Breaking: Kemba Walker Talks About Signing With Under Armour

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

Kemba Walker doesn’t know when he’ll get to make his NBA debut. He does know what he’ll be wearing on his feet when he does, though.

“Under Armour was just a perfect fit,” says Walker, the No. 9 overall pick in the June’s NBA Draft, who signed a multi-year deal with Under Armour earlier today. “They love what they do, and I love what I do.”

Fresh off of a phenomenal Junior year at UConn (23. 5 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 4.5 apg, First-Team All-American, Most Outstanding Player NCAA Tournament) that saw him lead the Huskies to 32 wins and a national title, the 6-1 Walker is hoping to help his new teams, the Charlotte Bobcats and Under Armour, attain similar success.

“I like starting from the ground up, and that’s just how Under Armour is,” says Walker. “Me, Brandon [Jennings], Cam [Newton], Julio Jones and the rest of the guys we’re gonna try our best to build it up.”

For his part, Kris Stone, Director of Sports Marketing for Professional Basketball at Under Armour, says the brand’s been focusing on Walker for a long while.

“In my eyes and in the eyes of this company, since I’ve been here, around three years, he’s been somebody we’ve always looked at and thought, Hey, we can do some really creative and great things around Kemba.”

Walker joins Brandon Jennings and Greivis Vasquez, two fiery and flashy guards, as the face of Under Armour Basketball.

“[Being one of the faces] is the reason why I chose Under Armour,” says Walker. “If I would’ve went anywhere else, I definitely would’ve gotten lost.”

Stay tuned to SLAMonline.com to hear more from Walker and UA about their new partnership.

I’m sorry but I can’t imagine anyone copping the (insert year) Kemba Walker “stepback” Under Armour Sneakers…..Although considering I am a marketing genius, stepback might be a dope name for his sig shoe line…

  • Jer dawg

Some of those shoes look kinda nice. I’d try UA out.

almost that was was Kalin Lucas in the pic…but anyways yeah, I mean he wore Jordans the entire season, 12′s throughout most of the regular and them mashup joints during his epic Big East tourney and the Nationals…I figured that was even one of the reason the Bobcats took him…almost kinda dissapointed for some reason lol anyways should be a good signing for UA…even though its gonna take 3 years before his shoe comes out lol

Eh, Jordan probably could do without. I’m sure he’d like him to be signed to JB, but I think this is a great move for Kemba. He probably is making more money anyway, and will look more distinguished on the court.

Kemba’s always been a Jordan/Nike head. Rockin Nike retro’s on the regular from day 1 at Uconn. Being down with the Nike team HAD to be what he wanted most.
They might be half decent performance wise, but ain’t nobody walkin’ down Fordhan Rd rockin’ them joints.
And, I know Kemba knows that Under Armour got no street cred, but if I were to mention this to him I have a feeling he’d probably point out that they feel very comfortable while making the trip to the bank to deposit that Under Armour check.

I wish they would have picked up Brandon Knight but Kemba is cool too.
