Jordan’s Son Sparks Big UCF Upset

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

Central Florida has long been considered a sleeping giant on the college hoops scene. It’s Orlando location, new facilities and growing enrollment have it pegged as a school ready to become a national player. With a 57-54 home victory against No. 18 Florida on Wednesday, that giant may have started to wake up.

The Knights new coach Donnie Jones, a Billy Donovan disciple, was able to knock off his mentor on Wednesday and now his team positioned to make a possible run for postseason play this season with a 6-0 start and a quality win already under its belt.

It’s no surprise that Jones’ best player is starting to carry the team when you consider where his genes come from. Marcus Jordan, the son of his Airness, went for a team-high 18 points against Florida, and the sophomore guard leads his team with 17 ppg.

Jordan is quickly amassing his own list of accomplishments, separate from his father.

From The Washington Post:

“We definitely wanted to create something so people start talking about us,” Jordan said after the game at Orlando’s Amway Center. “We’re trying to do something special here at UCF.”

He’s already the face of UCF hoops as a sophomore. His mom, Juanita Jordan, and sister Jasmine were witnesses at the upset. Older brother, Jeff, also is on the UCF team. Juanita Jordan doesn’t do interviews, but, when asked a reporter if Marcus had just had his first marquee moment, replied with a smile:

“You think so?”

Jordan isn’t the only reason that UCF looks much improved a disappointing 15-17 season last year, but it would be foolish to think his lineage doesn’t bring some extra attention to the school, and UCF is fully embracing it. For a team that is looking to become a regular contender on the national scene, having a Jordan as the face of your program is a good start.

huh… just a year ago he was causing an upset at ucf for a different reason

This kid looks nothing, plays nothing and has little to no connection to his dad when he’s playing ball. I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing.

  • slamfan4life

17 PPG @ UCF is hmmmmm like 7ppg in the L?

lol still happy for the kid, makin mommy and daddy proud <3

  • JTaylor21

I can’t believe the announcers had the nerve to compare that BS layup he did with MJ’s switcheroo vs the lakers.

  • add

why does he always have those goofy lookin goggles on?

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

That was a nice move, he got blocked and switched over to the other side. Not as nice as the MJ move, but still was pretty nice. It’ only makes since that he be compared to his father, it’s his father.

@add probably because he needs them

I’m digging Marcus game! I like what he brings to the table. I have to ‘fess up, I thought UCF was a complete joke and voiced that on Slam a few days ago. But they’re a very good defensive team and when you play good defense you have a chance especially on the college level. Coach Jones took a page out of Donavon book at beat him at his own game. Billy D. was correct, when he questioned if the Gators were worthy of a top 10 billing. They now look to be the
4th best team in the SEC behind Uk,UT, and Vandy.

Big win for my Knights. Obviously he’s not his dad, but he is making a name for himself helping UCF win some games. Its nice to finally get some attention from ESPN for our school since they rarely say anything good about us. Marcus has made Sportscenters top 10 twice now:

Steal on an inbounds pass with a nasty dunk

Let this kid play ball is it his bad that one of the greatest is his dad nope…???? Is it his fault that ppl say he made a play like da greatest nope its basketball it will be more to come please stop hatin on a kid living da dream….

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I really dislike Marcus Jordan. That kid is just straight up arrogant and has this huge sense of entitlement cause of who his dad is.

  • Bryan J Smith

Engimatic — obviously you haven’t followed Marcus. He’s been quite the opposite. It’s the media that’s been the problem. UCF’s 7′ center has been ignored, when he’s been making the blocks and hitting the boards. Plus there is UCF’s Point who Marcus followed to UCF.

  • LB

Enigmatic, do you talk to Marcus Jordan on a regular basis? Do you hang out with him? How the hell can you call him arrogant? How would you know if he has a sense of entitlement? Marcus Jordan didnt score a D1 scholarships because of his name. Michael Jordan isn’t the one averaging 17 ppg for Marcus Jordan. Clearly, Marcus Jordan earned his scholarship because he worked hard on his game. Dosent strike me as a guy that’s entitled. And like Da Holy Karron said, just let the kid play ball and live his dream!

@ Enigmatic, get over it already! you’ve been making the same comments on Marcus Jordan now for the past 2 week and I think we get the picture.

  • thalilbigkahuna

It would suck to continually be referred to as “Jordan’s son” and not be able to make a name for yourself.

  • 2k champ

Nothing “sucks” about being michael jordans son lol

  • 2k champ

“thalilbigkahuna” u kno u wish tht was your daddy

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Ha, I knew I would get those types of comments. As Big O might recall since he seems to chart my every comment on here (and I haven’t said sh*t about Marcus Jordan in the last two weeks so I don’t know what the hell you talking about, homie, but I’m a known Marcus Jordan hater so I get what you saying) I had a sh*tty personal experience with the kid once, for starters. Basically, he dissed the sh*t out of my baby brother after a game, in a very rude way, when all my little homie wanted was a pic. OK, now athletes ain’t perfect and all that, that’s cool, it’s whatever. But how the hell you people already forgot about him not wanting to wear adidas like everyone else on UCF cause he wanted to rock his father’s brand of kicks? How about him tweeting that Kobe wasn’t sh*t after Kobe won his 5th? How about him saying “f*ck Bruce Weber” when Weber dropped his brother Jeffery from the Illini team and how he couldn’t wait to whoop the Illini’s asses when UCF and Illinois meet up? Sorry, I don’t know about y’all but that sounds like a an arrogant, self-absorbed kid. And if you don’t agree, ok that’s cool, I respect y’alls opinions. And could give a sh*t less if y’all respect mine.

^^^^ yeah, what can you possibly expect from the son of MJ.

  • ???

Dam man you really are all about these posts

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Even with that explanation, your hate seems odd, enigmatic. How many pics did he already take that day? Anyways, too much about a nothing school, so far anyways

  • orl.chris

UCF is not a “nothing school”

  • ALEX80
