Amar’e Stoudemire Secretly Had Another Knee Surgery

by Marcel Mutoni / @ marcel_mutoni

According to the NY Daily News, Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire underwent a hush-hush knee operation this summer.

New York didn’t announce that their injury-plagued star had a third surgery in the last 12 months (which a source called a “clean up”) on one of his troubled knees:

However, the secrecy surrounding Stoudemire’s latest health issue could be an indication that the club is not optimistic that they can rely on the veteran power forward. Stoudemire appeared in just 29 games last season and had debridement surgeries on both of his knees, the right knee in October and the left in March. Stoudemire was on a strict minutes restriction last season and both head coach Mike Woodson and former general manager Glen Grunwald said last May that the plan going forward was to reduce the playing time of the fragile $100 million forward.

Stoudemire’s work ethic is second to none and in the past he has worked vigorously to get himself back on the court. However, the Knicks management is all but resigned to the fact that Stoudemire will never return to his All Star form on a consistent basis. Stoudemire is entering the fourth season of a five-year, $100 million contract. Because of his previous knee problems, Stoudemire’s contract is not insured. Stoudemire’s former team, the Phoenix Suns, were advised by their medical staff that Stoudemire would be physically limited in the third year of his contract.

Health will be the key to the Knicks’ season, with STAT’s status hanging ominously over everything.

Stoudemire hasn’t scrimmaged alongside his teammates at all in informal offseason workouts, and according to point guard Raymond Felton, Amar’e will be very limited during training camp.

The New York Knicks may not necessarily be better in 2013-’14 than they were last season (let alone pose a threat as title contenders), but as always, they will be fascinating.

Are prosthetic legs/knees allowed in the leauge?
Sad news for Amare and the New York Knicker boxers.

  • patrick

i think there mite be a correlation between surgeries and decrease athleticism..i predict amare will have his worst year yet unfortunately

  • 360

Man it just never ends with this guy

  • spit hot fiyah

    his career

  • i_ball

Stoudemire’s former team, the Phoenix Suns, were advised by their medical staff that Stoudemire would be physically limited in the third year of his contract.

Those guys know they are talking about.

  • Dfrance

Injuries are a part of the game, but I feel bad for Stat. He seems like a genuinely good guy and he’s just been dealt a sh1tty hand health wise. Not to mention Melo coming in and stealing all his thunder in NY.

  • http://h2hoops.wordpress.com/ Habeeba Husain

    Injuries stink.

  • swag

why doesn’t he have what kobe had on his knees?

  • bike

    He’s done.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

because it’s an entirely different problem

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

I don’t think stoudamire really played for knicks and this may be something positive in disguise for the knicks.

    A line up of
Felton, Iman, Melo, Bargani, Chandler suits Melo’s style of play. While Melo plays the post. Bargani can spot up and shoot.

It’d be nice if stoudamire could back up chandler at the 5.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

so i guess that 65 game season people “expect” out of him is out the window

  • http://h2hoops.wordpress.com/ Habeeba Husain

Agreed, but I feel bad for the guy.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

No. If he can play back up center for a good 20 minutes a game I think he can last total 65 games in 82 season.

How would the knicks do if Lebron was traded for Carmelo? Do you think Knicks would be a championship team? What if Durant was traded for carmelo?

  • shockexchange

He can always be the team stylist.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

those trades will never happen, but theoretically if they switched teams.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

I think a Felton, Iman, MWP, Melo, Chandler lineup would suit him more. Melo seems to thrive at the 4 spot because he’s just too quick for opposing 4′s. That small lineup worked for them last year.

  • Tavoris Sinclair

    If Bargnani could still shoot

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i don’t like taking trips to fantasy land very much. but it’s safe to say any competent team with LeBron would be a title contender. Same goes for Durant.

  • RKJ92

Well aren’t you brilliant Patrick! Here’s a pat on the back :)

  • Ben Ireland

Dude, you should contact Phoenix… Their medical staff needs to know this as soon as possible… Maybe you could join it!

  • Wings23

    2+2=4

  • Smits#45

Big man who rely solely on their athleticism are always a risk. Even though I don’t hope so I can see the exact same thing happening to Blake Griffin.

  • Smits#45

I agree with you on Lebron. Not so sure about Durant though. You could be right but I think Lebron has a better all around game where Durant is more of a scorer. You can never stop Durant from scoring but if you manage to contain him I don’t believe Durant has the same ability as Lebron to let his team mates take over the scoring.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    “any competent team”

i never said or implied that Durant and LeBron were equal, or that they had the same strengths. i just mean, if a team’s management is competent, putting the pieces around LeBron/Durant is easy enough to be a contender no matter who you are.

  • Smits#45

Okay, I get your point. But can’t any all star make a team a contender when that team put’s the right pieces around him? I get what you’re saying but in that case I think this goes for a lot of other players too.

  • Lenin-Gil Phillips

The Knicks are going to be a total mess this season. Im also starting to think Andrea Bargani isn’t healthy, no press conference yet and now Knicks are not bringing him to the podium in today’s media day. More secrets from Dolan.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehhh, not really? i mean, even Chris Paul who is pretty unanimously the 3rd best player in the league, needs considerable help to make a team a contender. Durant and James pretty much make teams contenders immediately, they just need help to actually be the favorite.

  • danpowers

    §”$%& &/()=(/&%&/()(/&%$§ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Stepfan Raiford

He was playing, dare I say at an MVP candidate level, before Melo got there.

  • Dfrance

It’s true. Him and Felton running pick and roll/pop basketball was fun to watch.

  • Dfrance

I wouldn’t say solely, Amare is a pretty good jump shooter. But when the threat of the drive and explosive dunk is not there, it makes it harder to get the space for the jumper off.

  • bball knowledge

I dont know about “unanimously” for Paul being 3rd best considering you have Rose and Melo somewhere in the top 5, but Lebron is unanmiously the best player in the NBA and 2nd is Durant.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

there is no logical argument that Melo is even close to Chris Paul. the Derrick Rose argument is very very very weak. Chris Paul is pretty much unanimously (among the NBA community) the 3rd best player in the world. Only person people really argue as better is a healthy Dwight Howard. Who I agree about.

  • bball knowledge

I have been on the record saying Amare’s career is over and he should retire and save the Knicks some cap space.

  • Drig

Melo is top 5 player when he actually decides to bang in the paint and cut in instead of launching shots from mid-range ( even though it looks pretty damn good ).

Rose should not be considered for the top 10 until he actually returns to the court and shows he can still play at that elite level he did 2 years ago. Not saying he can’t. Just that I believe Rose is only gonna hit his gear in the latter half of the season. Not enough for a top 5.

  • Drig

Healthy Dwight Howard who DOES NOT pout. Yes.

If a healthy Howard had the acidic mentality he displayed vs the Spurs, he’d be no better than DeMarcus Cousins : ,

  • Drig

It seemed only yesterday when STAT joined NYK and was the toast of the town. Sorry to see him go out like this.

  • jmm

Common sense has to take a place in front office thinking. If you can’t get the contract insured, MAYBE THERE’S A REASON FOR IT.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

MWP needs to come off the bench with JR SMITH. They have no defense in their 2nd unit

    I mean

    2nd unit would be

Timmy Hardway Jr, Jr Smith, MWP, Amare, Cole Aldrich… that’s more balanced then having baragni off the bench

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

That’s not a bad lineup I just feel putting Melo at the 4 is their best recipe for success.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

but whose better NETS or Knicks?

  • bashmo

I don’t understand how people can tout D.Rose as being the best PG in basketball after not playing in an nba basketball game since April 2012. And its even more astonishing because up until he did get injured in 2012, CP3 had the far better individual season statistically and as a whole. Though DRose did whip him in that head to head in LA, CP was the best PG in the NBA right when Rose was injured. And Melo a top 5 player? That is some sort of a joke. At least I hope it is.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Well I mean they haven’t played yet obviously but “paper” wise I’m going to give the edge to the Nets. Elite PG, Allstar SG, two future hall of famers with championship experience, and an allstar center. I’d say they have the edge based off of “paper” scouting.

  • Evan Boland

He definitely ain’t the 3rd best player in the L.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Thanks Evan. Your perspective always adds so much to the discussion

  • bball knowledge

Melo has a scoring title and Rose has an MVP and Paul has neither of those accolades.

  • bball knowledge

Amare stole his own thunder because he couldnt stay healthy.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol, ok? And? Hopefully, given your name, you realize basketball involves more than scoring…and MVP hopefully you realize is not the “best player in the league award”

  • bball knowledge

but its not like Rose forget to play basketball or something so I am pretty sure he will be back to normal. When Jordan left basketball for a while because he was “bored” we never questioned him being a great player when he left or when he came back.

  • Evan Boland

And both have gotten further in the playoffs.

  • Evan Boland

How about the fact that NBAers themselves constantly refer to Kobe as the best in the L? Even though they’re wrong, it say’s something. I don’t hear about CP3′s greatness from his peers. Dude can’t get out of the second round. DRose argument is weak? Go watch them play head-to-head, buddy.

  • Evan Boland

And both have gotten further in the playoffs..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Wanna show me an NBAer calling Kobe the best player in the NBA right now? go ahead, prove yourself.

“I’ve always felt that he’s the best point guard in the NBA.” – LeBron James on Chris Paul

in a poll of all GM’s in 2012, Chris Paul was voted the best PG in the NBA.

in regards to Chris Paul’s availability,

“as the best PG in the NBA, of course we had interest” – Daryl Morey on Chris Paul

    .

    whoop, in a 5 on 5,

  • danpowers

    even seem him play? smh

  • danpowers

with better supporting casts and in rose’s case: in a weaker conference. next.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Derrick Rose didn’t leave cuz he was bored.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

Amare needs to retire and focus on maintain his health. It’d be a tragedy to be limping when he’s older. Avoid pain avoid pain

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Consider my reply an upvote with a 5x multiplier.

  • bball knowledge

Lebron and Chris Paul are best friends so obviously he is going to be biased in his assesment, just like Durant would be biased towards James Harden.

  • bball knowledge

My point was Jordan and Rose had an absence from basketball for more than a season.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

THE POINT IS Rose is coming back from an injury. Not a rest. None of us know if he even can get back to normal, let alone coming back better than he was when he got hurt

  • bball knowledge

The doctors have said he is 100% and the coaching staff has said he has gotten back his explosiveness. Lets see for ourselves on October 29th.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Exactly. We still have to see.

  • Evan Boland

Chris Paul has been the best PG in the L over the last 3-4 years, I agree. But he’s always been challenged, and Derek Rose took that title for a small period of time. CP3 has just been the most consistent. Kobe has done the same thing in the SG position over the last 15 years

Lebron also stated that Derek Rose elevated the position itself. Who cares?

He was the third best player in the L last season. I will give it you what he does on the court for his size is incredible. When healthy he’s top 5 for the last 6-7 seasons. Saying he is unanimously better than Kobe now is still wrong though.

Like I’ve always said, I trust my eyes first, stats second. I’m old school like that. Go watch DRose vs CP3 IN LA the last time they played. It was an awesome game.

  • Boonie K.

Knicks thought they were lucky Amare was healthy the first and second year. They should have just signed him to 4 years with team options. cut him loose and pay 5 mill.

  • Drig

Rose is coming back from an ACL tear. This is a player who’s quickness off the dribble and finishing at the rim are his USPs.

His 3pt shooting looked like it improved for a while before he got injured. All I’m saying is that he needs to prove himself all over again because the league right now at PG position is deep.

It’s gonna take him some time to get back into the thick of things. It’s unfair to him to expect top 5 caliber play from the get go.

IMO : Durant, LBJ, CP3, Dwight, Hibbert

  • Drig

I hope you realize the MVP is as much team record as it is individual brilliance.

Rose has always had the better team. Whenever Paul had a half-decent supporting cast ( 1 year TBH ), he got his team to 2nd in the better conference.

If it weren’t for Kobe getting LA back to the top and him getting shafted twice earlier, Paul would’ve unanimously won the 2008 MVP.

Also, at no point has Rose ever been better than CP3 as a point guard.

  • bball knowledge

Rose has had better defensive teams but similar supporting casts and he is the only shot creator on offense. The Clippers have a deep roster and a top 5 coach so if Paul does not deliver this year I wonder what is going to be the excuse.

  • Drig

    1. CP3 plays in the West where the bottom seeds are MUCH harder to contend with.

    2. CP3 hasn’t had a team comparable to ’10 Bulls so far.

    3. CP3 was the only shot creator at NOH. And he did a MUCH better job than Rose.

    4. I agree, this time, CP3 has gotta deliver the goods.
