Andrew Wiggins Says Comparisons to LeBron James and Kevin Durant Unfair

Kansas Jayhawks star Andrew Wiggins is supposed to be the next big thing once he makes the jump to the NBA. Wiggins, though, is smartly trying to manage the outsize expectations fans and media have. Per ESPN: “Well, he hasn’t asked for any of it,’ head coach Bill Self said. ‘If you talk to him, he’s humble and a lowkey guy that deflects attention as much as anybody I’ve been around. But when you hear those things, it’s not fair. … He’s just Andrew.’ That’s not entirely true. Wiggins is the top recruit in college basketball since (Kevin) Durant. So it’s natural to point to a current NBA star he resembles. But Wiggins echoed his coach’s sentiment about the comparisons. ‘I’ve got a long way to go before I can be compared to LeBron (James) and Durant,’ Wiggins said. ‘Those are the best players in the world right now and I’m still in college. So I think it’s really unfair to compare me to someone of that caliber. Hopefully one day I can be compared to them, but I think I still have a long way to go before I can be.’”

I don’t know about this dude sometimes. As a Canadian I want him to exceed expectations but this hype is insane.

YEaaa.. people need to chill with the comparisons and just let the kid play.

Good for Wiggins. I thought the LBJ and KD comparisons had also stopped since LBJ is unarguably the best player on the planet and he’s got a couple of rings to show for it. KD might be 2nd best, but there’s a large gap between 1st and 2nd.

people tend to forget these guys are kids, it’s unfair to put so much pressure on them. Let them develop and have fun first.

  • realtalk

this hype is nothing compared to LeBron’s

  • Yep

Is it just me or is it that I don’t think LeBron is that good as everyone states. I’ve been a LeBron fan before ESPN (thanks Slam!), and he is still my favorite player, but I really think that LeBron is either so good that he makes greatness look ordinary (prolly true) or he’s is not that good. Like, you said the gap is huge between Durant and LeBron. My question is how? I know in terms of accolades…but what is stopping people from really putting Durant or Derrick Rose even on that same platform LeBron is in…

I think the reason is that Durant and Rose have flashy games while LeBron might do cool things from time to time but he is not a flashy player. He is simply efficient from his stats to his conserved, non flashy dribbles. His dunks aren’t even flashy. They’re standard 1 handed off one foot dunks that only look cool because he jumps high.

“Wiggins is the top recruit in college basketball since (Kevin) Durant.”

Just want to point out that is false. Since Oden went before Durant in the draft, the above statement has to be false….

  • cbranson05

in todays world, they never let u just play. the hype is more important than the actual games. the hype is where ppl make their money

  • bike

If I were asked to compare Wiggins to anyone it would be McGrady. Still, too much hype. He may not turn out to be the best freshman in his class this coming season. Rates of improvement vary so much with players his age. To be sure, it will be a blast watching this crop of recuits. Can’t wait.

  • @iamMrjump

I like that the kid is humble but in my opinion he isn’t the only stud in this draft

  • spit hot fiyah

u can look at this statement in two ways:

    1: he is very humble

    or

2: he is feeling the pressure

  • @iamMrjump

@4e90b7086afbebde3b873afc8542387a:disqus I agree I feel that depending on the system and coaching their are few kids that have upside. Randle, Parker, Smart, Gordon.

i agree. his game is like Gerald Green with more IQ. no way is he have that scoring pedigree to dominate the next level.but Wayne Selden is a sleeper and I don’t know about James Youngathen

    Jabari Parker is too slow.

Julius randle has it but Cal gotta make him a Chris Webber not Derick Williams.

Shout out the whole Lanketoii MOraDAFauP

Good to see young, humble, hoopers.

It’s interesting though what the KU coaches have been saying about Wiggins lately.
They believe he hasn’t been the best player in the practices or the scrimmages. They even went as far as to say at least 3 other guys were playing better and looked more promising. We’ll have to wait and see I guess…

  • goattree

your logic is false. They are talking about the top player to be recruited to college, not to the NBA. Regardless of Oden being drafted ahead of Durant, Durant was still a bigger recruit for Texas to land.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he was? Texas, after landing Durant was picked to win the NCAA tournament?
    .
nope, but Ohio State was …. after they landed Greg Oden. The already consensus #1 pick in the following draft.

    Biggest hype SINCE Lebron

  • thebossman15

too simplify, you got bored of watching the dude score fastbreak points and partially contested jumpers/tons of unearned free throws/backdoor cuts etc. and you would rather watch guys who are more entertaining and are much more gifted offensively and can actually score off the dribble(against non big men)..and im right there with you homie

  • Chester

Sorry, but when you’re hyped up as the no.1 pick 2 years before you’re eligible for the draft, you’re going to be compared with these guys.

  • AndreAnglais

Comparing Wiggins’ hype to Lebron’s is dumb. The world was unprepared for that level of hype, for that level of exposure. For good or ill, Lebron’s entry into the Association, from pretty much his Junior year of HS, changed how we view basketball prospects. Not just in the way that every “next big thing” is compared to Lebron, but in the way we consume them. We simultaneously blast the media coverage (“let the kid play”) and devour the headlines they provide. In this new reality, the exposure received by Wiggins is appropriate and unavoidable, and it doesn’t if it’s deserved or not; the hype machine is in place, and needs to feed.

  • Caboose

    3. He’s got a smart agent.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

lol bro don’t start a rumor mill now yo uknow the ncaa is all ovrthese young enterpenues tyring to make a lil stacks chedder to survive.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

that’s recently i mean on the cavs he was a differnet player @ThisisEther:disqus

  • therichardkirby

Greg Oden was getting Bill Russell comparisons coming out of high school. He was definitely the most hyped player post-Lebron

  • north

Same reason Sam Bowie went before Jordan though. Big men go higher because they are rarer not better.

So hard to tell right now. I think after a year of college ball we’ll have a better idea. Lots of top HS players who flamed out.
