NBA Lockout Could Jeopardize $1 Billion in Ad Revenue

*Insert Dr. Evil voice here* Ad Age has the grim figures and details: “Although the National Football League’s potential labor dispute is more top of mind — its collective bargaining agreement with players ends in six weeks — the NBA is dealing with its own issues. While its current agreement with the players doesn’t expire until June 30, both sides are trying to avoid a situation that some sports-marketing experts have termed ‘more dire’ than the NFL labor conflict. At stake? About $1 billion in TV ad revenue for Walt Disney Co.’s ABC/ESPN and Turner Broadcasting’s TNT, the main rights holders for NBA games; sponsors and advertisers that are facing the possibility of a second potential sports-programming platform disappearing; a global stage that Nike (and, to a lesser extent, Reebok) uses to hawk shoes; a huge chunk of the $2.7 billion licensed products market, most of which Adidas makes and sells; and brand equity at a pivotal time for the league, both domestically and internationally.”

Billionaires and multi-millionaires crying about money. What a crock of sh*t. And this will apply to the NFL too, but they’re contracts ain’t off the wall like the NBA’s are.

Damn right! As a fan, I’ll turn against ownership for screwing the fans and screwing their product! All owners will lose fan equity and say ef you! The damn money gets split up and owners wanna f us all! F’ing business. No wonder Nike pushing all their BS Kobe VI colorways. Ugly as sin! Lebrons, too! How can I forget Jordan AMD their OG 2011 retro lineup? Lockout looming , pump out more products so they can brace for no free advertising on the feet of their athletes. Booo!!!

European Basketball is gonna get a MEGA SHOT in the arm! It would be sad to see the NBA go but seeing LeBron, Mello, Wade, D-Howard, and CP3 playing on the same team in Greece would be pretty awesome! smh

@ConeyIslander wont happen only free agents can go overseas because FIBA respects NBA contracts

This situation is predominantly on the shoulders of the owners. If the league loses $1 billion it’s their own fault for creating the conditions in which the league’s woes began.

I’m sure SLAM wants no part of a lockout either.

ionmic: I don’t think you get it, if the CBA isn’t greenlit, then there ARE no contracts! NBA players can play wherever they want with no repercussions. The question is, what happens if there is a new CBA halfway through the season? What do players do if they’ve signed FIBA contracts and suddenly their NBA contract is valid again? THAT will be interesting.

I think it would be in FIBA’s best interest to get “disrespectful”! j/k
