Kevin Garnett Refused Jason Kidd’s Plan to Reduce His Minutes

Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd had the quite reasonable idea to significantly cut back Kevin Garnett’s playing time this season, in an effort to save the veteran for the Playoffs. KG, who is a basketball maniac, wasn’t trying to hear any of it (and the team now says Garnett won’t sit out back-to-backs.) Per the NY Post: “I think Jason forgot last year,’ Garnett said when asked if Kidd going through a similar experience as a player last season helped their mutual understanding of the situation. Garnett then added, ‘He got amnesia,’ as he stood up and ended the interview, drawing laughs. Kidd later was apprised of Garnett’s comments and asked if he played too much last season, when Kidd started more than 40 games for the Knicks before fading down the stretch, including shooting 0-for-17 over his final 10 games in the playoffs. ‘As a player, my mentality is that I only take it one day at a time,’ Kidd said. ‘I can’t look at it as a bigger picture because I’m trying to win that one ballgame. For me, I tried to win and do whatever it took, and we had some injuries. Maybe I was out there a little bit too long, but at the end of the day, we won, and we had a great run, but we had an Indiana team that was better.’ It’s that ‘one day at a time’ mentality Kidd had as a player he is hoping to keep Garnett from falling into, particularly as he approaches 50,000 regular- season minutes for his career — a mark Kidd himself eclipsed last season before retiring. ‘Whenever you get over 15 years, the years don’t matter,’ Kidd said. ‘You just take it day-by-day, and he’s been great. For me and him, he respects me and I respect him. I just sat in that seat. So, for me, to get him to the finish line is my goal.’”

I don’t understand KGs quote. If Kidd forgot about his own struggles with burnout from last year, he wouldn’t be considering this “rest plan” for KG would he?

maybe KG was talking about himself? maybe he thinks 29MPG is not a limited number of minutes.
(i have no idea, i’m just trying to make sense of this myself)

KG looked very sharp (for his age) against the knicks in the playoffs. i mean heck, in game 6 he played 41 minutes and by banging with anthony down low it was the younger anthony who got hurt, not old a*s garnett.

his last 3 games of that series? 15 and 10, 16 and 18, and 13 and 17. doesnt look like somebody being close to run out of feul.

I agree, that’s why I’m confused. His quote, at least to me, implies that he’s FOR a reduced minute plan, not against it.

That’s the only way it makes sense, but then the article alludes to Kidds season so it makes it confusing.

to me it looks like he meant it in a way like “he saw me playing in the playoffs kicking knick’s butts down low. did he already forget?”

i’m thinking this may just be a case of assumption based journalism

i understood it meaning garnett’s minutes. but yeah a little confusing, maybe related to the fact that garnett was interviewed

Imagine how good BK could be if Pop was managing minutes for this team.
