Class of Athletes, Led by Ed O’Bannon, File Suit Against NCAA

In a move that’s been a long time coming, a class action lawsuit was filed against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on behalf of a class consisting of thousands of former DI athletes who are alleging the NCAA violated and is continuing to violate federal law by not cutting them in on profit gained from the use of their likenesses. Representing the class is the 1995 MOP of the Final Four and one of UCLA’s finest players, Ed O’Bannon. According to reports: “The Complaint seeks injunctive relief that will enjoin the NCAA from its alleged anticompetitive practices and protect students in the future.” It’s worth mentioning that Sonny Vaccaro, mentor to a generation of amateur athletes, has been brought in as a consultant by the plaintiffs.

NOTE: Farmer Jones will have MUCH more info for you about this later…

Update: Farmer has spoken.

It is pretty bogus all the $$ made off of these guy’s backs. Not to mention all the video game $$ – there names might not be in the games but their likenesses sure as hell are.

FINALLY!!!! the NCAA are at long last going to have to put up with current and former students suing their backsides off – lets hope that the whole amateurism sham is eradicated and the world sees the NCAA for what they are – a multi billionaire industry who uses slave labour

Best case scenario is really getting a Union going or as strange as the acronym is, NCAA-PA (Player’s association, like NFL-PA MLB NBA etc.), or NCAA-Student Union maybe? College kids sure are smart enough to get the ball rolling and its a shame they have to do so, standing up to some million dollar lawyers that the schools will easily afford as well as the runaround of the NCAA organization on rules/changes/suspensions/bans/et al.

    No way?

Sam Keller, former Arizona State and Nebraska QB, recently brought a somewhat similar suit against the NCAA.

The NCAA could pay for players’ masters degrees, or put the money in trust funds…

ok… they don’t get paid… but slavery? one involves being a celebrity at a local institution, possible lifetime of opportunities for networking and education, housing, books, stipend… not to mention the fringe benefits… girls like you, and you can get some cheesy booster job where you don’t have to work… the other is slavery- where you will find none of these benefits…to say the least… I know lots of college students who work for almost nothing at billionaire owned businesses- they are called interns

What happened to this guy to get him out of the league if he was MOP in ’95( I’m British and i didn’t follow the NBA or Basketball back then)

  • rav

That was in poor taste – you realise Ed O’Bannon lost his brother (twin?) a few years back?
