LeBron James Says Team USA Has to do a Better Job of Communicating

Lithuania is a solid squad, one that many thought had a decent chance of giving Team USA some decent competition. But still, after a 99-94 victory, nobody on Team USA is satisfied with only winning by 5, and several of the players admitted that there are vital improvements that need to be made. According to LeBron James, teammate-to-teammate communication would be a good place to start. Via the Sporting News: “If you listened long enough to the postgame discussions going on around Team USA’s 99-94 victory over Lithuania here at Olympic Park on Saturday, you might have gotten the idea that this is exactly how coach Mike Krzyzewski drew things up. In the tunnel near the court, players were talking about the benefits of a tight game, the way that trailing with seven minutes to play and having to fend off a determined and experienced opponent will prove beneficial down the line. … Lithuania shot 58.5 percent from the field, plucking the American defense with pick-and-rolls and well-executed cuts to the basket. Lithuania played most of the game without a center, but still, a whopping 50 of their points came in the paint. ‘We got to do a better job of communicating,’ James said. ‘At times, we did. But you have to, defensively, in order to read and react to certain situations, you have to talk things through. If we’re switching or we’re guarding the pick-and-roll or we’re bumping guys into the paint, we gotta do a better job of talking that through, which we will. We have done it in the past. We can do it. We’ll watch film and we’ll get better at it.’”

Geez, you win one championship and now all of a sudden you think you can criticize every one you play with.

  • Fab

    Hey Zabba, shut your mouth

  • 23

@Zabba, he’s a 3 time MVP who is in his prime…. I think he has the right to call out whoever he wants!

  • 23

LeBron can say whatever he wants. You get that privilege when your the best player in the world you know…

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

US has such pathetic interior defense, I’m legitimately concerned about Spain running a motion style offense.

  • oh nose

LBJ is currently best player in the world, he can criticize whomever he wants

  • Ben Ireland

He’s not crticizing, he said we… He’s pointing out their collective mistake, not selling out his team…

  • Aizen

Yeah, LBJ’s only the best player in the world, 3x MVP and reigning Finals MVP.

    His opinion doesn’t matter whatsoever.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Actually yes this year. They played them 2 ago in Barcelona. It was an exhibition. USA jumped to a huge lead early then screwed around and let Argentina get it within 6. But they totally dominated the game. Nice try though.

International teams seem to be more cohesive, everybody accepting their roles. It will take Team USA a few games to get that cohesiveness down.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

Canada? Lol ok. I think Lebron won’t win another title next year but he definitely is no bum and team USA is a beast(3 players on the team only made it cause of health), how’s Canada doing?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

No reason to argue with dude. You have to be a flaming pile of stupid to call LeBron a bum not even 3 months after he won a title.

  • http://slam flight9

hope spain wins it all… pls….

  • mask

Why is the usa logo shaped like a stealth bomber?

  • Rnz

@Jomomma , so you’re an american who moved to Canada and is rooting for argentina..oowwwkeeeeyyy

  • bdogg

bron did well! kb needs to get out of neutral…come on mamba..this is it for the olympics. i expect a big game..i understand he has played limited minutes but lets get this done!

  • L Dribble

Coach K definitely had a role in how close this was. Lithuania was getting open layups like it was a Mikan Drill – yet the two shot blockers that would have kept them out, Chandler and Davis, played 8 (only 1 foul) and 0 minutes respectively. Hmmmm.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Who said LeBron was Michael or even trying to be Michael? It’s not about being Michael or comparing them to the Dream Team. This team is a great one. LeBron is the best player on it. Everyone who’s been around this team in practice says the loudest voice that can be heard is his. Kobe is using these Olympics to get ready for one of his final attempts to win a championship, he’s not trying to run anything. It’s LeBron’s team. He made a statement about the entire team. No issue here. Some folks will never give LeBron his due.

  • LA Huey

Not sure what the disagreement is here. Lots of defensive breakdowns that game. Had to be due to poor game planning or communication on defense. LeBron addresses the latter in reference to the entire team.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Am I the only one that one that wants to give Lithuania credit?
    They balled!
That team had no business hanging with the U.S. squad. No business.
They played amazing defense and a really smart offense.
Also, if Šarūnas Jasikevičius can play like that still, he shoulda never left the NBA. Dude played a great game.
I hope the U.S. doesn’t lose to Spain. Argentina… Not worried about.

he really liked jasikevicius’ game when he was in the NBA, but i don’t he ever figured out how to be consistently effective for his teams. his NBA journey was like Rudy Fernandez.
btw, USA’s achilles heels has been their lack of interior D. it’s basically the exhaust vent on the Death Star: there’s a very minimal chance that opposing team can hone in and attack that weak point, but if they can, the Death Star can obliterated.
Lithuania figured out how to attack it and showed that it’s possible to take down this giant. best believe all the ewoks in the world will rejoice if team USA lose.

Ablbie1Kenobi with the dope Star Wars reference. Nice.
