Royce White Didn’t Fly With the Sixers to Europe

Philadelphia Sixers forward Royce White did not a board a plane bound for Bilbao, Spain on Thursday. On the advice of the team doctor, the Sixers let White skip the trip across the pond. Per the Philly Inquirer: “New 76er Royce White tried last week to dispel any speculation that air travel would hinder him from playing for the team this season. However, the 6-foot-8 forward, who has an anxiety disorder, wasn’t among the 14 players who flew here Thursday. The Sixers will face Bilbao Basket on Sunday before facing Oklahoma City in Manchester, England on Tuesday. ‘It really was just based on our team doctor giving me and (GM Sam Hinkie) and the club advice that it may be best for him to remain at home,’ Sixers coach Brett Brown said of White’s absence. ‘You know we are with him. We will support and help him.’ It was widely believed that White’s perceived fear of flying contributed to his failure to play in the NBA last season.”

Couldn’t he take a steamer across the pond? C’Mon Royce, be creative!

  • Yknot

With first pick in the 2014 draft the 76ers select……..

  • Caboose

Yeah he’ll never play in the NBA. I feel for the guy, psychological disorders are tough, but he’s been given every opportunity to succeed. His attitude towards the Rockets really soured me on him.

  • Smits#45

If this whole basketball thing doesn´t work out he should try and become a pilot and then refuse to fly. Let´s see if Delta Airlines is more open minded than the Sixers´ or Rockets´ management.

  • ScrewT

So glad the Rockets managed to get rid of him.

  • danpowers

does it make me an ignorant evil person when i first had to laugh about this headline?

i mean, its that simple: didnt the sixers or rockets watch the A-team?

didnt the sixers or rockets watch the A-team?

  • pride

    This guy is history?

  • Anthony

    That’s a long damn swim….

  • cflip

Doesn’t matter we’re barely paying him much, gave up nothing for him, and can just not pick up his option. He’s not even who we were actually targeting when we made the deal, he was just a toss-in. We can just send him down to the D-league too.

how did he travel with his college team?

  • KingBenjamin

It says “It was widely believed that White’s perceived fear of flying contributed to his failure to play in the NBA last season.” It wasn’t believed that flying was the issue, it is the issue.

bus, or his dad drove him mostly I believe.

  • Stepfan Raiford

This is perfect for the Sixers tanking plans.

  • TBRK

    no, really?

  • Guest

Nah man, that’s him in the middle with The Lonely Island

  • BugEyes

So is everything that went down with the rockets, due to him scared of flying and that is it?

  • Caboose

Fear of flying then being a douche about it.

  • Caboose

And his attitude towards everything the Rockets tried to do.

  • Busta213

Nah, there is more to it – he has a general anxiety disorder. The fear of flying is just one part of it; I think he is basically trying to avoid all situations that could lead to him having his panic attacks.

He wanted a “mental health protocol” which essentially meant an independent doctor would have the final decision on clearing him to play rather than the team doc. when he hasn’t gotten what he has wanted he has pulled back from playing it seems.

  • Busta213

Nope – I think that was the reaction the writer was looking for!
Who expected him to go on a transatlantic trip if its a struggle to get him to fly a couple of hours away.

  • danpowers

cant they just hand him food with sleeping pills or roofies before outside trips? would make everything much easier for everyone

  • urriah

what if.. its very near impossible but what if, when royce plays and dominates??

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com/ Dutch Rich

It all sounds familiar. Him saying to his boss, “I ain’t goin on no plane fool”!!

  • danpowers

exactly! thats what im talking about lol

  • Basketball_iQ

    Marcus Fizer part 2. Lmao

  • Basketball_iQ

BofL – his dad drove him

  • Basketball_iQ

When it’s time for that option to get picked up,, we can all wave bye bye bc he’s black balled himself out of the league.

  • Basketball_iQ

The best post you’ve ever made – BofL

  • Basketball_iQ

Psychologically, this guy has to know if he doesn’t move forward from this before his option comes up, he’s done.

So game tied with one shot to win it…. he’s not the guy you give the ball too…

  • Da Real

It’s gonna be so bad for this guy when he actually plays and shows he is not even that good after all this bs. Bigger contracts have been eaten before, why not just cut him? No GM is getting fired for that move, it’s just bad press and a distraction at this point
