Women’s hoops, handball and more

What’s Alan Paul been up to in China? Well…a lot.

by Alan Paul

I am posting this from the press stands of the China/France handball game and I’ll tell you what; handball rocks. I don’t know why this hasn’t become more popular in the U.S. It is the demon spawn of soccer, hoops and dodgeball. What’s not to like? The first time I saw it was when my 10-year-old son Jacob made his school team and played in some tournaments last winter. I walked in and was blown away by the excitement – and this was 10-12 year old kids. I am going to spread the gospel of handball when I move back. China is getting crushed 29-15, but any event involving them is fun here.

Here are a few links to posts discussed in my last post here.

This is the story about the woman weightlifter.
This is the wacky tale about how the photo-op with President W came to be.
This is the story about Chinese diver Guo Jingjing.

Now, to my real point: I went to the U.S./China women’s game last night, a day after that epic game between the men. The U.S. women looked tremendous, winning by over 40. China is not bad – they beat Spain in round one and different, obviously weaker U.S. team in an exhibition game here in April.

I really enjoyed speaking with the woman afterwards, too. Really cool group. I will try to get there as often as possible for their games. Tonight: China v. Spain

You better believe that handball rocks. Too bad it’s not so popular in the US. I would love to see someone like Dwyane Wade try it.

Rubio is sick. 6 deflections in the last minutes of the reg and OT of the game 2 steals and a gutsy alley-oop to Gasol with 1:30 in OT. The Chinese were unlucky, Yao got hammered in OT and had no calls until HE fouled out.

Hursty, I was at that game tonight and I agree with everything you said about it. An account of it should come up soon.

DWade on Handball is a great call. I’m not even sure how good France is but they looked great. I guess Denmark is the best and they played next but I had to hustle over to basketball to see Spain/China. China shoulda couldaa

Chris Kaman & the rest of the German team were also watching a handball game a few days ago and Kaman, who didn´t know the sport before, totally loved it.
So maybe there is a market for it in the USA…

Semione Augustus is so nice. So very, very nice. I could watch her play anyday. She was embarassing those other women. Her game is so ill. I remember when she was in college down here and that was the only time I watched LSU games.

Alan, you’re so right about handball. Such a sick sport! My new dream is to be an Olympic handball player for London 2012.
