Brooklyn Nets Trade for Marcus Thorton (UPDATE)

UPDATE: According to multiple reports, a deal in principle has been reached between the Nets and Kings:

Sacramento Kings guard Marcus Thorton is on his way to Brooklyn, according to Yahoo! Sports. In exchange for Jason Terry and Reggie Evans, the Nets would be acquiring Thorton:

Sacramento and Brooklyn were still discussing the possibility of a future conditional draft pick to the Nets, league sources said, but the structure of a deal is in place.

The Nets’ deal with Sacramento doesn’t preclude them from also completing a deal for the Los Angeles Lakers’ Jordan Hill using the Nets’ Disabled Player Exception, sources said.

Thornton’s contract has two years and nearly $17 million remaining through the 2014-15 season. Terry, 36, has $10.7 million left on his deal, including $5.4 million next season.

Brooklyn has discussed a deal involving Terry for Cleveland’s Jarrett Jack, too, but sources say that is an unlikely scenario based on the length of Jack’s contract, which guarantees a total of $12.6 million in the final two years of his deal through the 2015-16 season. The Cavaliers are interested in getting out of Jack’s deal, and would try to move Terry to a third team, league sources said.

The Nets’ $5.25 million Disabled Player Exception can be used in a trade or free-agent transaction until March 10 and they can use a portion of it to absorb the remaining $3.5 million on Hill’s expiring contract.

Thorton prolly happy, both vets sad.. Evans wouldve been mad useful for BK in playoffs tho – i guess they really have push for JHill now

  • the rain

I cant believe that bum JT still has 10 mil + left

nets never really used evans in the right way, that probably wouldn’t have changed on the playoffs. prokhorov taking on thornton’s deal makes it seem like he officially doesn’t give a s#!t. unless that was not already official

Thornton is an underrated guy. If he’s given some burn, he could surprise some people.

Sad to see Wedgie go, even though he became useless in the rotation without Brook Lopez. I’m surprised at the size of Thornton’s contract and so I guess we can’t expect much from that future pick. Thornton is a hell of an upgrade over Anderson though in the starting line-up. Hope he can do for us what he did in Sacto on the regular. Anybody wearing 23 gets my benefit of the doubt.

Reggie compliments Brook. Without Brook and the defensive attention he draws Reggie becomes a liability. Together it was a successful fit.

he is also super one dimensional and doesn’t play D at all. he probably has one of the worst contracts in the league. he can catch fire like once every 4 weeks though

i’m with Caboose here. he’s not the guy he looked like a few years ago, but he is exactly what Jason Terry was supposed to be, he’s just not a 35 year old corpse in high socks. And 8 mill a year is a little bit high on most teams and in most situations, but in Brooklyn, he’s got the best contract out of everyone lol.

  • spit hot fiyah

well the contract is relatively good in that sense. but still, 16 mill for this year and the next (plus luxury taxes which makes it even worse) for a guy that averages 8 points on 38% fg and gives u basically nothing else is still pretty terrible.

i get the point of it though, hopefully he find his form (still only like 26) and gives them a much needed scoring spark in the back court that was supposed to be provided by terry. they are just swinging at this point trying to hit something

  • spit hot fiyah

my initial point was, i don’t see how someone who avg 8 points and is considered a scorer and shoots below 32% from 3 can be considered underrated. i don’t know if u back caboose on that point. the potential is obviously there since he has been much more productive int he past. but at this point he looks more like a gunner who lack efficiency

do you blame them for swinging though? and money talks aside, who has the better assets after the trade? Kings with Terry/Evans or Nets with Thornton? If money isn’t a priority (it isn’t), then i totally support this trade. i’m going to post you some figures on how much money Mikhail Prokhorov is worth in comparison to other owners….

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

oh he’s definitely a gunner who lacks efficiency. but he’s not the guy he’s been this season, if you judge him from this year alone, he’s “underrated” — but we all know what he is. its just about whether we all agree that he’s worth what he costs.

i absolutely don’t blame them for swinging. terry is done. i always liked evans a lot though. that dude has shown that he can have a real impact on a playoff series, but they have not been using him anyways.

  • spit hot fiyah

i don’t think he is worth that money for what he gives u at this point so we will have to disagree. i don’t think he is who we thought he was

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehh i agree that he’s not worth 8 mill a season, but i just don’t think it matters in Brooklyn. He’s not an asset to brag about by any means, but he’s worth more than what they gave up to get him. And he can’t get any worse.

  • jrandz

And the Kings get clownier. Really building a serious team with these new additions. *Rolls eyes*.

  • Max

Reggie Evans can win u a series, ask the Clips…

Hmmm, he looks chubby as hell on the BK announcement page.
Please don’t let nobody tell em where Junior’s is at!!!!!

  • niio thompson

Anyone else that watches BK games wondering why AK47 doesn’t get more burn? Are they still monitoring his minutes? Every time he steps on the floor some thing good happens

  • Caboose

I remember when Thornton first came to Sac, he had an incredibly honeymoon period where he was dropping 20 a game with game winners. He’s talented and has been totally misused this year in the name of developing McLemore. Which I can only assume is for the Kings to redeem themselves from Thomas Robinson.

    Better management better coaching.

  • Max

    That’s just silly lol.
