Grinnell College’s Jack Taylor Drops 109 Points in a Game

by Bill DiFilippo / @bflip33

Jack Taylor is at it again.

The sophomore guard for D-III Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, who famously scored 138 points in a game last year, dropped triple digits again yesterday, as he scored 109 points against NIAC Crossroads College in a 173-123 victory.

Taylor’s stat line for the night was a cartoonish 109 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and no fouls in 29 minutes on 35-70 shooting, including 24-48 from behind the arc and 15-17 from the free throw line. As a team, Grinnell went 59-125 from the field and 30-79 from downtown.

This kind of performance is a product of Grinnell’s controversial system, which encourages the team to hoist up a bevy of shots in an attempt to score as many points as possible.

From The Des Moines Register:

Only Taylor’s landmark night last year and Clarence “Bevo” Francis’ old mark of 113 in 1954 stand ahead of him.

“Tonight, we just wanted my shot to kind of come in the flow of the offense with catch- and-shoot type plays,” Taylor said.

Even with multiple defenders eyeing him, Taylor kept finding the bottom of the basket.

“For stretches tonight, it really was just him, the ball and the basket,” Grinnell associate coach David Arseneault Jr. said.

He could have done more damage, but Taylor departed with 5:32 to play, his teammates waiting for him on the bench with more hugs and high-fives — just like last November.

Taylor is averaging 90 points per game this year for the 2-0 Pioneers, as he dropped 71 points in the team’s opener last Friday.

This blows my mind.. I was feeling myself when I dropped 39 in high school. Now not so much

  • spit hot fiyah

please transfer to an ACC school so we can see what u are really made of

  • Slick Ric

Well damn, he’s the G.O.A.T, isn’t he? lol

  • Dfrance

I’d have to watch one of these games in its entirety to really grasp what happens here.

Jack Taylor is probably a pretty good ballplayer. He can obviously shoot the ball and the college games favors shooters. He’d probably fair pretty well running off screens at a D1 school. But for basketball purists, his rep is tarnished due to this gimmicky system employed by Grinnell.

    90ppg. lol

Dude dropped 138 last year and is still on a DIII team. I’d say there is a reason for that.

  • north

Watch the games. The guy can shoot. He can shake off defenders as well. To me this is “D1 schools wouldn’t look at me so I’m never going to get a fair shake at anything… F it, I’m shooting it.” His team mates and competition are terrible. No doubt this kid needs to be at least a level up. I’m sure he would LOVE to be. He shot 50% his team 43%. From 3 he was 50%, his team 19%. Why not get in history books since his DIII school isn’t going to get him looks from any legit basketball after this?

  • Shooting Guard

Saw it on yahoo sports. I love how he thanks his teammates after the game. Very thoughtful

  • Dfrance

Well its the schools system for one player to take the majority of the shots. Some plays he doesn’t even cross halfcourt he just waits for an outlet and shoots a 3. Of course the highlight reel will show the baskets he scored against defenders.

He may not even want to play better comp. I’d have to imagine that at least a D2 school has reached out to him about transferring at this point.

    loool. that is just ridiculous.

  • bike

I don’t know what you call it when a player score 109 points and the team scores 173 but it’s not basketball. Its. Just. Not.

  • LP @ThisisEther

    averaging 90 a game.

  • Sizzle

I am not sure you watched the games I have seen. Watch the first 2 1/2 mins of the below link. In plain English. It’s awful basketball.

  • Harvey

He poured in 53 during the first nine minutes of the second half.

THAT made my head spin off completely.

  • LP @ThisisEther

The guy is a below average player. He has a bright green light with teammates that are DYING to get him the ball. Its Incredible to score these big points, but I’m not impressed. I’ve seen so many guys that look 10xs better when they have an unconscious green light…….

  • shawnkemp4prez

Shout out to Clarence “Bevo” Francis

  • That Dude

Some of you real salty. Dude can play. I don’t care what level of competition he is playing against. If it’s 5 on 5 and he scores more than 100 (twice), he’s got some game.

  • Caboose

    DEAR LORD that was painful….

  • pposse

i see the future and the NBA is not a part of Jack Taylor’s

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

did you watch the highlights? the only reason i didn’t think that was a high school game is because i was told it wasn’t.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i doubt it. he went to Grinnell for a reason.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk
  • Enigmatic

I’m surprised people are still surprised whenever a Grinnell player does this.

  • playa

    This guy again??

  • playa
  • idk

maybe he should go play d2 now since he averaging 90ppg in d3

  • BugEyes

I would like to see him play d1

  • Freight

Dude why don’t they foul him hard. If someone got 10 points on me I’m gonna discipline for even trying to score

  • TBRK

seems like poor man’s Jimmer Fridette

  • cgeorge22

i just wanna point out, that converse banner is annoying as hell.

  • Caboose

High school? Sh!t, that looks like 8th grade AAU.

  • Ugh

I’d like to see you play DIII, wisea$#.

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

All any of those players over 5″10′??

  • Dash Jones

Regardless of the system the dude is nice

  • montadaboss

this guy doesn’t even go back and play d, he just sits on the offense side, if i were his teammate i’d be pissed. this is a joke so is his coach for letting him play like this

  • montadaboss

just sits on the 3point line

  • jfame23

The way grinnell college plays is an insult to James Naismith and the game of basketball. Jack Taylor is a clown mocking the sport. Watch the video of his games, its NOT REAL BASKETBALL

  • Guest

His coach let him shoot 70 times in 29 minutes of play….i’m 6’4 200 lbs and 21 yrs old can i get a spot on the squad?!

  • 360

    90 ppg tho…lol

  • Dfrance

Lol, just trying to give him some kind of credit. lol

  • BugEyes

No I actually want to see him play in d1. I would watch every game. I think he would do good, like the dude from Oklahoma state idk if he graduated or not.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Jack Taylor is not good enough to get any minutes on a D1 team. He wouldn’t get his shot off, and he sure wouldn’t be able to do any of the other basketball related things a D1 player is expected to do….mainly play competent defense.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

people don’t even kind of understand that system out there. and they just react to these things in relation to what they are traditionally used to seeing on a court.

  • bringbackthesonics

I couldn’t watch past the missed fastbreak layup, it’s just painful.

  • BugEyes

Idk Iook at keaton Paige that was on Oklahoma state

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

are you just saying this because Paige is short and white? first of all, Paige is actually a PG, not an undersized SG. And he’s actually a solid defensive player at the D1 level.
Jack Taylor is an undersized 2 guard, who literally doesn’t even cross half court on defense.

  • BugEyes

I’m comparing there style of play, both can shoot and handle pretty good, and in college teams play a lot of zone to cover up there defensive deficiencies, so you don’t have to be the world’sgreatest defender, I think he could do it, like a Marshall Henderson type player. people said lillatd was garbage because he went to a small school look at him.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

do you not know anything about DIII?
Weber State (where Lillard went) doesn’t even play DIII schools in their preseason warm up games.
DIII schools typically don’t even recruit. They don’t even offer athletic scholarships for the most part. Jack Taylor goes to Grinnell because he is not good enough to play at a higher level.

  • BugEyes

Know how hard it is to get recruited by a d1 school, the only school who wanted lillard was weber state. I played with some really good players in high school, and they had to send in tapes to colleges. I think he could do it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

He tried to get a D1 scholarship. Couldn’t. Went to Mercersburg Academy where he averaged 14 pts and 7 assists, then he blew out his knee. Tore his ACL and MCL. after that he tranferred to UW-La Crosse

“Taylor sat out his first season at UW-La Crosse as he recovered from his knee injury.[8] In his freshman season in 2011–12, he averaged 7.0 points in 13.4 minutes in 27 games as a reserve. He made 39.4 percent of his three-pointers. After one season at UW-La Crosse, Taylor transferred to Division III Grinnell after he learned of the school’s unique offensive style—known as the Grinnell System—that relied on shooting as many three-pointers as possible. Taylor thought it fit his playing style.[2][9] Grinnell had led all levels of NCAA in scoring for 17 of the past 19 seasons, and their 126.2 points per game in 2003–04 ranked second in history.[10]”

He’s not a D1 talent. Never has been. And definitely no longer can be.

Wow. Finally a news outlet not just running with a headline. That’s pretty sad man, I don’t know what else to say. SLAM should post this article.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the worst part is that this article will be ignored because it kills the whole intrigue of the story.

  • Dfrance

Bout to down vote my comments bigging him up. lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

  • Dfrance

Thing is, its his coaches idea. lol

  • BugEyes

I’m not saying he is an all American for duke scoring 20. I think he could make it as a back up player for a d1 wether it’s a big school or small school like a weber state or saints Mary’s comes tomind. I would watch. scoring a 138 on any level is hard, even at a high school level

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

did you read the link i sent you or nah?

  • BugEyes

Just did lol been brainwashed by ESPN highlights, so basically he cherrypickes the whole time
