he won’t like Dwight b*tching about everything all the time and being lauded as the teams best player. Their could be fire works.

Plus Jeremy Lin has changed bro.

  • bike

Dwight used to play point guard? That explains everything.

  • shockexchange

A de facto co-sign for the Shock Exchange —–> “In the Shock Exchange’s opinion, Rent-A-Center must learn to play in space for it to work in H-Town.”

To be frank, it’s time that Rent-A-Center put his big boy pants make this twin towers thingy work. He is not much more skilled today than when he left high school. SE would go on about how “Bobby Knight would have helped him improved his weaknesses” but SE has convinced you of this point already.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehh, i’d say he is considerably more skilled…..but it’s hard to not be considerably more skilled than not skilled at all.
    .
Asik is being traded. idk why anyone believes Houston that they are really going to try this Howard/Asik thing. Asik is due $15 million the season after next. He will not be eating up that much cap space for Houston. That much, I know.

  • shockexchange

Daryl Morey is winning right now. It’s difficult to bet against him. Whatever he chooses to do – twin towers or trade Asik – will prolly work. Morey appears to have a horseshoe up his rear end right now.

  • spit hot fiyah

“There is no need to adjust. I have been playing basketball for my whole life. I started it up playing a point guard,”

    make it happen McHale

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

lol now I actually want to see it happen.

  • Busta213

I thought the poison pill wouldve only applied to the Bulls and Asiks cost against the cap for Houston is split evenly over the length of his contract.

  • johng_3

This is going to be the worst FT shooting big men tandem in league history

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah my bad thanks for correcting that, i didn’t mean against the cap. i just meant Asik eating up $15 million dollars, while being a guy you can’t use like a max player is not going to happen in Houston.

  • RKJ92

Morey has done an amazing job Kudos to him, Dwight will only b*tch if Houston isn’t a 50 win team, and Dwight has already voiced his opinion on being 2nd fiddle to Harden (even though we know Dwight is the better player). The only fireworks I see happening would be caused to Omer, and Dwight not being able to gel, other then that this team is fine and will be fun to watch! question though Lake what are you implying by Jeremy Lin changing?

  • LakeShow

It’s that dumb skit video JL made that I was referring to.

Harden was better last year than Dwight was.

We’ll see who their best player is.

  • danpowers
  • spit hot fiyah

how do you feel about asik’s contract. when he signed it a lot of people thought that it was too big. and the bulls didn’t want to match (the structure of it being a big reason why) but instead they ended over paying gibson while not really competing with anyone for his services right?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well, they didn’t overpay for Gibson. Let’s make sure that’s stated. Especially for what they do.
    .
    With that being said,
they screwed the pooch by not matching for Asik. His contract is more than fair, and he is easily tradeable. It would have been better to match on Asik, and amnesty Boozer….but Jerry Reinsdorf problems…

  • RKJ92

lol sorry I never saw the video till now.. ya it was dumb. I agree that Harden was better then Dwight last year but you have to take into account that he was playing injured, in a bunk offense with 3 different coaches. In the right system, and with a stable team we both know Dwight Howard is in another world compared to Harden. We will just have to see if he plays the way he is truly capable of this season. I couldn’t tell you who the better one would be this season between them though.. I just know Dwight in Orlando adds 16 wins to your team automatically. Harden right now adds about 8 wins.

  • RKJ92

    haha wow..

  • LakeShow

In an offense he chose to be bunk…
    That’s my point.

Howard has to prove he isn’t a team killer. He was in his last two seasons.

  • burnt_chicken

Houston has hundreds of perimeter shooters orbiting around these guys–and even if their offence suffers a good bit, their interior D (at least) and rebounding is going to be off the charts. Happily count myself among the few who think this can work.

  • danpowers

well, he had a team on his shoulders all those years before and almost single handedly carried it to the finals. he was a “team killer” because he wanted out of orlando and didnt fit into la in the first place. he wants to play for houston so there is not really anything indicating that he would pull this retarded dwightmare sh*t again in houston.

  • RKJ92

He simply cannot be a team killer though; he’s already taken a garbage Orlando squad to the finals, the ONLY reason his last 2 seasons were bad was A) he didn’t want to be in Orlando his last season there. and B) he had a horrible coach in Mike Brown, and Mike D’Antoni, with problems in the teams chemistry.

  • RKJ92

He DID carry the Magic to the finals, and lost to the Lakers.

  • RKJ92

Secondly look at his playoff stats when he actually carried Orlando to the finals they are insane.. 20.3ppg (.634 TS%), 15.3rpg (4.3 of which were offensive boards), 2apg, 1spg, 2.6bpg
    -
Even his last stint with Orlando in the playoffs he was averaging 27-16-1-1-2, crazyyyy..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well, he was unhealthy. i’d say that is reason #1

  • RKJ92

Ya I didn’t mention it because I said it already in the post above this one, that would be the main reason though yes!

  • LakeShow

Those #’s are not that crazy to me. They are very nice numbers, but he gets over half of them by being set up.
Dwight is the ultimate pick and roll/defensive center. He should let Harden be the Star and he SHOULD do all the dirty work. Instead he wants to be tossed the ball on the post where he is at his least efficient and highest TO probability.

    Amar’e Stoudemire averaged 30, 11, and 2 on 62% TS% in the 2004-2005 playoffs over 15 games….

Things could get a little sticky down in Houston.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i think you two are arguing different points entirely. RK is saying, Dwight will still be the best player on the Rockets if he just does what he did in Orlando…..
    .
You are talking about a #1 option. Which is patently different.

  • 23

Started up? As in 5 years old? Oh yeah that versatility from his peewee league is finally paying off!

  • 23

Used to as in, over 20 years ago lol

  • Junior Taylor

Ehh….I beg to differ. One of the main requirements (and the only one, I think) for a twin-tower like PF/C combo to work is that one of them has to be able to hit 15-footers on a consistent basis. Neither one (Howard or Asik) has even shown the slightest ability to do so. Trade Asik, start TJones at 4 (or get a stretch 4) and have Howard at the 5.

  • LakeShow

    nbk’s post below lol…

“all of those other “twin tower” combinations included at least one player who is a threat from 15 ft…….neither of these guys from Houston are even a threat from 10.”

  • robb

He’s willing to be a power forward because he knows Asik will be traded and he won’t have to do it.

  • RKJ92

Your forgetting about the defense man lol, his stats are allstar numbers; and as soon as you add his phenominal defense into the equation he makes you drool..

  • CHRIS

although neither of them can knock down the 10-15 footer, they do have many other shooters that can potentially help spread the floor a bit. It will definitely be tough, but I’m interested to see how this works out/how long it lasts

  • Blarmac

So much for legendary center status. legendary centers don’t give up their 5 spot that easily.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol still should have included it after saying ONLY in caps tho

  • Daryl Morey
  • RKJ92

    Lol nbk your irreplaceble <3

  • micah

Asik can shoot from outside. See the clips before making any judgmental comments.

  • Busta213

Its not like he’ll never play center again. Say Asik backs Dwight up, that’s 13mpg approx. They would only need to be on the floor together around 15 mins for Asik to get a decent run out.

  • Busta213

Why not? The way I see it, if you can defend a position, you can play it.

  • Ugh

Yes, of all the things that make a legendary centre legendary, “not giving up the 5 that easily” is at the very top.

  • danpowers

    lol

  • iman001

Going to be the same problem in Houston as LA. Howard will want more touches in the low post, but doesn’t have a polished post up game, even Hakeem said so.

  • http://reverbnation.com/ends1 ENDS

I think Dwight is Naturally a 4. We experimented in 08 when we had Darko. Good Move in my opinion

  • ctk

Asik for DLee should happen …it helps both teams

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

man….from 3-9 feet, Omer Asik shot 27% on over 1 attempt a game. And he attempted 0.2 shots from 9+ feet from the hoop on the season.
    .
LMAO! maybe you should do some research before you make such a stupid comment.

  • Evan Boland

Dwight is the better player? Pulleasseeee. 2 years ago, maybe.

  • Evan Boland

In another world compared to Harden? I’ll admit, if he can play like he did in Orlando, he is the best player on the team. But I still doubt he can recapture his former greatness.

  • LakeShow

    Yeah, nice idea…

It would leave the Warriors PF-less, but that’s not a big deal when you have two top 10 centers and a bunch of quality strong small forwards.

  • LakeShow

    How?

What about 6’11 260lb … 20-12-3 on 55%Fg’s and ZERO capability to shoot a jump shot, shout “power forward” to you??

  • LakeShow

I can’t understand a word anyone says in this video.

  • http://reverbnation.com/ends1 ENDS

Shawn Kemp had a jump shot? PJ Brown Had a jump shot. that whole mold is the new millennium PF, traditionally a four is exactly what D12 would have been. He didnt start as a Center LakeShow we had Kelvin Cato at the 5

  • LakeShow

It’s too packed in the lane with the both them needing a bucket within 5 feet of the hoop IMO.

  • LakeShow

Shawn Kemp didn’t want the ball on the low post. He understood he was a pick and roll PF.

PJ Brown is not a player you want a player to strive to be like so I’ll just ignore that.

He had Frank Brickowski and Ervin Johnson for centers. Both could shoot the J. And this was during a time when teams weren’t going small ball like they do today… Instead they were all trying to do the twin towers thing.

He didn’t start as a center, because he was mush more slim and didn’t display the marking that we see today of him being a great center. He also was basically a center playing PF. He was doing center things from the PF position.

  • Chris LeDon
  • CKLOH

    Rockets’ Playbook:

    Option #1: Implode

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

in ’97 Kemp shot a three every other game…..he definitely had a jumper. Not a real dangerous one, but he definitely had to be guarded everywhere from 16 feet and in.

  • The Philosopher

LakeShow with the blast from the past…

  • ctk

U know they trying to play Barnes at the 4 n just use Spieghts to eat up the last 15-20mins left over …Asik make it to where u don’t lose your whole season once Bogut gets hurts

  • LakeShow

    The man, the legend…

  • LakeShow

Yeah, they really could use one legit PF though…

  • http://reverbnation.com/ends1 ENDS

I just don’t think Dwight’s offensive game is ever gonna be as smooth as the great centers. Hell I would’ve taken Earvin Johnson or Sam Perkins…naw im just messin, but in all seriousness PJ Brown was a work horce on both Miami and New Orleans/Charlotte

  • http://reverbnation.com/ends1 ENDS

He Accomplished more than Reignman did, keep it real.

  • The Fury

Hey I also have THIS card!! lol.

  • leclec

Still Make him as a CENTER That’s the best position for him

  • bill

    The Clang Gang

  • billy boooob

leap off a cliff in excitement? i think so. its quite clear our lakers need to rebuild but are putting it off because of the attempt to win a championship for kobe. as a fan, i think its possible :D

  • Wilt Chamberlain

    Lol, I would crush Dwight.

  • Cortez Mack

    Ervin could shoot?

  • LakeShow

Yeah. He wasn’t a big outside shooter, but he nailed some outside shots when asked to. Look up some highlights you will see at least a few silky jumpers.

  • Jasko k

    Warriors not doing that
