Celtics Send Daniel Theis to Bulls in 3-Team Trade with Wizards

The Boston Celtics were busy on Thursday’s trade deadline with the roster taking on a slightly different look in the second half of the 2020-21 season.

One player who will no longer be on said roster is fourth-year center Daniel Theis, whom the Celtics sent to the Chicago Bulls in a three-team trade involving the Washington Wizards. Radio.com’s Ryan McDonough (a former league executive) would detail the trade as follows:

In sum, Boston would send off Theis, Javonte Green and $1.3 million in cash considerations while receiving centers Luke Kornet (via Chicago) and Moritz Wagner (via Washington). Both Green and Theis would be sent to the Bulls, along with wing Troy Brown Jr. (via Washington) and $250,000 (via Washington).

The Wizards would receive forwards Chandler Hutchinson and Daniel Gafford as well.

Theis is the most notable name on the list , having played a key role in the Celtics’ rotation for several years. A stretch-big who can also make plays above the rim, Theis is averaging a career-best 9.5 points per game this season (along with 5.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game).

The spotlight reached Brown in 2019-20, as he averaged 10.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per contest while starting 22 of 60 games. However, the arrivals of a ball-dominant All-Star in Russell Westbrook and a lottery pick in rookie Deni Avdija have significantly reduced Brown’s on-court opportunities, as he’s averaging just 13.7 points per game this season (he averaged 25.8 minutes per game last season).

Wagner is another player who particularly interesting, as he’s averaged 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game over the course of his career when playing at least 30 minutes.
