Who Makes The Dream Team?

Which All-Star will be the first to get cut? Plus all of today’s news and notes…

by Lang Whitaker

Let’s get to it. Also, the Sonics situation is getting its own post momentarily…

QUOTE OF THE DAY
“In some ways, people are a lot like animals. I’m mesmerized by tigers. Their eyes, their stripes, their constant quest for survival. They almost have a sense of mysteriousness about them. They pull you in and make it difficult to look away. They make you wonder what is behind their gaze. A sense of eerie awe comes over you in their presence. The fear they give you when you pass them is stunning. Behold the beauty of the tiger.” — Britney Spears.

THE LINKS…
• The US Men’s National Team started practice yesterday out in Vegas, and already everyone’s gushing over Coach K and his ego-free attitude (well, except for his own ego, of course). Mike Wise says the team is running hard and fast, hoping to flourish in transition. Dwyane Wade has gone from an afterthought his first time on Team USA to “a key guy.” And Coach K divided the team into two groups, one of big time scorers and one that seems more balanced.

Anyone know why LeBron is wearing number 29 in this picture in the Washington Post?

What I’m curious about is that there’s 24 guys there, but no more than 15 will go with the team to Asia in two weeks. So who’s going to be left behind? My completely uneducated guess:
Kobe (injured)
Lamar Odom (family issues)
JJ Redick (injured)
Amare Stoudemire (recovering from injury)
Chauncey Billups (family reasons)
Paul Pierce (about to have surgery)
Shane Battier
Adam Morrison
Luke Ridnour
The real decision will come down next week.

• As it turns out, LeBron’s Nike contract does have location bonuses. And as this article points out, wait a few years until Nike gives Bron a new deal with even larger bonuses. Funny, because I’m still hearing that this is wrong and that there are no location bonuses.
• The Rockets have signed Vassilis Spanoulis, who I’m pretty sure works here in our advertising office.

• Don’t count Michael Jordan out! The BETcats have signed Othella Harrington. If he’s not able to contribute immediately, he’ll fill in on “College Hill” from time to time.

• Nets rook Josh Boone got some surprise cut-up yesterday. What’s strange is how they aren’t putting any timetable on his return. (Note how he shot 28 percent from the free throw line in summer league action.)

• Catching up with the Portsmouth Summer League.

• The Spurs will get Jackie Butler. Love the first line here.

• He’s back! It’s the sausage king of Chicago, Jackson Vroman.

Marty Burns explains why the jersey numbers for Team USA at the bottom of this article. Lebron is 29 because his last name is James, but it will be interesting to see what he is in the World Champs.

Thanks… you do an incredible job.

  • J.Philly

I heard that they started the numbers at 20 and just went by alphabetical order.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

That actually makes sense, because I saw a picture of Brad Miller wearing number 33, and he’s four guys alphabetically from LeBron.

  • Thomas Jackson

Lang – I know it was hard to top Britney’s quote…. legendary stuff there. Still, you gotta love Jeff Van Gundy referring to his players as “diminutive” in the article about Spanoulis. Actually, the entire line is dope… “We have a bunch of diminutive guards on our team, so getting length and size is good.”

Yo Slam, let me tell you my starting five for the World Championships that the USA will dominate. Point: Chris Paul, Shooting G: Mr. Finals MVP, Small foward: LeBron James, Power foward: Elton Brand, and Center: Dwight Howard. We are going to kill all the comp, so for the next cover just put these five guys on there. Okay!

  • http://WWW.YAHOO.COM G-UNOT

HOW COULD WE HAVE THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD AND STILL LOOSE ALL THE TIME..

  • jason_homan

G-UNOT, it’s because we have stars but not chemistry in the past. That’s what they’re trying to fix the next few world competitions and in the Olympics!

  • G

^^ It’s because we don’t spend enough time on the fundamentals. Such as learning the difference between “loose” and “lose”.

  • Matt Wens

if ur referring to the olympics, they didnt attack the zone at all, alot of the time they stood back and popped 3′s… without good shooters you wont win. Hardly ever was the ball in the short corner or high post where they can take advantage of athleticism and cut to the rim and finish strong.

coach k will exploit the zone alot better being a college coach

  • Bernard

Hey Lang, about the Dream Team coming to Asia. I’m living in S.Korea right now and I remember reading that the team will be coming here for a small tournament before qualifiers. Do you have any information about when that tournament is?

  • http://yahoo.com DP

Yo G-unot, you got a problem with 50? If so, please let me know.

  • NZ Baller

    I have a problem with 50…..he’s shit.

  • http://yahoo.com DP

Oh 50 shit right? Yo listen NZ Baller, you might be right, but don’t tell me you with the Game and G-unot, cause Game is shit.

  • Mighty

I SWEAR TO MY SLAM ISH 1 THAT TEAM USA NEEDS LUKE RIDNOUR BADLY.

THE GUY IS A SUPERB PLAY MAKER……..Luke “FRODO BAGGINS” Ridnour
back when he had the jherri curl frow

  • Mighty

LISTEN UP YALL….underground hip hop is the best! Does anyone listen to People Under The Stairs? Double K and Thes One yall!

Thats why NBA 2k5 is the dopest soundtrack of all time! they got hiero, PUTS, J boog and other underground cats. J-live too i think….

My favorite MF DOOM song is “arrow root” from special herbs 1-2.
I think that song should be played while the players chill in the locker rooms….

  • paul wall

yo DP, aren’t you a bit old for this stuff? i mean it’s funny to read and all, but maybe you need to relax just a little. you think 50 cares? so why should you?

  • Vyse

People Under the Stairs sucks. I love rap, and not-so-humbly know more about it than anyone who posts here, but PUTS blows. The best song they ever did was “Acid Raindrops,” which is super dope. That and their hook-up with Ugly Duckling.

50 Cent sucks. Game sucks. kk

    DP, your lineup owns, though.

  • Ben

I think that says everything about 50…

Yeah yeah, get more money, more money
Yeah yeah yeah, get more money, more money
Yeah yeah yeah, get more money, more money
Yeah yeah yeah, get more money, more money
    Yeah

    (Piggy Bank)

  • http://yahoo.com DP

Hey Paul Wall, I don’t care what 50 thinks. I just think people should go on and leave the man alone. I’m not backing him up or nothing I’m just sayin, he alright as a rapper ain’t he? Whatever talking about 50 is getting old, everybody hates the man any way.

  • Mighty

go to a PUTS live show man!
