Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart Responds to Flopping Allegations

by Bill DiFilippo / @bflip33

Oklahoma State’s star guard Marcus Smart has built up a reputation as a bit of a flopper, which is something the sophomore does not enjoy.

While Smart is unquestionably one of the nation’s best college basketball players, his flopping has been a main focus for some of his critics, most recently his “double flop” against Iowa State on Monday night.

However, in a recent interview with ESPN, Smart didn’t deny that he flops, saying ”I’ve probably built up a little reputation, and I’m not questioning that, but I’m not the only one flopping. Every team and every player does it to make sure you get the call.” He also expressed his dissatisfaction with what he called inconsistent officiating.

From ESPN:

One reason for Smart’s dissatisfaction lately is what he considers inconsistency with officiating. He said the emphasis on handchecking rules, which went into effect prior to the season, has played a significant factor.

“It’s so inconsistent,” Smart said about the new rules. “We have no idea what to expect. And as a player, it messes with your mind.

“It’s incredible how inconsistent the new rules have been. If they call it on one end, they have to call it on the other end. I don’t blame it on anyone. It’s a big adjustment for the refs also. They’re learning just like us.”

The good news for Smart is that he’s in the middle of a monster season. Even with this mini-”controversy” looming over his head, the Texas native is averaging 17.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.

slightly disappointment in smart. i still really like him and see him as a very good prospect. but his improvement hasn’t been big at all. he has cut down on the turnovers but doesn’t really shoot the ball better, but shoots a lot of 3s nonetheless. still looking like a top 7 lock in the draft.

that double flop in the link is epic

Athletes should always be ashamed to resort to flopping.

So, Marcus? How about the inconsistency honoring the game by playing it fairly? You know, those dramatic and dishonest reactions to fouls that didn’t occur? You’re a disgrace to the game and to your fellow players. You should be ashamed because it makes the whole team look bad.. I hope to see fines being introduced for faking contact on the court. It wastes time and it’s not fair to players who ARE playing the game with dignity and respect for their fellow players. You’re such a loser for this behavior.. so is anyone else who engages in “flopping”. Grow up.. can’t wait to see you get thrown out of a game for it, maybe that’ll wake you up. Talent like yours shouldn’t be wasted like this.
