Dwight Howard Recruited Marcus Camby to the Houston Rockets

According to new Rockets backup center Marcus Camby, Dwight Howard helped recruit the veteran big man to H-Town this summer. Per the Houston Chronicle: “Camby, a 6-11 center, understood when the Rockets remade themselves into the youngest, least-experienced team in the NBA. But a year later, they have been transformed again, changing enough that Camby, 39, fits the way he had when he was acquired for those 19 games in 2012. ‘Being familiar with the city, this being my home, and being around the guys and the organization for those … games I was here a couple years ago, I felt that I was at the part of my career this was a good opportunity for me,’ Camby said of his return to the Rockets as a free agent this summer. ‘Having a chance to come back home and finish my career here was all pluses for me.’ [...] There was a time Camby, the second pick of the 1996 draft and four-time All-Defensive Team selection, would not have considered signing with a team that had just signed a franchise center. Now, after 17 NBA seasons, he was happy to play behind Howard and share his experiences with the young Rockets. ‘Ten years ago, no,’ Camby said of signing on to a team that just acquired Howard. ‘Now, I just got off the phone with him. He’s a great guy. Even before I signed, when I got my buyout in Toronto, he was one of the guys that was texting and calling me, trying to sell me on Houston. I told him he didn’t have to. I still have a lot to offer to the game, not just playing, but with my mind and all the battles and all the years I’ve been through, being placed in a situation we have a chance of winning with the talent we have on this team with Dwight and of course James (Harden) and Chandler (Parsons) and all the young guys we have.’”

So this recruiting players is a thing now? What happened to those “i want some challenge and not an easy win” guys?

you don’t think guys have been “making calls” since the inception of freeagency ?

Prime Camby is better than Howard anyhoo

  • shockexchange

SE doesn’t remember Camby ever being considered the best center in the L. Anyhoo, Camby is not in his prime so your argument is rather moot.

it might be the way its reported now, i dont know cause media access is so much easier to get to nowadays and everything gets reported. But the way its reported is just bothersome. The media makes it seem like this is what you have to do in order to win, and some of the quotes from players make it seem that way too. At one point Wade and Bron were trying to recruit Derrick Fisher, like i mean c’mon bro! Something is wrong in this world when you need a 35 yr old on your team to win a championship!

Your most definately right, but my perception is that ever since the ‘decision’, recruiting is now a must and has to be done in order to win. Its just a silly notion to me.

what can camby do for DH? He has 0 offensive skills to teach him, he can’t play D at a high level anymore. DH just wants him around as a sparring buddy for a confidence booster or something.

  • shockexchange

Agreed. In the Shock Exchange’s opinion, Camby doesn’t have anything left in the tank. If Rent-A-Center wants to recruit him that’s his business, but he probably shouldn’t be bragging about it.

Lol I just remembered that Elton Brand recruited Baron Davis to join the Clippers and then went off and signed for the 76ers, hahaha

Lots of people here haven’t seen what Camby has to offer. When he was with Houston a couple years ago he was a leader in helping us get into the playoffs. He did a lot during the series too.
