Allen Iverson to Host Tourney With NBA Players in Las Vegas

The rosters aren’t set just yet, but according to Yahoo!, a bball tournament hosted by Allen Iverson that’ll feature some quality NBA talent will be going down in Las Vegas in mid-November: “Former NBA All-Star Allen Iverson is hosting the Las Vegas Superstar Challenge on Nov. 12-13, sources told Yahoo! Sports. The tournament includes four teams with captains, including Iverson, who will recruit players for their respective teams. NBA All-Stars who could participate include Kevin Durant, Amar’e Stoudemire and Paul Pierce, sources said. Iverson is expected to announce the participants for all four teams in Las Vegas next week. The winner of the Nov. 12 games at Thomas & Mack Center will play in a championship game the next day. The Nov. 12 games are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. ET to allow players to attend the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Marquez fight that evening. Iverson, 36, last played in the NBA for the Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers during the 2009-10 season. He briefly played in Turkey last season.”

I kind of miss watching AI playing the L. Damn.

They can not tell me that A.I. is not at least a helluva bench/role player…He should still be in the league…And I’m sure being an outcast helped him to put his ego in check…A.I. is my favorite ballplayer in the WORLD and I think he can still give at least 2 more solid seasons for a contender…

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

    i think he is done

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Nobody has ever disputed that Iverson would still be a helluva bench/role player, but every GM knows they would have a helluva time trying to get AI to accept that role, which would just cause helluva headaches that are helluva not worth it.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Why is my comment awaiting moderation?
There were no links, no cuss words, nothing….

  • stayweird38

    He’ll be back

  • Mark

AI is a career 41% shooter from the floor (even lower in the playoffs) and is the single most selfish player in the history of the NBA. He’s never won anything, except a court case or two, and is now getting what he deserves. He is irrelevant and among the dimmest bulbs to ever throw up an airball. But yes, he is SO STREET!

  • http://nba.com GP23

    ^ hasn’t won anything???…. erm
    ’97 ROY
    ’01 MVP
    4 scoring titles
    2 all-star MVPs

A ring does not always define a players legacy.. smh

  • achilles

if he would accept a bench role id like to see the bulls get him!!

  • Jeremy

@mark Stop being subliminal with the “he is SO STREET!”

You think people Can’t read between the lines?

would you call A.I. that to his face? Hell no

  • http://www.facebook.com/#!/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Be quite honest with you, he could start for the Lakers as a point. I know it sounds crazy, but if D.Fish can do it, A.I. definitely can

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I’d call AI “street” to his face, dude would probably give me a pound for that. lol
But what Mark REALLY wanted to say was “I hate that (racial epitaph). Blah blah blah THUG blah blah blah (racial epitaph)”….

  • Red Star

^^ God damn right!! AI is still one of the best.

  • MLK4Life

Best little man to ever play. Doesn’t need to take another jumpshot or cross another guy over. Legacy is sealed. Changed the game. Much to the chagrin of Stern. The anti-MJ. Mark, hope you get some of that hate out of your heart for your own sake.

  • Mark

I get it; if I don’t like AI I’m a racist; you really need to stop protecting yourself with that lame crutch; AI’s a punk; it has nothing to do with his race. Any semi-intelligent person recognizes that race is irrelevant; it’s the quality of the person that matters. And just to make you happy, I’ve despised the Celtics since ’61 and the Birdman is at the top of my list.

  • rhyzy

mark stop posting these idoitic comments

  • http://slamonline.com BossTerry

Love AI, but hes not coming back.. So many young pg in the L now, I don’t think any team will take the risk.. I hate to say it, but his 2nd “go-around” with the Sixers was very unimpressive and hard to watch.

  • http://slamonline.com Neitel#2

You know i had to say something about one of my top 5 favorite player, ranks 2nd in my list, ALL TIME!, second to Jordan of course..anyways, this is GREAT NEWS to hear!! that he will be balling, next to some players and this is a good way he can still show off that he got it..i would love for him to return to the L, but there has to be an GM or someone out there that is willing to trust him with the ball to make the right calls and make a club successful…man, i wish i was in las vegas to watch this game…I wanna see him balling somewhere! Go A.I!!!, your crossover moves has been beneficial to my own game and style, i can easily do the crossover you did on jordan, i’ve done it many times to opponents after studying it back and forth…it freaking works!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

This should do him good nice to see he still actually cares and is trying to get back in the league.

  • Drig

Isiah seems to be forgotten in the best little man discussions for some reason I cannot comprehend………..How do you guys define little btw?

  • http://www.slamonline.com house

    Muggsy= best little man ever!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Mark – Jerry West, is that you???

  • Yesse

I like BlackPhantom’s thinking. It sounds a bit crazy, but pretty awesome too!

  • http://www.twitter.com/lovequeenbee Bee Anderson

    I’ll be there! Hollaaaaaa

  • RUSS M

He may have not have gotten a ring, but for a guy his size to single-handedly lead a team to the championship round is a hell of an accomplishment. Yeah he took the L in that series, but anyone who considers that a complete failure just doesn’t get it.

40 bars was a pretty dope song. Granted, AI’s flow wasn’t the best, but it was still legit for a professional ball player.

  • Will Lee

i would rather take jason terry over AI. He’s done.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

There was never a more talented player. Hate fueled his hall of fame career.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Damn, AI fans are tripping. Best little bigman? most talented player? I guess y’all haven’t heard about Zeke and Stockton or heard about MJ, Bird, West, PMaravich and Wilt.

  • fruizm

    Mark is an idiot.

@BlackPhantom: there is a reason Derek Fisher is still in the league despite his age and declining skills. It’s the intangibles he brings to the Lakers that are so hard to find. Jason Kidd has them to, and it’s why Mark Cuban traded for him. Chauncey Billups has those intangibles as well. If AI brought that same kind of leadership and character, he’d never have had to play in Turkey, but instead he would have likely been on the roster of a team contending for a championship. Don’t get me wrong, I like Allen Iverson for the heart he has, but he was his own worst enemy man.

  • J

The NBA is not as exciting without Allen Iverson, he is an amazing talent. He is still more energetic, fearless and hungry than most of the players in the league today.
Shame on the NBA for not including him on their roster.
Still see many of his legendary #3 jerseys in arenas all over the country.

  • EtheKnickFan

Pound for Pound AI would have to be considered best lil man. The thing is he was never really considered a lil man by his peers in the league. Of all others; zeke, muggsy, etc only maybe zeke had entire upper echelon teams worried about stopping the smallest player on court. Plus AI played waaaaaaaay bigger than his frame would even dare suggest. If dude was MJ height/weight, with same game, he would be best player in the galaxy.Just picture this…..Phil Jackson telling friggin MJ and Scottie,”look we gotta find a way to stop this 5’11 145lb kid” MJ nods, accepting assignment, D’s up, crossed….ESPN highlight forever.

  • ai83

HE WILL COME BACK, YOU´LL SEE,NBA isn´t same without AI, Allen Iverson, only and the one, Still he can play at high level.

  • http://www.ontarget-graphics.com Sucka Free

@Mark if you don’t like AI it does not make you a racist. But if Hate of an ATHLETE and use racial undertones like He’s So Street. I can see how people would assume you are a racist. How does that relate to him as a Basketball Player.

Bottom line you can Hate on Iverson all you want, its a free country. AI is a Mega Star because despite all the hatred garnered toward him when he stepped on the court he was always the Best performer on the floor period!!!!!

Just for the record all that AI has to come of the bench BS is just that B.S.!!!!! Anyone who believes a player of AI’s skill level has to come of the bench is an IDIOT!!!!! I bet all those Memphis Grizzly fans were more than impressed with Mike Conley’s 14 for 47 performance against OKC he really took it to Westbrook like he deserved to start over a legend. The way he went 4 for 16 had 4 assist and 3 turnovers in that BIG GAME 7 was the perfect compliment to Z-Bo and Marc Gasol’s dominance in the paint. That really showed everyone why he got the nod over AI. LMAO!!!!!

  • http://www.ontarget-graphics.com Sucka Free

@ JTaylor21 No one is knocking Zeke him and AI are in the same category. John Stockton though I think not. I personally witnessed AI DOMINATE him in his prime. The same year he went to the finals and loss to the Bulls. He got his lunch taken twice when he played against Philly. Stockton was good, but he was not in the same league as Zeke and AI.

AI and Zeke were similar players in two different errors. AI was a better Athlete and scorer, but Zeke was a pure point guard!!! Zeke will get the nod from most because he won a Chip, but the three other Hall of Famers on his Team had a lot to do with that. It makes a big deference when between having Joe Dumars or Eric Snow as your back court mate. Not to mention D Rodman, Bill Lambier, Mahorn, John Sally. Mutumbo was the second best player on AI’s Championship team and he doesn’t even place with any of the starting five from the Bad Boys run, and he was a liability on the offensive side of the court.

AI was a more dominant force on the floor, he ruled the ENTIRE league for about 6 seasons. It was easy to see who was the best player on the floor on any given night when the Sixers played from 2000 – 2006. Zeke was never at any point the most dominant player in the game. Magic, Bird, were always better!!! Then came MJ and you can forget about it. If anybody out performed AI from 2000 – 2006 point them out to me please?

  • http://www.ontarget-graphics.com Sucka Free

@ achilles: If you are going to try to justify starting Keith Bogans and his 4 pts a game over AI then forget about it. He should play for someone that has better since than that!

AI and Derrick Rose in the back court however would be something to talk about. The only team that AI should even be considered as a possible bench player is Boston and San An. Any other team in the league AI would be an automatic upgrade at the one or the two.

No knock on Ray Allen but on skill level he might need to come of the Bench for AI. Ray is a better 3 point shooter but AI is a better passer, defender, mid range shooter, slasher and he will not fold in the Big Games. But the way Boston threw away there season on purpose last year I don’t think they really want to win anyway.

There are arguments that AI is the most talented little (6’2″ or under) man in the history of the NBA. Jerry West would get my vote, but AI, Zeke and Stockton can all be argued for. The one thing AI never had was that intangible leadership quality. IMO, that’s his biggest drawback, AI has never been a leader and in his last couple of stops in the NBA, he was more team distraction than anything else. Seeing how he played in Turkey, it seems clear that he’s no longer an NBA caliber player. I would be shoked if any team picked up AI, he’s not that aging superstar that can give you 10-20 great minutes and would help mentor a young PG. He is a past superstar that can help a team sell tickets and likely embarrass himself on the court and feign injury to bow out ‘gracefully’. Personally, I’d love to see AI in this tournament (which I’m not sure if he will play in or just host). But I don’t see him making any real contributions to any team.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

It would have been fun if, ala Bill Simmons, you got to watch the players “draft” each other fantasy league style.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

Zeke and Stockton were talented players, tough as nails and get much respect. But I will stand by my statement, no player was ever MORE talented than Allen Iverson. His talent transitioned into a career where no 6’0″ brother in the history of the NBA got more buckets than The Answer.

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

And if someone says he wasn’t a true point guard check all the All-Star games he racking up double digit assists and leading comebacks for the East anually! PLEASE!!! He WAS the East’s pg for a decade!!!

  • F Dash

Allen iverson is da single most exciting player I have ever watched. The upmost prolific scorere the games ever had. Has some of the best highlights in nba history. Plays at a high level in big games. Two all star mvp’s including almost single-handedly bringing the east back from a 20+pt 4th quarter deficit.. Jordan retired, A.I. Carried the league.. He is in my top 10 ever.

  • F Dash

Cross over king. They hated his move so much (after he crossed Mj up) they band it…. David Stern hated to giv A.i. Mvp but had no choice. Rookie of the yr, no 1 over pick, schick rookie game mvp, 4scoring titles, led the league in scoring, steals, and minutes played twice. Mvp, 2all star mvps, 2nd all time scoring avg in regular season, and playoffs only to mj… Scored 50+ twice in one playoff series.. Alll at 5’11 impressive

  • F Dash

@gameyomeweezy!! Exactly right… Allen has great assist numbers in all hi all star games. Best daam all star game. Ill never forget it. 9mins left to go in the 2001 nba all star game. West 94 east 73, and allen iverson took over, scored 15 4th qtr pts. Malbury hit the 3′s late, but a.i. Kept the east in it, and the east cameback and won. A.i. And malbury were heated rivaks at dat time. malbury said after that, ” wow he is a great player.”
