FIBA World Cup Qualifying Group Announced for U.S. Men’s Basketball Team

With the Olympics over, the focus of the international basketball world now shifts to the 2023 FIBA World Cup for the United States Men’s Basketball Team. I will be a chance for Team USA to redeem themselves from the 2019 FIBA World Cup, where the United States struggled, only managing a seventh-place finish.

The qualification process was announced by FIBA on Tuesday morning, with the United States taking on Puerto Rico, Mexico and Cuba in the first round of qualification:

Team USA will face each of the three teams in their group twice, with the winner of the group advancing to the second round of qualification.

The qualification process will have three separate windows of games taking place from Nov. 20-30, Feb. 21-Mar. 1, 2022 and June 27-July 5, 2022. The second round of qualifications will begin in Aug. 2022.

There are 80 countries worldwide competing in the first round of qualification, with only 32 spots in the World Cup available for grabs.

The 2023 FIBA World Cup will be hosted by Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines, running from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10.
