Marion Jones Joins the WNBA

You know her as a sprinter, but Jones can play ball. She started for North Carolina when the team won the national championship in 1994. From the Tulsa World: “Jones, who was stripped of five medals from the 2000 Sydney Olympics after she admitted to using steroids, will play in the WNBA as a rookie free agent. ‘We’re thrilled to have her,’ Shock head coach Nolan Richardson said. ‘In the workouts last week I saw how hard she works. She has things you can’t teach, like speed and great hand and eye coordination. She looks chiseled. Her age (34) might be saying one thing but everything about her is saying she’s young.’”

So, umm, lets just keep her far away from Rashard.

    WTF?

  • Hussman25

This should be interesting…. great comeback story if everything works out!

Can’t wait to see her play. I can only imagine how deadly she will be on fastbreaks and chasing down the her opponent for the block. Something tells me she will have many blocks in her future. There is a small number of very quick players in the WNBA, so she will be a treat.

the wnba: where banned athletes from other sports coming to your league and making the roster despite not having played in over a decade happens

  • tavoris

about damn time. @slammin-Jones was an all-american at UNC. Should have did this a decade ago (instead of the track, steriods, and check kiting debacle)

  • underdog

Hey, it’s never too late to be a rookie.

I’m looking forward to seeing her play (and interview). Takes a heck of an athlete to be out of a sport for 10 years and then come back and perform at a professional level. I’m pulling for her to put her past behind and make the best of this opportunity.

Whats taking the WNBA so long to fold?

  • Stillballin

Is she the oldest rookie ever??

  • JD

A Sprinter with 5 golds?! She should be banned from all sports after what she did

This is like Usain Bolt suddenly joining the NBA…. or NFL…

  • BeatNasty

She looks chiseled at 34 because SHE USES STEROIDS!

  • Dfrance

Actually NiQ, she did start on a Div.1 basketball team, so it’s really not the same.

  • pilight

It’ll be a story again when she gets cut.

  • str8 from samoa

haha will see what happens later…

  • Micahel Scorn

This is just a WNBA publicity stunt.

it’s like if charlie ward had went to the cfl after the nba was through with him.

  • Justin

dma, Kobe didn’t do anything against the rules of his sport. Totally different situation but it will be interesting to see her take a shot at this. I was chuckling a little bit at the “She looks chiseled” line though

  • nastierthanu

@lionel lol. She’s a beast and always was all thru highschool topping the nation charts as a freshman. I watched her career since her first year in highschool and hope she finds sucess in the wnba. @ JD so its ok to be involved in homocides and still play but u can’t use steroids and make a comeback. She served time had had her medals taken away. She’s paid her dues fresh start
