‘Lockout League’ Set to Include Over 40 NBA Players

With the NBA’s start date quickly approaching and now new deal set in place, it’s looking unlikely that players will have a chance to participate in training camp and/or preseason games. As a result, Impact Basketball is organizing the “lockout league,” which will include a variety of NBAers, including Chauncey Billups, John Wall, Zach Randolph, Stephen Jackson and others.

The NY Times has the details:

A swarm of Knicks, Clippers and Rockets players will soon descend on Las Vegas for two weeks of intense competition — only without coaches, contracts or the imprimatur of the N.B.A. The jerseys will be unfamiliar and the games fairly meaningless. But for the first time since June, N.B.A. players will be competing against N.B.A. players in something resembling an N.B.A.-caliber league. The site will be the Impact Basketball gymnasium, about two miles from the Strip. The unofficial commissioner will be Joe Abunassar, a longtime trainer of N.B.A. players. More than 40 players, locked out of N.B.A. facilities because of a labor standoff, have committed to play. Chauncey Billups, John Wall, Zach Randolph and Stephen Jackson will be among the headliners. ’This is an effort on our part to get these guys as ready for training camp as they can get, without going to training camp,’ Abunassar said in a phone interview. ‘That’s the allure of it.’ The tournament has been named the Impact Basketball Competitive Training Series. You could call it the Lockout League.

“As many as eight teams, featuring seven or eight players each, will play daily starting Sept. 12. The series will end with two days of playoffs, with a championship game Sept. 23. Games will be officiated and played under N.B.A. rules, albeit with 10-minute quarters and without coaches barking from the benches. The plan is to sell tickets (about 500 a day, with proceeds donated to charity) and to stream the games live on the Internet.

Billups will probably be joined by his Knicks teammates Shawne Williams and Iman Shumpert. Another roster will feature at least four Rockets: Kyle Lowry, Chuck Hayes, Chase Budinger and Courtney Lee. Mo Williams and DeAndre Jordan of the Clippers will form the core of a team, with hopes that their teammate Blake Griffin, last season’s rookie of the year, will join them. Others who have committed include J.J. Hickson of the Kings, Eric Maynor of the Thunder, Al Harrington of the Nuggets, Jermaine O’Neal of the Celtics and Jared Dudley of the Suns. Box scores will be kept. Standings will be posted.

The gluten-free league.. They tell you its great, and just as good as what you’re used to, but something is definitely missing.. And @ Max- Unavoidable. Stephen Jax + J. O’neal – Coaches, or any disciplinarian= Just that.

Some people are downright spoiled rotten. Gluten free? This is a f*cking McDonalds appearing in the desert when you think you may starve to death. I love basketball in all its forms and I’ll be watching this for sure.

Juks: Been watching the FIBA Americas and the FIBA Europe. Great watching really good world PG’s out there like Serbia’s Teodosic(dimes!), Brazil’s Huertas, Argentina’s Prigioni, Carlos Arroyo, Tony Parker, Caldedron and Rubio, Croatia’s Popovic and even Vasquez doing his thing. Individually, don’t think they could f(ck with CP3, DRose, John Wall and the rest but as playing Euro ball, they are fun to watch.

    What up Philo

  • IDOT

They need to do like the NFL have meetings everyday and get a deal done. They gone mess around and end like the NHL and fans are going to stop dropping like flies and its gone take them a long time to get fans back.

This Lockout League is TMac’s fault.

Word Nick, the NBA players are killing it. Watched Gasol tear Portugal a new one, sometimes Pau just gets fancy for fun out there, they had no one to guard him.
Vasquez has really, truly impressed me. He’s a legit floor leader.

  • http://sjkfdlf.com Jukai

And Navarro really needs to be in the NBA again. He’s way too good.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Surprised JCN never made an impact with Memphis because dude is a flat out scorer. That floater he’s got is money. Might be little undersized for an NBA 2 guard and not such a great ballhandler for a point guard but sheeeit the man is pure buckets. Vasquez is killing it. Wonder how him and Josh Selby will work out this year in Memphis.
On a different note, it’s refreshing watching the international passing game esp Europe ball and Argentina. The ball moves so much. Extra pass to a wide open shooter who makes another extra pass to an EVEN more wide open shooter. Just about everyone can shoot the three. Nice change from the iso-heavy NBA. Also interesting how much complaining and theatrics you can get away with in international hoops. Joey Crack woulda T’d up the entire continent!

  • http://dsjkflf.com Jukai

Nick: Actually, JCN was pretty good his first year in Memphis, he had 10-3-3 or something in about 25 minutes. His playing time and his role on the team was just so inconsistent that he went back to Spain. I saw him being a great starter in the league, but the money was too good.
On the same subject: WTF is up with Rubio?

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Navarro went back to Spain because he was on a bad team, and his family missed home. He would not have been a starter on a good team anyway, because he is not a real point guard, and he is not guarding NBA 2′s effectively. Teodosic is the best PG prospect out of the Euro teams, only 24 and 6’5. His court vision is uncanny, talking about just passing, he could go toe to toe with any of the NBA guards.

if this is what it takes for professional basketball to be played in Vegas it makes it hard for me (and my neighbors) to hate the lockout. that said, i hate the lockout…

  • Jesse

not on topic but I was hoping the slamonline community could help me out… I’m moving to Phoenix and I was wondering if anyone knew a few good places to play pick up games…thx

  • http://dsjkflf.com Jukai

AllBall: Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Barcelona also offer Navarro like, 12 million more dollars than he was making?

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

He signed for 15 million euro’s (23 million) over five years. Could he have made more than that in the NBA? I don’t know, probably.

This is Shawn Kemps last chance me thinx.
