Damian Lillard Reportedly Considering Slam Dunk Contest

A pair of newly-minted NBA All-Star point guards are mulling taking part in the Dunk Contest. John Wall has already addressed it, and Damian Lillard is said to also be considering the possibility:

Portland’s franchise player will be quite busy come All-Star Weekend. He says he expects to defend his Skills Challenge title, he’s a headliner in the Rising Stars Challenge game and the grandest of them all: he’ll be coming off the bench for the West in the All-Star game.

If you think that’s too much, CSNNW.com has received word via a league source that Lillard is considering participating in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, though Lillard refuses to comment on it. The Wizards’ John Wall is mulling over the dunk competition, too.

The reigning Rookie of the Year hasn’t missed a single game throughout his NBA career. He averaged 38.6 minutes per game last season and this season he’s at 36.0. There will obviously be concerns that he’ll tire out in New Orleans while most of the league will utilize the time to allow their bodies time to recuperate. He acknowledged that he has a busy schedule ahead of him but downplays the actual workload on the court.

“It’s not like I’m going out there playing in a real, regular season game,” Lillard explained. “I’ll play some minutes in the Rising Stars, which is not a game where people play hard. I’ll do the Skills Challenge, where I’ll be on the court for maybe two minutes, total. And the All-Star game, I’m probably not going to play a bunch of minutes. I think the off the court stuff will be more overwhelming than the on the court stuff.”

it would be pretty awesome if he did the dunk contest, skills challenge, 3 point, rookie-soph and all star game

  • Dfrance

Trying to think of a 1st or 2nd year player dynamic enough to be a serious contender in all 3 of those events plus eligible for the Rising Stars and All Star game. A young Vince Carter maybe? Or Ray Allen

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

uhm, Terrence Ross could compete in all 3 this year

  • jrandz

  • TriggaMan

In related news, victor oladipo said lillard wasn’t allowed to participate

  • bike

Used to watch him play at Weber State and never, in a gazillion years, did I ever think he would be an All-Star in his second year in the league.

  • Harvey

Kobe of course. (He has actually done them all, but not in the same weekend)

  • Dfrance

Well yeah, but I meant someone with All Star credentials as well. Maybe I should have put that. lol

  • spit hot fiyah

yeah ray allen, vince was not good enough of a shooter in his first 2 years

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

lol probably would have been integral. are we saying a former/current all star who at some point could have “won” all 3 in the same day?
Tracy McGrady / Kobe Bryant are probably it right?

  • LakeShow

Yo, check my attendance numbers on the Sonics article.

Haven’t seen enough Portland games.. Didn’t know Lillard could get up like that enough to be in a dunk comp. Would be pretty awesome if he’s in it then!

  • Dfrance

They’d have to be in their 1st or 2nd year. Basically everything Spit said. A current or former, 1st or 2nd year player, capable of winning all 3 contest and good enough to make the Rising Star AND All Star game in 1 year. Lol.

I don’t think TMac was there yet in his 2nd year. I was thinking Vince or Kobe. Maybe Ray Allen, he had some hops back in the day.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Ray competed in the dunk contest one year didn’t he?

  • Daniel Noel

kobe never did 3 point shootout

  • TheRealness

    Yep. 1997 with Kobe

  • Oshea

Baron Davis could’ve won all three.

  • K

D Rose could have did all 3! He won skills his rookie year with a sick reverse dunk and he was in rookie soph game and all star game In his second year!

  • Caboose

Young JR Smith, MAYBE. But he wasn’t/isn’t an All-Star so…

My pick though? An All-Star to win the 3 point contest, skills contest, and dunk contest, all in his 2nd year?

    Steve Francis. Boom.

  • Slick Ric

Not the three point contest though, he didnt even take threes his first two seasons.

  • Lloyd

A case could be made for T-Ross in the 3-pt contest, but I wouldn’t buy a Skills Challenge nod.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

That’s not one of the three I was talking about lol, I know he wouldn’t stand a chance

  • Lloyd

My bad I thought you were responding to Spit’s “be a serious contender in all 3 of those events plus eligible for the Rising Stars and All Star game” criteria. You mean dunk contest, 3-pt shoot out, and Rising Stars? (although he was left off the rosters for the latter which is BS)

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Yeah definitely, my bad I didn’t even see spits comment

  • real gu

Amian should consider playing some D. The man gets torched by every pg n the league.

  • Caboose

Not sure if you saw my post, but a 2nd year player who could be in Rising Stars, 3PT, Dunk, and Skills?

    Steve Francis.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

(I’ve been operating via email the whole day, so haven’t seen much) Are we saying compete or win? Francis couldn’t really shoot that well, I know his % disagrees somewhat, but he really would have had to be in the middle of the best day of his life to win the 3pt contest.

  • Caboose

I’d say he could win Dunk and Skills, and MAYBE advance past the first round in the 3pt.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Yeah that sounds about right

  • Caboose

Other guys who could do that (dunk, skills, 3pt, rising stars in 1st or 2nd year)…hmm…
    Baron Davis
    Stephon Marbury
    Kenny Smith

  • shane

I rather see him in the three point contest

  • Todd P

    Kenny the Jet

  • Dfrance

Gotta be an All Star too, that takes Kenny Smith out of it. But I like Baron. Not sure if Steph would be a legit Dunk contest contender tho.
