Rookie Challenge ’10 Teams Announced

by Ryne Nelson

The Rookies will be going to school. As if the Rookie Challenge wasn’t already lopsided enough (sophomores are 8-2 all time), every soph in this year’s game is averaging over 30 mpg and, of the 361 combined games they’ve played in ’09-10, they’ve started a total of 346 games. Only Danilo Gallinari isn’t getting top-3 minutes (he’s fourth).

By contrast, the Rookie Team is without a center, with 6-10 SF Jonas Jerebko being its tallest player. Only three rookies average over 30 mpg (Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings and Stephen Curry).

While the rookies should experience annihilation, it’ll be an important game for Kings fans, who have not seen a rookie play in the Rookie Challenge since 1998 (Michael Stewart). The last time a Kings player participated in any All-Star Weekend event was in 2004 when Brad Miller and Peja Stojakovic were members of the Western Conference All-Star team. It’s been a while…

The head coaches will be the lead assistants from the All-Star Game coaching staffs, which will be determined by the best record in each conference through games played January 31. The Rookie Challenge will be televised on Friday, February 12 at 9 p.m. ET on TNT.

At halftime, of course, Eric Gordon and DeMar DeRozan (who, coincidentally, didn’t make the Rookie Team) will compete in the Slam Dunk-In.

    Will be an interesting game

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.27 at 12:03 pm
The Rooks are going to get absolutely killed in the post.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: Jan.27 at 12:04 pm
Looks like a fun game to me.

  • baller23 Posted: Jan.27 at 12:05 pm
    co sign with TADOne.

  • nastierthanu Posted: Jan.27 at 12:09 pm
Steph curry will show something he’s talented and patient. Final score 165 to 133 sophs

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Jan.27 at 12:12 pm
I wonder if EG will be playing…

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Jan.27 at 12:13 pm
… and it’s too bad Wade and Dwight won’t be coaching this year.

  • Orlando Woolridge Posted: Jan.27 at 12:17 pm
Blair has his work cut out for him for sure. I hope to get a heavy dose of Evans vs. DRose though.

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Jan.27 at 12:23 pm
I didnt bother to check numbers to see whoactually “deserves” it more, but seeing as its an ASG i dont see why Casspi, Dejuan or Jerebko are in it over DeRozan.

  • wassup Posted: Jan.27 at 12:40 pm
    no derozan?

  • nbk Posted: Jan.27 at 12:43 pm
I am more upset that Lawson didn’t make it. a rookie who is helping his team win is surely more important then a rookie doing less on a losing team (jeberko)

  • xiaonan Posted: Jan.27 at 12:57 pm
    no suspense there

  • fredd Posted: Jan.27 at 12:58 pm
Jerebko, Gibson ?! ooch … yes, and no ” lawson ” … sux
    glad for Blair though

  • JoeMaMa Posted: Jan.27 at 1:09 pm
Boing, the Rookie/Soph game is less “ASG-fan selectioned” and more merit based. Casspi and Blair are having much more productive years, and even Jerebko is getting more done. This is on account of the Raps brining Derozan along slowly…slowly enough that he gets little burn or opportunity to shine. Too bad though…I see where you’re coming from: Derozan would destroy the rims in that game.

  • ball4life Posted: Jan.27 at 1:19 pm
    Rose Vs. Jennings

  • Adam Fleischer Posted: Jan.27 at 1:28 pm
Nine potential all-stars on the Sophomores?

  • underdog Posted: Jan.27 at 1:29 pm
Too bad Ty Lawson didn’t make the taem. At least Blair is in.

  • Vikturus Posted: Jan.27 at 1:34 pm
You guys who downtalk Jerebko haven’t watched any Pistons game this year, the guy is playing great, and so is Casspi, and both of ‘em have become fan favourites in their towns. Don’t hate on them. Lawson should be in the mix as well though.

  • Cizzo Posted: Jan.27 at 1:38 pm
Well selected teams! Should be exciting!

  • martin Posted: Jan.27 at 1:41 pm
lawson getting in will make the team 2/3 guards…

  • mj23 Posted: Jan.27 at 1:41 pm
They need to fly in Rubio for the rookie/soph game. I ain’t seen nothin from that cat yet.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Jan.27 at 1:51 pm
Yeah, Adam. You could make a case for some of the sophomores right now. I think at least five of ‘em will be sure fire All-Stars during their career.

  • Nbk Posted: Jan.27 at 2:09 pm
It’s the rookie sophomore game — there is no defense, position shouldn’t matter

  • J-RO Posted: Jan.27 at 2:21 pm
i wonder if fans voted on this one…..
BLake Griffin would have been the top vote getter.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Jan.27 at 2:32 pm
I think if fans voted, Blake would definitely be in the game. Not the top getter, though…

  • J-RO Posted: Jan.27 at 2:38 pm
Ok Maybe not the top getter but would have recieved more votes than the ones who deserve it more…

  • jumpman3224 Posted: Jan.27 at 2:47 pm
The rookies will def. get blasted in the post, but it’s not like this game is usually much for half court sets. I think Jennings and Evans will do plenty of damage for the rookies.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers Posted: Jan.27 at 2:47 pm
Im fu(king stunned on the quality of the 2008 rookie class, one of deepest ever?

  • slamfan4life Posted: Jan.27 at 2:48 pm
hahaha wow the Rookies are gonna get KILLED Happy to see Jonas and Taj on there, low draft picks that really worked their asses off and earned this honor I hope Rose makes the All-Star Game aswell……..

  • d.j. Posted: Jan.27 at 3:16 pm
wow m i the only one picking the rookies to actually win this one ? just watch…

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.27 at 3:37 pm

Damn the rookies are small. They gonna get killed

  • Th3_R3al_Chris Posted: Jan.27 at 5:48 pm
I think the Rookies might steal this one.

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.27 at 5:48 pm
Also, Buddinger and DeRozan should be in there in terms of excitement

  • lucas Posted: Jan.27 at 5:57 pm
    Where’s Wes Mathews?

  • marcus Posted: Jan.27 at 7:52 pm
Ha ha, blame it on blake

  • In-N-Out Lucas Posted: Jan.27 at 8:43 pm
This should be interesting since the Sophomores are just going to plain OWN!

  • J Posted: Jan.27 at 10:34 pm
seriously i’m rooting for the rooks to win.

  • Mack Posted: Jan.27 at 11:59 pm
Rooks r going small, someone bout to get dunked on

  • spirow Posted: Jan.28 at 12:00 am
no derozan or lawson is dissapointing . . . look at flyns minutes and derozans and then do your average. . . heck if i played on minnesota or nj i’d average more then 15 a game . . . like seriously?

  • Joel O's Posted: Jan.28 at 12:44 am
That is some Soph team indeed. They’ve got to rank with one of the deepest classes ever. Where’s Derozan??

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.28 at 1:59 am
Man, DeRozan and Buddinger are BOTH good enough by a mile to make the team. What is going on?

  • Ders Posted: Jan.28 at 2:16 am
Okay, Lawson is allright, there are enough guards there, and all of them are better than Ty, but in need of forwards…. isn’t DeROZAN a SF???? Please tell me why he isn’t on the list! First, if the best rookies should be on the Rookie-team, DeRozan should be there. Second, if they want some show in the game, they could use some show-players. DeRozan, DeRozan, DeRozan…… and yeah, it will be funny to watch when the dunk-in begins. EG will come from the bench and on the court. DeRozan will just come out of nowhere…..

  • serevei Posted: Jan.28 at 3:01 am
good to see kevlar kev love in there

  • Lazaruz Posted: Jan.28 at 3:11 am
:( i want thabeet! 2nd pick should be auto in rookie challenge :@

  • melvin ely Posted: Jan.28 at 3:16 am
eric gordon and derozan not being in there is–are you ready?–a TRAVESHAMOCKERYFARCE. I win.

  • European Idiot Posted: Jan.28 at 6:34 am
Loads of people dissing Jerebko here, for no real reason. Do you really think that DeRozan deserves it more than a guy that always defends the opposing teams best 3/4 man, can stretch the floor and is a great hustle player? JJ have done more than DD this year, there is no way around that fact.

  • Vikturus Posted: Jan.28 at 7:14 am
European Idiot is right. And in the games against each other (not that they play the same position) JJ has had better games then Demar.. Sure he’s not the highlight machine Demar is, but he’s actually topped nba.com’s top 10 plays once! I think the most deserving guys has got the spots.. I don’t know much about Taj Gibson though, but i believe he leads rookies in rebounding and that’s something, right? (Or is Blair the leader?) Can’t judge him because i’ve seen to little of his game.

  • Starchild Posted: Jan.28 at 7:34 am
the rookies are going to get demolished! i’m talking by atleast 20!

  • Laumol Posted: Jan.28 at 10:30 am
@mj23 Yeah! Get Rubio a ticket to Dallas to play with the Rooks. Or maybe another game altogether: pre-Rooks vs. Rookies. Everyone from the current draft that’s playing in Europe right now (Tyreke evans would have been eligible last year for this) and the best of the highschool and college kids that are already in the mockdrafts top 10. That could be a cool game.

  • Wayno Posted: Jan.28 at 3:55 pm
Dude, Jonas earned his spot plain and simple. He’s averaging more ppg, rpg, the same apg and spg and is shooting a better percentage from the floor. On top of that, as mentioned above, he’s gaurding the leagues top 2′s 3′s and/or 4′s on a nightly basis. DeRozen may have higher ceiling as a player, but Jerebko his outplayed him by a longshot so far this season.

  • Sam Raphael Chadwick Posted: Jan.28 at 5:29 pm
Steph Curry will have fun compteing in this and the NBA 3-Point shoot out at least I hope he does. Read my artice about him on my NBA page :)

  • niQ Posted: Jan.28 at 11:58 pm
i’m actually sad DeRozan didn’t make the team…

  • jfree Posted: Jan.29 at 10:41 am
i love these match ups …except for in the post.. its going to be hell for the rookies
