Gordon Hayward, Utah Jazz Reportedly ‘Far Apart’ in Contract Extension Talks

We knew the Utah Jazz were interested in signing Gordon Hayward to an extension before the October 31 deadline, but according to Yahoo!, the Jazz and Hayward are a ways away from getting a deal done: “As the deadline for Class of 2010 contract extensions looms at midnight on Friday, the Utah Jazz and forward Gordon Hayward remain far apart in discussions, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Talks are expected to pick up this week, but there’s nothing resembling even the baseline for an agreement in place, sources told Yahoo. Discussions could push all the way to the final hours of the Oct. 31 deadline. The Jazz have re-signed Derrick Favors to a four-year, $47 million-plus extension and have been in talks with Hayward’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, on a proposed deal. So far, there’s been little progress or momentum, but many of these deals need the pressure of a deadline to get sides to move. The Jazz will have the right to match an offer sheet on Hayward in restricted free agency next summer and need to weigh how much more it could cost the franchise to ultimately retain him should he hit the open market.”

Can someone explain to me his appeal? Dude is a trainwreck on defense.

“all round nice guy” – he’s not going to party hard, probably gets on great with the young fans at home games, fundamentally sound. We were all talking last week about the “white guy” award…who makes the best of their otherwise pedestrian abilities – Gordan Hayward is the standard by which that is measured. Look up ‘over achiever’ and there’s his photo?!!

to be honest they could have offered favors less and he would have still signed with them. and hayward should be offered like a 3 year 25m deal would sound good

I mean honestly, I don’t think he’s that good at all. He’s putting up mediocre stats on a mediocre team. He hasn’t really improved, he’s just got more minutes. He works hard, and he’s a really nice guy, but that’s about it. Whatever he gets will be too much.

If you’re interested in knowing; the Jazz are currently offering Gordon Hayward a 4 year 49 million dollar contract with incentives to be higher in the 50+ million range if he produces to their expectations.

    Dear Lord.

  • RKJ92

I know.. They are putting too much money into unproven players.. Not good.. They will still have Kanter to pay as well.. And we all know the going rate on skilled big men $$$ :-/

  • Smits#45

Exactly. I think their main priority is to keep Kanter. Forget the contract extension of Hayward. Just let another team bid on him and match if it´s a reasonable price. I can´t believe there would be another team that would offer him the money that he wants. Maybe that will put him back down to Earth.

He’s actually not that bad at all. At anything. I actually think he’s gonna have a break out(ish) type year. Most of the league is really high on him.

nice shooter, has had some moments. But I really think people are dreaming if they still see NBA All Star in his future.

  • JML-G

he too soft for the NBA anyways, good luck in Europe

favors of all ppl didnt deserve that much money!!!!! hayward is a good player, even better fantasy asset than ppl think. the guy just has so many abilities with gd size, actually good leaper and chasedown blocker. i think for Jazz, they should’ve paid hayward what favors got.

Let him become RFA give the Jazz a chance to see what they have in him they obviously are going to tank this year and the draft has some pretty impressive small forwards signing back Hayward might log jam them if he has a good year and impresses than match the offer in RFA i doubt anyone gambles big money on him because the jazz aren’t exactly forced to match it
