Benched Nick Young Wants to Win Sixth Man of the Year Award

It didn’t take very long for Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni to demote Nick Young (in favor of Xavier Henry), but the relentlessly positive forward is taking it in stride, and hopes to make the most of his new role. Per the LA Daily News and Lakers Nation: “That’s my man. No bad blood,’ Young said of Henry. ‘What’s the ice skater lady?’ Young was jokingly referred to Tonya Harding, the former U.S. figure skater whose ex-husband conspired to assault competitor Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 U.S Figure Skating Championship. ‘It’s cool. It’ll be all right,’ Young said. ‘It’s too early to try to start some controversy. I’m going with the flow.’ Henry has become one of the Lakers’ most pleasant surprises, averaging 13 points on 40 percent shooting. Meanwhile, Young has averaged 8.3 points on only a 27 percent clip. ‘Xavier is a better defender,’ D’Antoni said. ‘Guys have certain attributes. He doesn’t get his shot as well as Nick, but he gets it. We needed that to start the game off with a mindset. It’s a lot of little factors. It’s early to say this is for sure. But it’s something to try right now.’ Young hardly provided much of an explanation for his shooting struggles other than ‘just missing shots.’ But he said he and D’Antoni talked about his role and remains on board with it.”

“‘Xavier is a better defender,’ D’Antoni said.” as if he cares.

one is shooting 40% and the other 27%, hence the change

I have not seen X play much since his Kansas days. He is very aggressive in getting to the basket and doesn’t shy away from contact. Meanwhile, pretty much all Nick Young does is shoot contested jumpers. Lakers fans must be a tolerant lot — they would be booing him after 3 possessions in NY.

Why is Nick Young getting headlines? Why?

“Henry has become one of the Lakers’ most pleasant surprises, averaging 13 points on 40 percent shooting.”…..

Slam high school diary keeper finally showing his potential

Young is built for 6th man. He is of the same vain as JR Smith and Jamal Crawford.

i like to watch young just for basketball comedy reasons. it’s like they took a player from nba street vol.2 and put him in an actual nba game. 18 crossovers in a row followed by a fade away 20 footer

Henry’s impact is undeniable if you actually watch Lakers games.

Young is a perfect fit with Farmar, Johnson, and Kaman.

true, he can really light it up. just not overly efficient and he doesnt really do much besides putting the ball into the hoop at all

  • retrobat

ya I dropped this guy from my team by LAL’s second game.

Am I the only one who was just focused on the girl’s twitter avi? She’s pretty damn cute.

he’s more of an 8th man. He doesn’t even know how to spell “good shot” let alone recognize the need to take one. At least Crawford and Smith know
“if you can’t see the hoop, don’t shoot”

He’s really pissing me off as a starter.

  • LakeShow

    He’s been terrible.

  • LakeShow

    Yeah, probably.

I meant a offensive spark off the bench. Not 6th man per se.

He can score efficiently enough to be helpful…CAN… I hope D’Antoni helps him find a role.

yeah, i think he’s kind of like Isiah Rider was. Where, if he is feeling it, you ride that horse till the finish line. If not, you don’t even let him get out of the blocks for fear that he will trip and murder all the horses around him.

I hope lakers fans aren’t fooled by this. Sixers and wizards fans know that nick young is a scrub. He has ability, but no idea how to use his talents in the nba. He will not play any defense or take any good shots. He will show flashes that convince you he could really be something but this is all fools gold. This article pretty much sums him up http://deadspin.com/5952156/deadspin-nba-shit-list-1-nick-young-who-is-the-devil

I think I’ve grown a few grey hairs over the past week. I knew what we were getting when we signed him but he’s just been atrocious.

    same here

This move is great because having young as your starting 3 forces young to guard bigger/stronger wingmen. we all know nick is far from a defensive threat. His nitch is warming up gettin’ back-2-back-2-back buckets all game & his best chance to succeed at doing that is against secondary defenders of an opposing team without using all of his leg strength trying to defend starting wingmen.

Starting lineup: Farmar, Henry, Johnson, Kaman, Gasol
    Bench: Blake/Nash, Meeks, Young,Williams,Hill

  • LakeShow

    Yeah… that’s about right haha.

One of those instances when there’s a lot of stuff which stats cannot quantify.
