Rudy Gay Undecided on Testing Free Agency

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Things have worked out pretty well for both Rudy Gay and the Raptors ever since the Sacramento Kings acquired the veteran forward via trade.

Prior to their first meeting last night since the blockbuster move, Toronto had gone 18-10, while Gay put up averages of 20.7 points on 53% shooting as a King.

After hitting rock-bottom in Toronto, at one point shooting a career-worst 38.8% from the field, Gay has found success in Sac-Tow. But he’s not ready to reveal his cards when it comes to potentially opting out and entering the free agent market this summer.

Rudy, 27, has a $19.3 million player option on the last year of his deal.

Per ESPN:

Q: How much are you listening to some of the negative noise that’s out there nowadays about your game?

A: Honestly, of course, at times you think about it. You hear things that make you want to prove people wrong. But at this point I know who I am. And luckily the people here [with the Kings] know who I am and what kind of player I can be for this team. That’s all that really matters. So I just try to tune it out and just play basketball. If I can go out there and do [that], that’s the best I can do.

Q: Which way are you leaning in terms of opting into your contract for next season or opting out?

A: I’m not sure. I have to go into the summer with my people, think about everything, weigh out the pros and cons. I don’t know yet. But Sacramento’s been great to me thus far. Obviously I’m trying to tune it all out right now. All I can think about right now is how great Sacramento’s been to me.

Free agency will become a factor a few months from now, but at the moment, the only answers Rudy is required to give are on the court.

Gay put up 24 points and had 10 rebounds in a satisfying 109-101 win against his former team Wednesday night.

Nobody is going to offer him the same money as he’d get in the final year of his current contract.

  • Clipper fan

    He will sign with clippers

The Clippers have no money puddin pop

  • Ryan Silva

I’m sure he has concerns about messing with a good thing. Not to say that money isn’t a factor but Rudy had a bit of a career scare in Toronto. He may now be more concerned about fit than a big payday.

Did you really just call him puddin pop? Lol

  • CubicleDunker

By looking at JR Smith/Monta Ellis type deals he figures to get about $8M/year. Is resigning for 3/25M worth giving up a $20M option? Doubt it, I’d say take the $20M then the season after ink a 3/$14 type deal and ball

had to let him down easy

LOL at you editing your comment to “Clippers noo wayy”

i get getting guaranteed money for more years, but it would be idiotic to opt out. it’s not like is 33 and this will be his very last multi year deal. he has only had one major injury in his career, and he came back from that one. opt in, keep playing smart and get long term money in ’15

I’m glad to see that Rudy is finally playing well and getting some respect in Sactown. He’s a good player, was just in a bad situation in TO.

If he actually wants to win, Sacto could honestly make it happen. Imagine if they score ANOTHER top 5 pick. Think of a roster like this moving forward…

    Isaiah
    McLemore
    Gay
    Vonleh
    Cousins
with Thornton, Thompson, Williams, and Landry off the bench

There’s some serious potential in that squad.

  • Nathan Shane Long

And just how many years have the Kings been stacking up lottery picks with no success?

  • i_ball

I don’t think he will opt out. If he does it will be the same thing as Kirilenko in the summer. Will other teams want to investigate that too or if there are no Russians involved it is OK to throw away a pile of money? Keep gettin them checks, Rudy!

  • GP

It was a bad situation because he made it a bad situation. He was jacking up 18 shots a game and converting on 38% of them, but hogging the ball. The Raptors had a lot of players he could have deferred to (Jonas, Lowry, Derozan), but he was the black hole on offense that stopped the ball and went for his.

It was a great trade for both teams because it allowed the Raptors to develop Ross, Derozan and Jonas, and Gay got a chance to play with players around him who did not play the same position.

  • bigdogneversleeps

Except he has a history, beyond the last two of three years, where he has demonstrated he is more valuable than a JR Smith or a Monta Ellis. There is no way a team isn’t offering 4yr/50M+ for that level of production. It needs to be a team with a solid star or star like player in place, but teams like Minnesota, New York if it could clear the room, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Boston, New Orleans if it can deal Gordon and Evans like they want to (or just one), maybe Miami if one or two of the big three leave (maybe Bosh, a chance Lebron, but no way Wade), Dallas, Washington are all teams that would like to have a guy like this to help their teams become contenders next year
