Carmelo Anthony Wants to Be a Free Agent

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

The New York Knicks’ window of opportunity is rapidly closing, and they may also be on the verge of losing their biggest star.

Carmelo Anthony says he’s looking forward to free agency next summer.

Even though Melo’s desire to be courted by the rest of the NBA doesn’t necessarily mean he’s leaving New York, this is probably not what Knicks fans want to hear on the verge of such a crucial season.

Per the New York Observer:

Anthony is clear he expects to win a title. “I feel like I’m going to get one, this year, next year. I still got a long time in this league,” he says. But even if he doesn’t, Anthony rejects the semantics that one has to win to be a winner. “Barkley, Ewing, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Reggie Miller—you mean to tell me they’re not great? Yeah, a championship validates that. But these guys are great.”

“I want to be a free agent,” Anthony says. “I think everybody in the NBA dreams to be a free agent at least one time in their career. It’s like you have an evaluation period, you know. It’s like if I’m in the gym and I have all the coaches, all the owners, all the GMs come into the gym and just evaluate everything I do. So yes, I want that experience.” Take a breath, Knicks fans. That doesn’t mean he’s leaving. “I came to New York for a reason,” Anthony adds. “I’ve been with you all my life, almost to a fault. I wanted to come here and take on the pressures of playing in New York. So one thing I would tell my fans: If you haven’t heard it from me, then it ain’t true.”

Here’s the thing: under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the New York Knicks can offer Anthony a five-year deal worth about $129 million next summer, while other teams could only sign him to a four-year contract worth around $96 million.

Though it has to be concerning that Anthony wants to test the free agent waters for the first time in his career, Knicks fans can take comfort in that Melo seems happy in Gotham, and envisions the team contending for a title. What happens next, though, is anyone’s guess.

i’d say the phillies will be the next stop..

  • Zabbah

Yeah, he’ll stop for a phillies cheese steak, that’s what.

“Barkley, Ewing, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Reggie Miller—you mean to tell me they’re not great? Yeah, a championship validates that. But these guys are great.” <—– I agree with this sentiment. Melo needs to due what his peers in his draft did, CLICK UP ! Maybe entertaining being the 2nd option or play with a solid Big Man & True PG

    he should sign with BK

  • Stepfan Raiford

I understand him wanting to be courted by other teams, but if he wants to win a title, he’s not going to win one with the Knicks and their roster. But who’s to say if he goes somewhere else (with La la’s approval) that he would win a title?

  • The Mauve Avenger

He’s going to LA. No doubt in my mind

  • RunNGun

To the Rockets! Make it happen, Kupchak!

  • Lloyd

If the Knicks don’t at least make it to the second round, I think he’s leaving. Saying all the right things right now though.

how many stars do you want on the rockets?

  • ctk

This is the Hawks-JoeJohnson situation of 3 years ago …he clearly not worth the max for the entire new deal ..but if u don’t sign him then what?….top 10 players ain’t just walking around here

  • Roger Rogers

James Dolan is to blame for all of this.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

He needs to sign with the Heat. He’s a better scorer than Wade. The Heat need to think long term. There is no loyalty in sports unless you are not a skeptic. Win the rings not the hearts.

  • ScrewT

    It begins.

  • danpowers

oh my, please media, dont make a big deal out of it. prior he said he wont leave the knicks and after this free agency statement he also said “me leaving never crossed my mind. free agency is just an experience i’d like to experience”. looks to me like he is just putting some extra pressure on the knicks front office to improve his supporting cast significantly.

more importantly: what speaks for the knicks anyway is money. anybody out there seriously expecting THIS GUY to accept a paycut for the sake of team success? i cant imagine that. everything around this story points the knicks’ way.

  • spit hot fiyah

he is not worth 5 years 129 million at this point. great offensive player yes, but where is he taking you? if they give him that deal they basically gambling that another big name will sign there just because it’s NY. and then fill out the rest of the roster.

  • Lenin-Gil Phillips

The MeloDrama in New York coming this fall on A&E, featuring a great cast; JR Smith, Metta World Peace, Amare Stoudamire Tyson Chandler, Steve Mills & of course James Dolan.

  • Dfrance

The Knicks need to let him walk, blow this sh1t up and start from scratch.

  • danpowers

i would co-sign that if they had a handful of first round picks and if other free agents of melos caliber or better would be avvailable anytime soon. but as it is, it appears that keeping him would be the lesser “evil”.

  • Tobias Fernandez

It is going to be a rocky season this year for the Knicks. Melo does NOT believe in this roster to win simple as that! The other players jobs is not safe they will not know if they will get traded or get cut. This is the beginning of the team chemistry falling a part by pressuring front office to make changes for him.

    Welcome to the MeloDrama Folks!

Following The Walking Dead on Sundays, A&E presents…

  • @iamMrjump

Real talk there is no loyalty in Sports… Melo needs to be a 2nd option somewhere maybe Chi-town

Translation: I want to feel important too!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

whatever they do, they need to stop loading up with guys older than the Nets coach….

Really? The League’s leading scorer needs to be a second option?

  • @iamMrjump

@disqus_oxoGJMLagc:disqus no disrespect he did that one year lead the league in scoring ! Melo isn’t a play-maker. At his position two are better than him (LBJ & Durant) scoring alone hasn’t gotten him to the NBA FINALS.. Maybe 2nd option may take some weight off, look at Flash(dwade) has no problem playing that role !

For Melo to be a second option on offense, he’d have to be paired to either LeBron or Durant. And since neither of those guys are really available, no, Melo shouldn’t be a second option. He needs a dominant point guard to feed him the ball, not Raymond Felton. Melo surrounded with scorers is not a good idea.

  • @iamMrjump

@disqus_oxoGJMLagc:disqus Melo in a Clipper Uniform ! He needs a decent big man that can guard the paint & eat the glass ! I agree Melo around scorers doesn’t work hence the current NYC Knicks team

  • @iamMrjump

    Clippers or Lakers ?

  • Caboose

The ideal situation for Melo would be if the Clippers had a brain aneurism and traded Chris Paul and JJ Redick for Felton, Smith, STAT, and Bargs.

A lineup of Paul, Shump, Metta, Melo, Chandler with JJ and Kenyon off the bench would be killer.

  • @iamMrjump

    @disqus_oxoGJMLagc:disqus lmaaooo Brain Aneurism

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

w.o wade melo would work maybe trade away joel anthony

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

melo can’t carry this knicks team. he needs a team like kobe had with his two last rings where atleast 3 players have to be top 7 in their position. LO at SF, Pau at Pf, Bynum at Center. MWP came later but he was top15 at his spot.

Lebron can adjust to melos game idk about durant because he doesnt have that vision like bron and gets his assists more on just kick and penetrate which is common scheme.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well, let’s just say, Wade is royalty in Miami. that is never happening.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    loyalty over logic

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Melo is not taking a paycut to be a 2nd banana. Melo doesn’t play defense. Melo doesn’t fit with Miami. At all.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    even for the rings.

  • RunNGun

I have an idea. Trade Melo to Minny for Love and four first rounders. Then, trade Melo’s jockstrap and used socks for Ricky Rubio. Make it happen, Walsh!

  • RunNGun

Enough to win not one, not two, not three, not four, not five… :)

  • Tobias Fernandez

Ya Raymond Felton will most likely be gone. I really think Melo may recruit Tony Parker.

Several years ago the Bulls were in discussions to get Melo via trade in return for Noah, Gibson, others, and picks. Now it is possible that those three form the best frontcourt in the league.

I don’t think Deng is willing to take the pay cut the Bulls want to give him, and the Bulls aren’t willing to pay him what he wants (since he can’t dribble or score over 20 points consistently). One beat writer is stated as saying that in all reality he will be gone. Most people have always thought that after this year is when Boozer will be amnestied and Mirotic will head over. The latest rumors over the past year or so is that the Bulls have no desire to dump Boozer. However, if it means bringing in the league’s most versatile scorer, immensely increasing your chances at winning a title, and having any type of financial flexibility whatsoever, that would be the way to go. It is only early in the preseason but Taj Gibson is playing with extreme confidence and scoring the ball extremely efficient. Due to his defensive prowess and his offensive productivity as of late he would be an upgrade of Boozer anyways given the fact that Boozer is probably the worst help side defender in the league.

They will soon have to pay Jimmy Butler in the range of $7-$10 million along with Mirotic who will demand just under that, but the expiring contracts of Deng, Hinrich, and Boozer (amnestied) will allow them to do that while also having some flexibility, albeit very slight. They will need to replace the backup PG and C positions with losing veterans Hinrich and Nazr after this season but hopefully they could find players who don’t fall apart, i.e. Hinrich, and someone who can actually run (Nazr). Ramon Sessions and Greg Stiemsma are two guys I would look at.

Rose has been “more explosive” this year and hopefully next year he can be “more of a recruiter” to entice Melo to bring his talents to the Windy City. I cannot think of a better place for him if he wants to win. They will have the money. He won’t be required to play the 4 that often. He would be surrounded by defensive players and a coach who brings out the best in everyone (see: Marco Belinelli, Nate Robinson, John Lucas, etc.). And last but definitely not last, playing along side the best point guard in the game. That two-man game would be unguardable! Having Melo would take so much pressure off of Rose, especially during late game situations.

They would truly be the favorites to knock off the Heat if Melo went to the Bulls in 2014! Until then I will just enjoy watching D Rose back in action, but this will always be something in the back of my mind.

This is where I wish Nash was 6 years younger….

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

this is where I wish Allen Iverson could have gotten a chance in his prime to test whether he was pound for the pound the best person ever to play basketball against all the pg in the league from Derrick Rose to Ricardo Rubio to Lebron James.. not really joshing joshing but seriously you must be from Maryland with a name like Dacre

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Haha…yeah how did you know? Maryland by way of Sydney Australia.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

the etymology of your name is confusing. why did you choose that user name? is it a surname? also I heard the health care is great in australia. Whose pound for pound better athlete Sonny Bill Williams or Steve Nash?

  • grgeblck

Funny. He should evaluate himself first before he presents himself to other people.

  • JML-G

Lakers got nothing more to offer to Melo than what he already has with Knicks

  • pposse

    rose doesnt recruit

  • pposse

you can build, sustain and expand any business with loyalty. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

No matter where he goes this coming offseason melo cannot win a title until he adjust his playing style

SBW was an enigma in the NRL code (Rugby League) but got injured through key stages as a young man, he switched to Rugby Union (as gridiron is to university in USA, Rugby Union is to college in Australia/UK) and played well in that code, he had just come back to NRL this last season and won the national premiership (the grand final) with the Eastern Sydney Roosters…. Australian football codes are dangerous, think American football without any protection, also SBW is a semi-professional boxer. Pound for pound….. SBW will probably edge Nashty in the ‘better athlete’ stakes. My name is of English/Welsh origins and it is my middle name.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    that’s awesome.
