Dirk Nowitzki: ‘I Don’t Think We’re A Playoff Team’

Dirk Nowitzki was reasonably upset with his team following the Clippers’ 16-2 run to end the game without Chris Paul. From ESPNDallas.com:

Nowitzki was fine physically after taking some anti-inflammatories and getting his ankle taped up before scoring 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting against the Los Angeles Clippers. But he felt miserable after the Mavs’ 119-112 loss, an inexcusable outcome after Dallas built a 13-point lead and L.A. lost All-Star point guard Chris Paul to a separated shoulder midway through the third quarter.

“It’s a game we can’t lose,” Nowitzki said. “Can’t afford to lose that one.”

Nowitzki has had similar takes after a few other losses this season. The Mavs have blown leads of 17 to the Atlanta Hawks, 18 to the Golden State Warriors and 19 to the Toronto Raptors in losses. With the exception of the Atlanta loss, all of those happened at the American Airlines Center.

The sting of this loss led to Nowitzki’s most pessimistic comment of the season, by far.

“The way we let those games slip away, I don’t think we’re a playoff team,” Nowitzki said. “We’ve got to win those games. We’ve got to find a way to get those stops and protect the home court.”

He playing all right. He is going to score, but Monta “Gunner” Ellis is leading Dallas now. Dallas goes as he plays.

  • Mike Gilbert

The only piece keeping them from being a decent playoff team is a solid defensive center who can stay on the court. Having guards who play defense wouldn’t hurt either…

  • brothasdontsurf

That last sentence summarizes why they won’t make the playoffs.

    We all knew this…..

Crazy. It’s rare for a superstar be so candid about his team’s chances. Usually players will spout off some cliches in public even if they know deep inside they have no chance. I like how Dirk didn’t really throw any of his teammates under the bus. He merely stated that they have to pick up their defensive intensity without really calling anyone out.

  • Caboose

No kidding. They had some guy once….I think he helped them win a title…oh who could it be?

I have no idea why they let Chandler walk. Dirk needs a guy like him.

  • Mike Gilbert

they let him walk to have a shot at Deron Williams or Dwight. In retrospect, so stupid. But damn they’d be a very good team right now if Dwight had signed

  • Caboose

If only Dwight went for that goofy video. As silly as it was, I kinda liked it.

  • TBRK

stop being so modest…in todays NBA everyones a playoff team……oh thats just the East my bad
