Paul Pierce Says Time for Brooklyn Nets to Run New York

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

As his career-long war against the New York Knicks wages on, Paul Pierce has invaded their city and says it’s time for his new squad to take over.

Pierce thinks the Knicks’ time has come and gone, and that the Brooklyn Nets are the new sheriffs in town.

“I think the hate [for the Knicks] has grown a little. Everybody knows how much I disliked the Knicks when I was with the Celtics, but I think it’s grown to another level,” Pierce said on Thursday. “I think it’s time for the Nets to start running this city.”

Pierce later told reporters at a Sprint H-O-R-S-E event in Manhattan: “The only thing that separates the two teams is a bridge. And both of them are in the same division and both of them are considered contenders. You can’t help but say this is probably gonna be the best rivalry in sports next year.” The Nets and Knicks will meet four times in 2013-14. The first game of their regular-season series will be Dec. 5 at Barclays Center.

Pierce’s claim that this will become the best rivalry in all of sports may be overstating things, but with JR Smith crowing that the Knicks remain New York’s “marquee” basketball team (despite their rapidly closing window), both sides will provide plenty of entertainment trying to win this argument.

Paul Pierce thinks the 2013-14 Brooklyn Nets are the most talented team he’s ever been a part of (it’s certainly the most expensive.) They must first reign supreme in Gotham.

    They may run the East

  • JibbsIsBallin

Blah blah blah. There are two very good teams that people seem to forget about in the East that are already running things and they go by Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers. Nets and the Knicks will be a good rivalry, but nothing like watching the Heat and Pacers go at it.

    melo going to la

  • shockexchange

The manufactured Nets/Knicks beef reminds SE of the LL CoolJ / Kool Moe Dee beef back in the day. Both guys going back in forth, feigning disdain, getting rap fans all into a tizzy. Meanwhille, LL and Kool Moe Dee laughing all the way to the bank.

  • LLC#12

Nets vs Knicks isn’t really much of a contest, and calling it the best rivalry in sports is an even bolder claim than something Mario “Top 10″ Chalmers would say.

  • JibbsIsBallin

I thought Chalmers claimed to be Top 5?

“And both of them are in the same division and both of them are considered contenders.”
The Knicks are consideredserious title contenders?

  • Max

    More like pretenders.

  • pposse

*the Knicks are NOT championship contenders

  • spit hot fiyah

the brooklyn nets will participate in the new york marathon?

  • Melo

I don’t care if Brookyn wins back to back ships. New York will always be the Knicks town. The only trouble is, this Nets team puts more pressure on the NYK front office to continue to dump picks for agin vets to try and “win now”, or at least create the illusion for us knicks fans that they’re trying to. We need to buil from scratch if the current squad doesn’t work out, which, when you look at Indiana, Chicago, Miami and, of course Brooklyn, it probably will not. It’s going to be a while, Knicks fans.

  • Scooby Doo

Yes they are contenders. If Melo is “in the best shape of his life” like he claims, if shumpert is completely healthy, if JR is completely healthy, if MWP (old), Amare (Injury prone) and K Mart can stay healthy and still be productive, and if tyson chandler can get back to his 2011 form the Knicks will be better than everyone thinks. And who knows what we’ll get from rook Tim Hardaway Jr. and young big Jeremy Tyler, who at one point was a top high school player in the country as a junior. If all goes well (albeit that being a very big “if”) the Knicks will surprise people this season.

  • Madubbs

Honestly this hype between both teams are being forced, but the knicks are not doubt not contenders

  • Caboose

And if aliens decide they need the talents of everyone on the Heat, Pacers, Bulls, Spurs, Thunder, Clippers, Rockets, Warriors, and Grizzlies. Then the Knicks will REALLY surprise people.

  • LakeShow

They’ll still toy with teams during the regular season.

  • LakeShow

If Deron Williams is back to 2007-2008 D-Will….
Net’s will be pushing for the top spot in East with the Bulls, Pacers, and Heat.

This year the East offers a good verity of competitiveness.

  • straight cake

Brooklyn Nets need to stay healthy for the regular season or they might end up like the disaster which was the 2012-2013 Lakers. Theoretically Brooklyn are contenders but lets see how it plays out first.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

In order to be a contender I think the amount of “ifs” should be drastically low if not any. Like take this scenario using my beloved Lakers:
    1. If Kobe can come back 100% healthy from an achilles injury
    2. If Chris Kaman can play like the All Star he was with the Clippers
    3. If Steve Nash can keep his man in front of him
    4. If D’Antoni can somehow grasp the concept of effective defensive strategy and realize that having Pau in the post using his exceptional post skills rather than in the corner for 3.
The Lakers will surprise people this season.

  • shockexchange

At a minimum, with KG and Lopez, the Nets should be one of the best, if not the best, defensive team in the L. Winning starts with defense and rebounding.

  • shockexchange

If SE was a lot taller, a lot richer, and didn’t run his mouth so much, he could have dated Lola Falana and Pam Grier at the same ____ time. Webster’s dictionary would call that an “oxymoron.”

  • LakeShow

Nice name haha. Love me some Scooby Doo.

  • LakeShow

100% agree. I said that the other day.
Their front court is probably better than the Pacers defensively, and most likely offensively too.
Unless Hibbert takes that next big step, and West doesn’t lose one. Then the Pacers are still slightly better – front court wise.

I know a lot of fans love PP’s “old school” mentality. But Damn I am always severely annoyed with his cockiness. With all the talking he does you would think he is Michael Jordan or Kobe. I guess I’m a rare fan that would rather have players shut up and play. Let your game do the talking. Honestly who cares about who’s team “runs” NY? Why does PP care so much about that? He has never even played a single game representing NY. Why feel the need to make something out of nothing? Just focus on playing.

  • shockexchange

The Nets also have size in Kirilenko and Blatche. They are scary good on paper.

  • LakeShow

3 years ago Prokorov made the claim of a championship within 5 years. He’s given himself some of the best tools to get one in that time frame.

  • shockexchange

Yeah, but he needed help from the Celtics to get there. Who could have ever imagined Boston would have traded Pierce and Garnett … to a team within their own division, no less. Stranger than fiction.

  • Cartel

    Great analogy…

  • LakeShow

Doesn’t matter. Everyone needs help is what you need to realize.

  • shockexchange

LakeShow with the subliminal! You’ve just outshocked the Shock Exchange.

Some people are “the help,” but they just don’t realize it.

  • LakeShow

Like who? What scenario would you be referring to? JR Smith in NY?

  • shockexchange

Oh Lake, just when SE thought was gonna be a bonding moment you had to go there. *Welp*

  • Tony Taylor

How old is the shockexchange exactly ?

  • shockexchange

Old enough to hand out that fiddy.

  • Lenin-Gil Phillips

Lakers bench last year was terrible tho and basically they were only a 5 deep roster while the Nets this year are 8-10 deep, with AK47, Blatche, Jet, Livingston, Mirza, & Reggie.

  • grgeblck

Your nick makes me think that you are Mike.

  • Yep

shock mah daaaaaaaaaaaaaaawg…you mah dog mah dawwwwg

  • Evan Boland

    Nah they’re not contenders.

  • straight cake

But if Pierce and Garnett dont stay healthy you guys are just another playoff team.

  • mowka

Sorry but Paul Pierce will never run New York, never

  • Busta213

Its the off-season. Players talking smack is all we have right now!
    Keep it coming!

  • 13#

    so you 50

  • Basketball_iQ

Everyone based LA’s potential off of two players being present, Kobeand dwight, this Brooklyn team has a starting 5 and bench players success will be based off of.

  • Basketball_iQ

Brooklyn is probably gonna run the knicks out of town this season,,, the knick faithful take losing SO WELL:-)

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Kool Moe Dee won that match-up tho.

  • shockexchange

“You say I can only rock rhymes … only rock crowds, but can’t rock records? How ya like me now?” Moe Dee went in. It’s an age old debate over art – artistic merit vs. sales. Art has to sell for the artist to survive. People today are under the illusion that the artist who sells the most is the hottest. Hip hop fans used to be very discerning and very fickle. Today sales are driven by PR and radio play because fans have turned into sheep.

As corporations have taken over and tried to tell people what’s hot, old heads see the trend as the beginning of the end for hip hop as an art form.

  • ActionBronson

The Seahawks-49ers is going to be the “best rivalry in sports” for the foreseeable future. Knicks-Nets is nowhere close.

  • straight cake

True but they have to stay healthy to live up to their potential.

  • Basketball Coach

not that excited about Brooklyn, but they do have a good line up and role players.

  • JL

number 3 and 4 aren’t even ifs, more like impossibilities. All the Lakers needed to do was hire D’Antoni as the offensive coordinator (not that I think he’s the right man for the job), and Mike Brown kept working the defense, and they would have been way better off.

You feel me? When Nets, Clipps and Pacers are the penultimate teams I gotta say I like our chances v the Heat for seven games any day of the week.

  • Ugh

How can you be discerning and fickle at the same time?

  • shockexchange

That’s a good question, but that’s how rap fans have traditionally been. They have been extremely shrewd and no matter how much talent a rapper had, after three albums fans were on to the next.
