SLAM 158: On Sale Now!

The Playoffs are here. Read our new ish to get prepared!

by Ben Osborne | @bosborne17

Some of you folks with short memories may have totally forgotten the lockout, but to this old head, it seems like just yesterday we had writers staking out midtown hotels and trying to translate the meaning of phrases like “how u” and “enormous consequences.” Thankfully, though, we moved on to phrases like “back-to-back-to-backs” (Kidding! The season has actually been pretty entertaining).

But now the real fun begins! Besides having Lang—who did the honors in our Preview issue as well—take a minor stab at predicting how this whole thing will turn out, we use this special Playoff issue to dig a little deeper around the various post-season storylines and examine the questions we’re most curious about, which include…

Can defending champ Tyson Chandler do for the Knicks what he did for the Mavs? How much can Kobe possibly have left? Is Lob City still the most exciting metropolis in the NBA? Why is Tony Parker having a career season now? Can Joakim Noah be the starting center on an NBA Championship team? Especially if the Bulls struggle with Roy Hibbert and the rival Pacers? And perhaps most relevantly, what—if anything—is different about the Heat this year than last?

We dispatched our great writers around the country to analyze all this stuff and much more—including a great piece on James Harden and the Thunder by SLAM rookie Royce Young of DailyThunder.com—as well as posters and a Slamadamonth that stick to the theme, all so we could best prepare you for the wild ride of the NBA postseason.

The NBA Playoffs aren’t the only thing in the issue, by the way. Continuing our efforts to provide stories about less-heralded people who are part of the game we love, be sure to read up on former schoolboy legend Jonathan Hargett and defensive stopper-turned-long-time-coach Jerry Sloan. Both pieces have twists that will likely be unfamiliar to most, if not all, of our readers.

And as for our second straight year of making four dope collectible covers (shown in gallery below and available at newsstands on a regional basis—Heat in East, DRose in Midwest, KD in Southwest, Kobe on the West Coast), what can we say? Our Creative Director’s got the juice. Cop ‘em all!

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Geez, “Is this the year the Bulls beat the Heat” makes it sound like the Heat thump the Bulls in the postseason annually, when really last year was only the second time the Heat ever beat the Bulls in a playoff series, first was in 2006.
I’m guessing subscribers will once again get the Heat cover?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Gimme dat Final Episode cover! These are ill!

  • mike

To much. Different side pictures and players along the top.Tyson on one cover and melo on another? Cmon man. If you guys need the extra money that bad just come out with two different cover looks and i’ll write a check for the rest of the sales. Keep it simple.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

    @Tzvi: Yessir!
@everyone who asked: Subscribers get the Heat.
@mike: You’ll write a check for simple covers? Let’s talk.

  • arthur

Dear SLAM. You are awesome. Regards, Karan.

  • shutup

The covers remind me of teen bop covers or the like. I prefer them to throwback covers though. I’m in for my $4.99.

  • BostonBaller

I’m down with the covers but after re-up’n a few days ago I now have to BUY 3 more mags to keep the streak alive. Down since ish #1 baby!!!!

  • richard

will all 4 covers be sold in singapore?

  • YaBoy

I haven’t even received that K-Love/Rubio April issue yet! WTF Slam?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Peter Walsh

@Zabbah check picture 3 of 5, we got Tony Parker on there!

  • Heals

^^^Hate to be “that guy,” but c’mon TP should’ve been on all 4 covers. On the spectrum on being true to the game and pushing mags, ya’ll are certainly closer to being true to the game, BUT give the effin Spurs more love than that. NYK is 8th in the weak East, no need for Melo we all know it. Slick concept and nice execution I just had to nit-pick that aspect of it…

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

It’s funny that you say on the cover “Don’t sleep on the Spurs”, yet you didn’t give TP a large photo cover just like anybody else.

  • http://www.slamonline.com aman from arkansas

What about a B. Jennings/Monta Ellis cover that better.

  • Daniel

    Hey SLAM!
I live in the Turks and Caicos Islands and am probably the only subscriber down here. I have not been receiving any of the magazines of the last couple months. What the heck is the problem???

  • Jerome

SLAM … I am waiting for the TMZish show based on your office. Shock the world.

  • TR

PLEASE SEND ME THE COVER WITH KEVIN DURANT ON THE FRONT.

  • Najee the ripper

  • http://www.pisforprops.com jarrett

  • BRYANT BYNUM GASOL 24 17 16

What the hell slam the article says the west coast gets Kobe but I go to the store and see the heat! WTF WTF WTF

  • Techie

Now that the Knicks secured the 7th seed. Is there any reason that they will move up to the a POSSIBLE 6th seed and AVOID playing Chi-town & MIAMI first round.. Indiana has a young team, but they don’t have what it takes to possibly beat the Knicks. If Indy plays orlando, its a cake walk for them 1st round.

The art work on these covers… DOPE.. Great job BEN & SLAM STAFF!
Gotta get the East coast cover and read the Knicks/HEAT.

    - Tech.

  • Heals

SLAM, hey SLAM! Ya’ll cropped out Tyson on my cover. What’s the dilly-O? Fake outrage aside nice ish…

  • TonyStarks

I love SLAM but I was never a fan of these different cover issues. The first couple of issues that did this with two different players were OK but this is getting ridiculous. Getting a SLAM cover used to be a huge honor and was only reserved for select players, but these issues are really taking away from the “aura” that surrounded that. I’m sure not everyone agrees .. but just my two cents on the topic.

  • Jim Teegs

Been talk about the big 4 teams who’ll make noise come post season, Heat OKC bulls and spurs so come time to pick 4 covers for playoff edish you boys decide to go through the archives to see if there’s a photo of Kobe you haven’t slapped on a cover yet. He dont need to be there, not impressed.

  • Young

It says the midwest gets the dross cover. I GOT THE FREAKING HEAT!!! SLAMMM whatchaa guys doing the heat are our rivals why do u give chicago the heat issue?!?!?!

  • Duck Johnson

Surprised none of the Kardashians made that cover

  • http://twitter.com/#!/MichaelJR_NZ Michael NZ

I buy SLAM each month regardless of the cover. So there you go. In fact, I don’t really care too much who or what team is on it. Leave that to the kids to fight about.
