SLAM 167: On Sale Now!

Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins are ready to take over the game.

by Ben Osborne / cover shot by Trevor Paulhus

Every issue drop is exciting to me, but ones where we’re actually covering new ground are extra special. And I’d say the first big magazine cover for Andrew Wiggins and the first photo shoot and real time together for Wiggins and Jabari Parker qualify as a lot of new ground.

If you follow hoops and have an internet connection then you should know who these kids are. Parker is the Chicago native with the NBA bloodlines and mature-beyond-his-years game and disposition. He’s been in the hoop spotlight since he was about 14 years old and handled every challenge gracefully. Wiggins is the Canadian native with NBA bloodlines and more late-arriving cred, since he spent time in the Class of 2014 and has attended a few different high schools.

Besides the NBA genes, what these two have in common is high-level skills and a growing level of hype that have them both being seen as heirs to LeBron James. Neither is likely to do what LeBron has done as a pro (honestly, there will probably never be another LeBron), but they fit the bill as far as height, versatility and watchability as high school athletes.

Our own up-and-coming star, Assistant Editor Franklyn Calle, has a nice piece about the background to this shoot that you should read. After that, just look for this awesome issue—which also includes March Madness predictions, stories on collegiate standouts such as Michael Carter-Williams and Mason Plumlee, some sick All-Star Weekend photos and typically timely features on NBA studs like Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard—on newsstands in NYC starting today and nationally (shoot, internationally) next week.

The Shock Exchange has a feeling this is going to be another one of those iconic covers from SLAM.

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

Yes, Andrew Wiggins finally on the cover! Can’t wait to see him play. On another note, reminds me of the Lebron/Telfair cover. Here’s hoping that both will be succeed in the L.

  • RKJ92

LOL this reminds me of the Sebastian Telfair, LeBron James cover for some reason

  • RKJ92

I actually said that without reading @niQ1:disqus comment.. creepy..

  • Max

I was just thinking about that cover yesterday lol.

  • spit hot fiyah

wiigins looks more like a video game character than a real human in that pic

  • Redd

    Awesome cover.

  • shockexchange

That Telfair/James cover was when SLAM’s coverage of high school basketball was at its zenith. The Shock Exchange couldn’t wait grab the next issue to read about the next high school phenom – Love, Singler, Rose, Mayo, Beasley – SLAM’s HS coverage had no peer.

If Wiggins turns out to be as good as he’s projected, Canada will be a serious challenge to the US in the next 10 years with guys like Kabongo, C. Joseph, T. Thompson, Olynyk, Bennett, Nicholson and multiple others

  • RKJ92

The RKJ92 agree’s with you, The RKJ92 feels that because of the high school coverage and in depth 1 on 1′s with diff players that Slam magazine was and is unrivaled

  • Franklyn Calle

You should pick up the actual copy and read the prediction he gives about where he envisions the Canadian national team will be in 10 years! Canadians are going to love reading that part. Haven’t commented on here in a minute, but I am super excited about this cover. I told someone on a Sports Radio show that I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about Wiggins in the mainstream sports media. He looks like the best high school senior since Kevin Durant.

  • GoDuke11

As a Duke fan, I hope Wiggins goes to Carolina. That would be an amazing game to watch next year!

  • bike

I get this vibe from that cover shot that these guys don’t like each other very much.

    lol thats cold

I hope so…what if they come out and run the league as bitter rivals for the next 15 years

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

If these two live up to the hype and reach their prime in 4-5 years, it’s crazy to think that KD will still be in his. LeBron will be out but could very well still be the best. Who knows where Russ and Rose will be, but we know where Kyrie will be.

    don’t forget Steve Nash

  • Madubbs

This is one of the best covers ive seen in a while, def gonna cop it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yea pretty much all one and done guys. –> http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-mock-draft/2014/

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i wouldn’t go that far. i doubt any of those three will be better than Jordan/Bryant/James. i doubt it so much i will punch myself in the throat if i am wrong.

    B Long!

    Alright Miss Cleo.

  • Redd

You posted that all the way at the top just so people could read it…lol sad.

  • Redd

Lol..a serious challenge? Very doubtful…lol wtf.

  • Redd

Indeed, hope Wiggins somehow gets on the Raps, that’d be big for Toronto.

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

    One can only dream.

  • Name

At the moment, considering the ceiling he has, Wiggins could be a legit 20-25 ppg scorer in the NBA. In 7-8 years when he’ll be 25 entering his prime and Lebron/KD will be leaving their primes, he’ll have the potential to be the best SF in the L. Wiggins, along with C. Joseph (who has largely improved with the Spurs coaching staff, his perimeter D is already looking above avg), Myck Kabongo (Great potential), Anthony Bennett (Great Potential), T. Thompson (Will be a seasoned NBA vet by then), Kelly Olynyk (Good potential) and Andrew Nicholson (good potential), that is an above average nucleus that could be having big games against the US in the 2020 olympics.

  • Redd

USA will always get great players, KD will be 27 & at his Prime,

Wiggins will be good but you got Jabari coming too along with a lot of other great players. Kyrie will be there as well along with Rose.

  • The Philosopher

    Lil’ duns doing their thing…

  • Name

Yeah that is definitely true, but I’m just saying, if Team Canada can hire a competent coaching staff and build some chemistry like the Argentina golden generation and last decade’s Spain did, they could be in a few years to the US what Spain has been these past couple of Olympics. Of course, all this assuming Wiggins becomes a top tier SF and counting on the development of the big men like Bennett, Thompson and Olynyk.

  • shutup

The difference is Argentina and Spain relied on a heavy post presence; something Canada will never have; despite the potential of the players you named.

  • CP3 4 MVP

I think Julius Randle is right up there with them too, he looks like he is more physically ready for the NBA right now

  • Jerome

Parker is the +1 on the cover.

  • Jerome

Parker looks like he’s gonna cry.

  • Mars

So is this a hint that we will have dual-diary? That would be super dope. OR…College freshmen diary, since we’ve been duped on the last one. Muhammed was ok i guess. Wait….idea for Slam writers again. Just thank me later. How about a US rep and a Canada for high school hoops? Preferably from top teams who would most likely face each other during the regular season. You guys are due for a job offer. To me. Times are hard.

  • trueballer4life

    wiggins is the Canadian lebron..!

  • DoPeJFr3sH

When Wiggins gets drafted number one overall Canadian basketball will offically be respected worldwide. Wiggins “Rep Tdot cause the city made a Beast”

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ben Osborne

We did a college diary once when Mike Dunleavy Jr was at Duke…then the NCAA said we weren’t allowed to do it. Haters. Maybe these guys can keep the Rookie Diary when they get to the League.
