Top 50: Rajon Rondo, no. 17

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Franklyn Calle

Remember when Rajon Rondo’s job was to simply bring the ball up the floor and dish it out to one of the “Big Three”? He was returning from his rookie campaign, and Boston had just finished in last place in the Atlantic division the previous season. There were questions and skepticism as to whether the 6-1 lanky guard could run the point properly, the most important position on the floor, on a team that had high expectation after having acquired Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in the offseason.  But so much has changed since then. The former Kentucky Wildcat is no longer a sidekick to KG, Allen, and Paul Pierce. Today, he is the most important player of the franchise. He was the reason why Boston was only five points short from their 18th world championship. You take Rondo out of the equation and the Celtic’s 2010 playoff run wouldn’t have even been clRajon Rondoose to how it went down. He has the highest value of any player wearing Celtic green, in terms of upside and promise.

Last season, Rondo was putting up new career highs all across the stat sheet, particularly in points, assists and steals. Aside from his 13.7 points per game, the Louisville, Kentucky, native finished fourth in the NBA in assists. His 9.8 assists per game only trailed Steve Nash, Chris Paul, and Deron Williams. In addition, he led the League in steals with 2.3 per game, the first Celtic player EVER to do so.

At the beginning of last season, Rondo signed a guaranteed five-year $55 million extension with the Celtics, a sign that Boston recognized how important of a player he is to their success.

Rondo, who was selected as a Eastern Conference reserve for the NBA All-Star game for the first time in his young career, denoted his talent last season, breaking league and franchise records.

In a late March home game against the Sacramento Kings, Rondo surpassed Rick Fox’s 167 steals and became the franchise’s all-time leader for steals in a single season. Not to mention, he finished with 18 assists that night as well — a career high for him at the time.

Three games later, Rondo broke Bob Cousy’s record for most assist in a single season by a Celtic player, a record that stood for 50 years, after a 23-point and 10 assists performance against the Houston Rockets.

In Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Rondo finished with 13 points and 19 assists. The assists tied his career-high, as well as the franchise’s record for most assists in a playoff game. In Game 4, he joined Oscar Robertson and Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in NBA history to ever finish with 29 points, 18 rebounds, and 13 assists in a single playoff game.

I don’t about you but for someone who has only been in the League for four years, this speaks volumes considering the fact that he has already either broken or tied records held by other NBA legends.

When you considered the fact that Rondo’s assists have been increasing at a rate of almost two assists per season (1.93 to be exact), a double-double season average for this upcoming season is inevitable. Also, if you factor in that Boston has made some nice upgrades to their bench by adding Shaquille O’Neal and Jermaine O’Neal to be backups in their frontcourt, after the Heat and the Lakers revamped their teams, as well as the continued steady improvements of Kendrick Perkins (10.1 pts & 7.6 rpg last season) Glenn Davis (6.3 pts & 3.8 rbs last season), there is no doubt that Rondo’s 9.8 assist per game will be well into the the double digits. (Remember: His assists average have gone up at an average of 2 assists every year since he’s been in the L.)

Now, a lot of you guys who don’t really like Rondo are going to argue that he can’t shoot the ball. And, well, you’re right to a certain extent. Rondo has had trouble with the consistency of his jumper and free throws. That’s something I’m pretty sure he’s aware is his biggest flaw. But despite all the records he’s already broken, we have to remember that he’s only 24 years old. There is definitely room to grow and improve. If four years down the road, meaning eight years into his pro career, his shots haven’t seen a significant improvement, then we can talk. We’ve seen LeBron James’ shooting improve throughout the first seven years of his career. This 6-1 guard has tremendous upside. He has already surpassed individual franchise records for a team that holds the most championships in NBA history and have featured the likes of Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Bob Cousy and Dave Cowens.

Just imagine what he could do once his perimeter game becomes respectable.

He really needs to improve his offense if they want to beat Miami in the playoffs. He has a lot of talent but no range and no ft.

  • CeltsKG5

    RONDOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

No one tell Rondo he’s the highest ranked Celtic.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    I love this kids game.

  • ohsnapkid

lack of stephen jackson on the list totally nullifies the whole thing. and we’re not even talking about a fringe top-50 player, either.

  • don

he doesn’t really need to improve his jumper RIGHT NOW, PP and RAY can do that for them. besides, this guy gets to the rim anytime he wants.

  • starky larky

lemme tell you, this guy will be the best point guard in the league one day.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Philos’ and JTaylor … did ya’ll check the GM Survey for this year? : D

Anyways, good spot for Rondo. I guess shaq is top 15?

  • hoodsnake

They gonna sag off him like the Lakers did in the finals forcing him to shoot

  • j

yes he does need the jumper right now. if he had it last year, Boston might be the champs instead of the chumps. Kobe was able to sag off of Rondo that entire series to play help d cause kid couldn’t buy a jumper.

  • vtrobot

RONDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Hi haters! The exclusion of S. Jax. is inexcusable. Silly popularity contest. No way Shaq is top 15 anymore.

While his FT numbers need to improve, it might be a blessing in disguise that he can’t shoot very well; the drive to the rim isn’t always there and it means he won’t get wrapped up in scoring and play more of a pure point guard which this team needs with such a talented roster. He has two years to be ready to step up as franchise player and carry the offensive load a bit more, until then I’ll take him as one of the best PGs in the L. This means that Rose is above him, which I could not disagree with more, but oh well, Rondo will get his.

  • JD

Rondo is the face of the Celtics franchise and will be for a very long time to come. Oh btw just saying its Eastern Conference not Easter conference, and its extent not extend

  • J.C.

I was a Rondo hater when he first game into the League but this kid has honestly converted me and now he’s easily one of my top 5 favourite players. I don’t ever see him turning into a great shooter (his hands are bigger than LeBron’s – seriously) but if he could at least make the defense play him honestly he could be the best PG in the L one day. Having said that, Jason Kidd showed us just how far rebounding and passing can take a PG without a reliable outside shot.

  • Mischeief

Good to see the support for Rondo. He truely is a great PG, you should expect a great season from him this year

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

My man, Rondo. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you guys!

  • Blackphantom

He’s good, now all he needs to do is learn how to make free throw consistently enough to not be picked on about it

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Important piece to the Celtics. His contract is well-deserved.
Yet, it is Amazing how successful you can be in the NBA without knowing how to shoot the basketball.

  • igetmoney01

WWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW rondo gets 17?????? your gunna put derek rose before him????? wow i lost all interest in this top 50

  • earl

no stephen jackson? No aaron brooks? Brooks was the nba MIP last year and led the league in 3′s while averaging 20 ppg.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

@igetmoney01 you know why? Cause Rose is better.

  • JTaylor21

@James, sure I looked at a survey of a bunch of MORONS who make dumb trades and sign OVERRATED players to enormous/head shaking contracts. Most people on this site can run a team better than those clowns. They should survey the players because they know more than those clowns.

  • add

he needs to be at least in the top 12

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

Good write-up Frank. Rondo is 6’1 but his ego is 8 feet.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

    … And I like that…

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I knew it would only be a matter of time before some clown brought up Derrick Rose.

  • T-Money

Rondo is a very good player but his few flaws are so great that he can actually hurt his team at times. I’ve noticed for the last few years that his production diminishes the further Boston goes in the playoffs. He absolutely murdered Miami and Cleveland but his scoring average came back down to less than 15 ppg vs Orlando and LAL and he only hit 10+ assits 3 times in 13 games vs those teams. His minutes also decreased every round.

  • flimo

    MVP

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

who’s more important to the team in terms of success: rondo, or kg?

  • T-Money

Moreover, his lack of shooting was a complete liability in the finals. Not only didn’t he want to shoot from midrange but he NEVER goes to the hole late in games because he’s afraid to miss the FTs (26% in the finals). He shot 6 fts combined in games 4 thru 7. And he’s stubborn as hell and gets violated in the post by bigger guards (Doc mentions this often). Rondo is one these guys that add so much to a team but also takes out a lot of the table. I guess I’m not sold on him as a franchise anything once the big 3 implodes (and neither is Boston judging by their attempts to trade him last year and their lowball contract extension).

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@davidR – IMO it depends who they playin.

  • JTaylor21

TMoney is right, Rondo is a very good point but he will NEVER EVER be the best point in the league as long as guys like CP/DWill are still around. Because those guys are complete point guards that can beat you countless ways while rondo can only beat you two ways. If CP or DWill were the PG for the celts instead of him, they would’ve won 3 rings by now. Rondo should just thank the basketball gods for his fortunes instead of acting like his sh*t don’t stink.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

good spot for Rondo, Rose shoud´ve been here allready, fu(kin love affair, SLAM´s on Derrick´s balls

  • vtrobot

Isn’t Timmy D. considered one of the greatest players ever? To this day, isn’t his free throw shooting a huge liability? @davidR – It’s really hard not to say KG (because no one comes close to changing the attitude of the entire team like KG does), but I’m one of the people who say that RR surpassed him last season.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Can’t believe he’s going to be making less money than Noah.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

vtrobot, timmy makes his fts more consistently than rondo. if the game is on the line and rondo is on the line, forget about it

  • vtrobot

@ davidR: I know that Timmy’s new raise-it-up-and-chuck-it-all-in-one-motion FT is better than his old ones, and yes RR’s flaws are more glaring than TD’s. I’m just saying that some of great have bad flaws. rondo has hit big FTs at the end of games. I think his head (more than his large hands) f*cks up his FT and FG shots during games. I was shocked to see how good his shooting was when I finally got around to watching that Geico HORSE competition from the ASG weekend. I think he was using those same big hands during that contest.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

ahh, i see what you’re saying. a lot of times people like to focus on what player’s cannot do, and overlook what he’s good at. i do agree though with other people saying that rondo takes away almost as much as what he brings to the table. he runs the celtic offense well, and disrupts the passing lanes, but on the flipside he still throws a lot of erratic passes and gambles a little too much on defense. still, he’s definitely making the best of his situation and is a very solid player.

Whenever i see the name Rondo this is what comes first to mind (doesn’t get much better than this):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVSgx7gKc_k&videos=9Yx2kiDILbw

Now,although Rajon ain’t the most popular “Rondo” in the history of mankind he is certainly a really entartaining bball player, especially to those who love high jumping guards (me). Having said that i will not confuse personal preferences with well documented truths: a PERIMETER player that is intentionally and repetedly(again&again&again….) left open in the most important game of his team season and one of the 1-2 of his career (you almost never play more 7th NBA finals games in your life time even if your name is Robert Horry) and is then send home (ok, at least his agent was smart enough to protect him from officially happening this) cause he can’t surpass the “Iggy of point guards” (Russell Westbrough) on his national team rotation can NEVER be considered a complete/great player.Sorry.(take notes on the last few lines my little ones. it’s a pity to have the advantage to receive FREE bball insight that others pay to get access to and in the end learn notihng).
By the way….: anybody seen Anna..???(i heard somebody saw her in……China??!!?!!)

i was waiting for this, and haven’t read the comments yet, but here goes – no way!! too high!! looks good on the celts but not the 17th best player in the league!
