Carmelo Anthony’s Breakthrough

by Marcel Mutoni

Of the three superstars in the famed 2003 Draft Class, Carmelo Anthony had played the role of the forgotten man for a long time. While his draftmates (LeBron and Wade) experienced Playoff success almost immediately, it took him Anthony six years to get a taste of winning in the postseason.

Now, as he leads his squad into the Western Conference Finals for the first time in two decades, there’s no denying him – or his place – among the game’s elite.

From the Denver Post:

Anthony is living his Kevin Garnett moment. The playoffs had been an albatross for the Boston Celtics star while he was a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves. It took eight tries for Garnett to get out of the first round. But when he finally did, he took the magic carpet ride all the way to the Western Conference finals. Anthony’s sixth time has been his charm. The pixie dust hasn’t faded, and he has ridden this fairy tale to his first conference finals.

“I really don’t know how to feel right now,” Anthony said. “I don’t want to get too excited, but I’d be lying to you if I said I’m not excited. The Western Conference finals is a big accomplishment for myself and for the Nuggets, obviously. We worked hard to get here. I worked extremely hard to get where I’m at today. I’m going to continue working hard throughout these playoffs.”

His coach, George Karl, has become his biggest fan. What was once a strained relationship has smoothed. Both are enjoying the ride. “This is a great day for Melo,” Karl said. “Making all-NBA is real. Advancing to the Western Conference finals is real.”

Melo and the Nuggets will face their biggest challenge to date in a few days, but for now, it’s time to enjoy what they’ve done, and how far along they have come.

Hmm, i’m not agree to compare KG and Melo… Nuggets in the last 6 years are way better than the T-Wolvs whn KG played. And KG is way better than Melo as well.

  • Bear

I think Billups was also responsible for all this success

  • ABIMATOR

    Billups 4 MVP! oh wait it’s Lebroom…

    Ahhh. this is feels GRR-ATE

  • AlbertBarr

KG way better than Melo? I hope your talkin about defense only…

  • AlbertBarr

oh…you must have been referring to KG’s ability to crawl around like a dog and growl on defense being better than Carmelo’s

  • AlbertBarr

I also dont agree with the KG melo comparison cause Garnett got his success by switching teams…Melo hung around/survived and his team made good moves…Plus Melo doesnt act insane on a regular basis…

Cornrows are overrated. Maybe AI should drop em and start winning again?

  • riggs

KG IS better than melo, and this is coming from someone who thinks melo is better than bron so…kg > bron? only in my head.

  • Syk

bakers-dozen i think AI dropped them at the all star break if i’m not mistaken.

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

Chauncey>AI. I’m doing a Hoops Manifesto blog on that subject tonight (I’m such a shameless plugging shill!!).

  • Michael

How exactly did Lebron experienced playoff success almost immediately?

  • http://www.hoopsmanifesto.blogspot.com Jeff Fox

I actually just wrote about LeBron’s playoff experience on my blog – he has won more games and series throughout his first 6 years in the League than Jordan did.

    Stern loves him.
    Stern hates Melo and Denver.

Jeff, could you plug your plug some more? Please, really, I don’t think it’s in every post yet.

  • http://slamonline.com DONONE

    HELL YEEEEAH!!! MELO FOR PRESIDENT!!

  • Rashaan

I am definitely happy for Melo. I think it started with the Olympics. He has stepped up his game and his defense.

I got to give it to him, he’s playing great. As of now, I don’t still he’s reached superstardom just yet but a Finals berth at this level of production may do it.
I’d be more happy for him if every article about his success (and the Nuggets) didn’t turn into no holds bar AI bash fest. This one surprisingly didn’t mention AI, but without looking, I’m sure it’s mentioned in the comments sections at least 1 or 15 times.

    I still don’t think*

tealish..I think most comments are about how much better chauncey is than Iverson…which at the end of the day is probably accurate.

  • clapzilla

Ironically, Garnett’s First Series Win Came Against The Nuggets Who Were Led By A Rookie Melo. Being That I’m From Denver, I Worship Chauncey. But He’s Received A Bit Too Much Credit. The Meltdown In Last Season’s Playoffs Woke Karl Up. During The Summer He Talked Nene Into Finally Committing To The Team, Talked Kenyon Into Becoming A Vocal Leader, And Decided To Reward JR’s Progress By Giving Him A Longer Leash. Then In Training Camp It Was Defense Only! The Pieces Were Already There, Chauncey Just Crystallized Things.
