Fireball 2!

By Sammy Newman-Beck

For the second year in a row the Pre Summer League Summer League known as The Fireball Classic took place this past weekend. Organized and directed under the guidance of Ricky Rivers and sponsored by Shirts and Skins Athletic wear, the league annually brings out the best players in and out of the NBA. While last year’s tournament featured NBA players like Nate Robinson and Renaldo Balkman this year’s playoffs starred a New Jersey Nets tandem of Marcus Williams and Sean Williams along with now L.A. Clipper Smush Parker.

What makes this tournament unique however is not the NBA stars that are usually on hand, but the competition they receive from streetball legends as well as former college players (and in this year’s case, a high school player). While last year, James “Speedy” Williams, Gordon Malone and Junie Saunders headlined, this year guys like former Providence Friar Garnett Thompson, former Kentucky giant Shagari Alleyne and even future UConn husky Kemba “EZ Pass” Walker made their presences felt.

While SLAM was only able to catch Friday night’s action, word has it that the Championship game on Sunday pit the “Gunhill” team against the “GCD” (also known as the NBA team with Smush, Marcus and Sean) and interestingly enough, to the crowds approval, Gunhill came out on top.
