Steve Nash: ‘Kevin Durant Can Play All Five Positions’

Recently appointed Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash has no shortage of faith in his new team’s lead superstar to contribute across the board. The future Hall of Fame point guard recently shed light on his plans for Kevin Durant while featured as a guest on J.J. Redick’s podcast.

“Kevin, with his length, is a matchup problem for everyone.” Nash said on The Old Man and the Three. “Kevin can play all five positions, and I plan to use him in all five positions.”

While this isn’t shocking, it does make sense in the modern NBA. Durant has the ball handling skills of a point guard but is equally capable of playing small-ball center, standing at 6’11”.

Durant missed the entire 2019-20 season after rupturing his Achilles tendon during Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals. Prior to this, he was one of the best players in the entire NBA. Since his rookie year in the 2007-08 season, he has career averages of 27.0 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game while shooting an efficient .381 from deep.

With both Durant and Kyrie Irving set to return from injury next season, the Nets are projected to be one of the best teams in the league.

Given Nash’s comments, expect Durant to play a variety of positions for the team on both ends of the floor. The Brooklyn Nets finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 35-37, good for the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference.
